Sony made $700 million in 2023 in first party game sales. Microsoft makes about $2billion in profit from game pass, this not including sales from PC and now ps5. Game Pass is more beneficial as it operates at a much higher margin. especially if your assumption is "people arent buying games on xbox and xbox doesnt care if people buy the console". Furthermore, take a step back. Look at the industry, especially indie devs. To just shit on big corporation, more specifically Microsoft is easy and isnt totally without warrent. But ot does feel like it ignore a more industry wide issue at the moment.

Hey jimmymac2292! First off - truly, thank you for checking out and listening to the show. Mega appreciate it. Some things to clarify from your comment: It is not known how many Gamepass subscribers there are, which also means it's not fully possible to assign a numerical profit line to the service. Microsoft claims there are 34 million subscribers, but make no attempt to clarify what that means. Are Gamepass Core subscribers part of that count (the previous Live Gold)? Secondly, it's impossible to derive the value of any profit made by Gamepass, because of the day and date release cycle of first party games. Meaning, Gamepass could be turning in dollars, but it's obvious that it's not offsetting the cost of the games being produced in first party studios. And those two things aren't ever addressed concurrently by Spencer. This is a great read, and was partially the basis for my opinions in the episode: www.forbes.com/sites/erikkain/2024/05/14/xbox-game-pass-needs-to-change-and-call-of-duty-can-help-pave-the-way/?sh=798d2a921021 Would be happy to address a question in next week's episode! Let me know what you want me to talk about, and I'll try and incorporate it into the show. Thanks again. :) -Mike

@powergamerpodcast4675 "If you take the core price and the ultimate price you have an average package price of about 13.50 per month, which works out to about 405 million dollars of revenue a month." It's fair to say while this is an estimated, it's likely this number is in the ballpark of what Xbox makes. Factor in a game like Starfield, which was both commercially successful and day one on game pass. Day and date is beneficial. With projections of $1 billion in revenue "Even if only half of the 10 million players purchased the base $70 version of the game, that’s still $350,000,000. With post-launch support and accounting for the deluxe editions of the game,it could be safe to assume the company will have no problem hitting the projects" Microsofts issue with Game Pass in terms of cost cutting measures is it's third-party deals. They can spend upwards of $300 million for one title. I think a key to their strategy would be a continuing of investment in indie developers, Palworld was a huge success for Microsoft and going their own way in terms of hardware. Phil Spencer has admitted to losing the console war. Nintendo checked out after the failures of both the Wii in terms of software and the wii u. They stuck to their strengths and made a hybrid centered around a handheld. Microsoft should lean more into the PC market and look to make a hybrid console of their own. Phil Spencer maybe exploring this option as he has mentioned getting other stores on the Xbox, most notably steam. Which a partnership could be very lucrative for both parties. This is all speculation, but I dont feel it's to far from reality given the state of consoles. insider-gaming.com/bethesda-expected-to-make-almost-1-billion-on-starfield/ www.vdgms.com/news/is-game-pass-profitable

I think the majority of the negative scores for Starfield are coming from improperly set expectations. I think most were assuming it was a game coming after the No Man's Skies and Star Citizens and Elite Dangerous'. But, it's not, and it's no where near any of them, aside from the fact that it's in space. Glad you guys are going in with open minds and disregarding the negative unless you come up with them on your own.
@powergamerpodcast4675
@powergamerpodcast4675 Год назад
Indeed. Review Scores are kinda bunk anyways, even though they're something we participate in. IGN & Gamespot's takes are over weighted and definitely not representative of how most people are receiving this game. This is a perfect example of Metacritic (which uses a weighted system, not an average - giving those two reviews much more weight than others) being a complete failure.

WOW this is a TERRIBLE TAKE.. Bro PS doesnt have ANYTHING coming in the next 2 years wtf 😂😂😂 Theyve LITERALLY released ZERO GAMES THIS YEAR.. And whats coming is the THIRD SPIDERMAN IN FIVE YEARS.. The best game on the console is possibly HFW and its UTTER TRASH.. Pure remakes and continuations.. NOBODY on Xbox is waiting, we got MORE than Redfall, weve got Hifi Rush, Age of Empires, Minecraft Legends, and Starfield and Forza MS coming.. You guys dont have any good takes tbh.. Its REALLY just hating hard and using emotions over logic.. No offense you have a small channel for a reason and its cause the takes are TERRIBLE.. Even your hate of the IPs its CLEAR your just saying stuff irrationally like they stifled Fable?? Bro the last game was 2017.. PS hasnt made a new Sly, Legend of Dragoon, Uncharted, Infamous, Killzone, its a IP graveyard..

I think you've got some fair points here, some I didn't address. You're definitely right that Sony doesn't have much in the pipeline right now. There's Spiderman 2, an upcoming Wolverine game (by that same studio), then a bunch of unannounced games. Microsoft certainly has some good games in the pipeline, two of my most anticipated with Starfield, and the upcoming Hellblade 2. The point I make in our podcast is that there are not enough 1st party games being released by Microsoft for me to justify paying $15/mo. It'd make more sense for me to just buy them as they come out. Me personally, I'd spend less money - and I'd have permanent ownership of the titles.

@@powergamerpodcast4675 I'm confused how PS plus is charging 20 a month no day ones and games that LITERALLY have already been in game pass minus older PS titles and call it a better deal?? I'm REALLY baffled as you didn't say how it was better, but only kinda said "Well PS plus does stuff that Gamepass does so why not just get a PS5?".. The main qualm I have is the lack of fact on this angle.. It was ALOT of speculating on OTHERS thoughts based on your own.. Like MAJORITY of those Xbox 1st party games are HIGHLY anticipated, and the older guy (apologies didn't exactly catch either's name) saying it's just "Games nobody cares about and reboots" but then says "They stifle thier IPS" mere sentences later.. Is baffling.. Tbh I've ALWAYS mained PS and only ever played 360 for Halo, Fable and like Kotor and Jade Empire.. However this gen (my first as a parent) I personally seen the S as a way for my 3 year old to play Minecraft (he loves it) cheaply, and not have to share my PS with him.. In 2022 I was SOOOOO bored with PS, for me GT7 was boring, HFW was LITERALLY PRETTY boring, and GOWR, omg the amount of hand holding is baffling.. I was SO bored, I seen a exclusive game called Nakara Bladepoint on gamepass and MAN.. I was pretty impressed.. Next thing I know I'm going through the back catalog of Xbox 1st party and I'm hooked.. I personally can't champion PS after playing Xbox thoroughly honestly.. I been playing Sony 1st party's so much for the last decade once I played a Xbox game I sometimes found myself tapping a button in tense moments EXPECTING a QTE event.. Gamepass made me realize we criticize Xbox alot but they are FAR more creative than PS studios and the games have actual gameplay when it's tense and not tap X dressing.. PS gaming was making me dislike gaming, it's been such a.. Copy and paste fest for 70$... Day 5 of Gamepass I only honestly realized I only stayed on PS cause my friends and it was "hip".. I literally haven't touched it after putting like 12 hrs in GOWR and honestly don't plan to again.. And it's cause of Gamepass..
@powergamerpodcast4675
@powergamerpodcast4675 Год назад
I can certainly see your point here. And it is true that most of the highly rated Playstation Studios exclusives are third person, story driven, single player adventure titles. Days Gone from Bend, Ghost of Tsushima from Suckerpunch, Uncharted/Last of Us from Naughty Dog, Spiderman from Insomniac, God of War from Santa Monica, and Horizon from Guerilla do all have undeniable similarities, but also a quality and sheen that can't be denied. Granted, if you're not into that style of game - well... sure, Playstation's ecosystem is going to serve little purpose. Sounds like that's where you're coming from. For facts, I can clarify. Xbox's Gamepass is $15/mo so $180 a year, and presently doesn't have any Microsoft sponsored annual subscription for a discount. Playstation Plus Premium by comparison is just $119.00 a year - or if you're not interested in the older "classic" games, you can simply pay $100 a year for the exceptional value of Playstation Plus Extra. Both services provide a library of games in the 400 title range. What you think personally of the games offered on each service would be opinion - and it's my opinion that the library offered by Sony is comparable to that of the one offered by Xbox in terms of quality. So just in terms of value, Playstation's offering is the better deal. If you're more inclined to Xbox's offerings though, this may be a non factor - and I'm thinking that's where you are on this. There's much more value to you on Xbox's side of things as you certainly seem to prefer their offerings, and I get that. I do hope you understand that where as you are certainly entitled to your opinion, that you are in a strong minority regarding the free to play, NetEase owned Nakara Bloodpoint in a higher regard that games like God of War: Ragnarok, or Horizon Forbidden West - which you have every right to think that way - however, hopefully are cognizant that is a pretty hot take. :) I respect it though, as everyone is entitled to like what they like. I super appreciate your engagement here though, and hope you continue to listen to the show and help us grow. -Mike

It's to each their own. In the episode, we did concede that if someone didn't have a great game library, that they would find value in the service as you've stated. My over arching point is that on the promise of the service's value being centered around great first party Day 1 releases, they have not delivered. When this year is all said and done, we will have had Hi-Fi Rush, Redfall, Starfield, and Forza Motorsport (the only games meeting that criteria). If that promise is what drew a player to the service, simple math will deduce they'd have been better off just buying the games individually. They're simply not delivering enough to make it worthwhile, especially when for a lower rate across the aisle at Sony, you get even more for less.

@@barrymurray4923 In the episode, we actually do discuss the games that are in development/en route to Gamepass, taken straight from Microsoft's site. It's less than 10 games - so not sure where "80" is coming from... Also the net cost of owning those games is currently just $215, vs the recurring annual cost of Gamepass which is $180. Consider that if you're just going to play the title while not maintaining the annual subscription, you could simply buy the games physically and then sell them for an even greater savings - if we're just speaking in terms of value proposition.

Not gonna lie I would prefer rather than wasting money on day one aa and indies that are meh why not go after indies aa that been out for a while and have been proven certified quality aa and indies like I’m sure for the money spend to bring a title like life is p that looks good but you don’t know yet you could probably get a handful of indies and aa that where rated high and loved by the fans that’s what I hope for and just keep the day ones for the first parties studios
@powergamerpodcast4675
@powergamerpodcast4675 Год назад
I think this is a pretty spot on take. The reasoning for those aa's and indies is that they're all that's really affordable to put on a service like this. Which would be GREAT - if, like you said, we were getting those day one titles from first party studios. For the amount of teams Xbox has, it's been quite a startling drought over the past year for how few first party games we've actually seen release. Hi-Fi Rush (which was in development pre acquisition, surely), and Redfall (which was also in development pre acquisition...). Microsoft has a long history of mismanaging their first party studios though, so it's maybe not so surprising. Good comment!
@EZshocks
@EZshocks Год назад
PS+ usually gets their titles years after they were in Gamepass, so those game are even older. Gamepass gets fresher content for none day ones, then also day one titles like Hi-Fi Rush, Wo Long, Starfield, Forza Motorsport.
@powergamerpodcast4675
@powergamerpodcast4675 Год назад
Fair point - and I did indeed quite enjoy Hi-Fi Rush, which I beat. However, I've been fairly unimpressed lately with the games that have been coming to GamePass on both PC and Xbox. In terms of the games that I would actually play, I think you've mentioned most of them with exception to Redfall (yes... which I am one of the sad 2% that actually completed that game lol), but in terms of value - I would save more money just purchasing those few games instead of paying the $15 monthly fee. The problem isn't the model of Game Pass, rather it's that Xbox's first and second party studios haven't been delivering very much in terms of exclusive day one content. The promise is there, but the content is not sadly.
