I liked it starting maybe around the halfway point. I think that's me and not the photographer, though. I prefer more urban stuff. VERY appreciative of all the books you share. Keep going!
So I started collecting photo books myself and kept hearing about this. But, after seeing this book flip - great job btw! - I don't see what the fuss is all about tbh. Can someone tell me why this book is so sought after?
how many times have i watched these wonderful videos full of gratitude to The Photo Book Guy and love for the Artist! thank you so much for these videos!!
Wow. This is kind of..meditative. Looking at the other comments, I suspect this book won't quite be a bestseller. But it really does capture something, this obsessive documentation. I won't be asking my library for this one, but I liked seeing it. :)
As you turned the pages the cumulative feeling tone generated by these images became almost unbearable. Although in colour the photographs depict an environment devoid of any colour or life. I realise the prison is now closed but I longed to see some sign of humanity and human life, though I wouldn't wish incarceration there on anyone. When we eventually reach the interior and see inside the cells with their little patterned curtains, the feeling of alienation and sadness intensified. I'm glad this place is gone and I'm glad Wylie has documented it so unflinchingly. Thank you for sharing this Robin.
Kind of a surprise. I thought it would be a bunch of political portraits or maybe protest shots. There's so much artistic expression here. I like that about these.
I really like this book, he took so many pictures everyone is going to have a different favourite era. I really like the Pittsburg book (book 4 I think)
I visited St Kilda in 2019. It was a fascinating place to visit. It felt like stepping into another world. This place being so remote. It's hard to believe people actually lived on there. How many photography books would you say you own in your collection? Do you have a favourite amongst them? Where would you say your passion for these developed?
Nice one! The intro reminds me of Helge Skodvin's ”240 Landscapes”, an amazingly funny and beautiful book. You should check it out! Published on Journal.
@@photobookguy1380 Yes, it has a great Parr-quality all over it. Funny and fascinating. Helge Skodvin once told me about his working methods to carry out this project, which are also very interesting. He used all sort of tricks to systematically locate Volvo 240s in Norway: Scanning craiglist car-sites, matching license plates with different registers, visiting large parking lots, spontaneously following cars he met in traffic etc
I've been waiting for you ALL DAY! I thought I was going to have to send someone over there to knock on your door, maybe even bring soup or something! I've had my library website open ALL DAY wondering what to plug into it! Phew!
Thank you for this! Have you ever considered recording and uploading in 4k? It would really make a big difference. Keep up the good work. Incredible images in this book, wish I could make out the text parts
I have tried to make the videos as high quality as possible, but anything over a couple of minutes ends up with enormous file sizes. I think this upload was about 1GB, but at the higher res was about 8GB and it just takes too much time to process and fills memory capacity very quickly. If anyone can recommend a better way I'd happily do that. Cheers
@@photobookguy1380okay thanks for your reply! I'm not really a video guy so can't give any valuable pointers. Depending on camera there are ways to film and greatly reduce file size, for instance by using the h265-codec. Another suggestion is to perhaps think about how you light and white balance the recording, nailing this will improve percieved quality without increasing file sizes... Just trying to be helpful! Keep it up!
I want to thank you for providing an opportunity to see books containing the work of photographers whose books have become urban myths or priced out of reach. I love photograpy books but some books I will never have the needed funds when a copy appears for sale. These videos give me a chance to see a book I otherwise would not be able to see. Thanks again!
Thanks for your kind message. This is why I like doing the channel, even though it is quite a lot of work for not much return. I have had messages from around the world where they have zero chance of buying any of these books so it makes me happy to let people see these great books. Where in the world are you? I do sell photo books as well so I might be able to help out for you.
I see this book as an outsider to this culture. It has an otherness for me, how do US based guys like yourself see a book like this? Does it depend on whether you are East / West coast or middle America do you think? There is just such a vastness in geography and outlook in such a land mass that must make it difficult to be One Nation. I'm from a country that is tiny in comparison, yet we have divisions that are huge.
@@photobookguy1380 that’s a really great question. The different regions of the United States are very distinct. The south is very different than the northeast, for instance, where I’m from. Politically, culturally, around matters of race and many other details. There’s a lot to understand that unpack. I imagine it’s even harder with, less context from another country
John & Yoko were minding their own business, raising their son, John getting back to what he loved doing most - making music - and then some crazy ass son of a bitch had to ruin it for all of us. After almost 44 years, it still hurts.
Wow! This was really exciting to look at. I've got my eye on that "collected" version with a whole bunch of them in it. But this version is just amazing. What a great presentation. Thank you!
As a document for recording what’s gone it’s good to preserve. I’m not sure Bailey was ever more than a decent photographer of the urban; although NW1 was certainly interesting enough. Too many images of middling quality across the series but Steidl as always do a nice job for a decent price.
