Hey viewer, thanks for coming by. Best to use real oem to figure out if the steering racks are the same. I’d go onto the site, check out your car and find the part number. If it’s the same part number, then it should be!
Thank you for watching! As for symptoms I’d say not strongly enough to say the thrust bushing was the cause. In the end it was my sway bar end links (check pt.2) so I’d say look at those if you have a louder clunk
I found myself in a tricky situation: the steering wheel feels too tight and re-centers too slowly after corners, but if I loosen the steering rack, the knocking sound returns 😅. Any advice? Thanks!
I felt slightly tigher compared to previous after replacing the rack. Will it become a bit looser if I drive more, e.g. a few more weeks? Don't want to bother going underneath the car again.
It will feel tighter as the bushing has been refreshed. If it’s significantly tighter, where when you turn the wheel doesn’t come back to center, it should most likely be loosened
Why are sway bar links not solid ? What's the need for movement in both those joints ? I see u can actually buy sportier solid ones. I was thinking of filling those rubber boots with 3M polyurethane sealant. What do u think ?
great vid and excellent conclusion! im currently owning a 328i f30 as first car also, pretty much the same experience. at first i got buyers remorse of not getting a 335i but after a year of having it im loving it, thing to point out this is a rebuilt title so the process of getting the car back in shape has been a complete journey. planning to do the same later with a e92 335i, and still keep de F30, this car is a joy to drive when maintenance is on point.
Thanks for sharing! I’m very glad to hear yours has been treating you well. At the end of the day we can only enjoy what we’ve got. These cars will be around and it’s definitely never a bore to drive. Keep loving the car!
I find after doing this the steering feel improved to be better than original. Also I have VAC monoball control arms. There’s actual steering feedback on my F30.
Glad to hear that! F chassis electro steering is often a let down, I personally really enjoy it, having driven almost every modern BMW in existence (not lived with though!) there’s certainly worse out there :)
Hi @ramen9996, I own a BMW F25 X3 and it has horrible steering when driving; it pulls left or right while normal driving on the highway, and it has noise when moving steering when standing in one place. If I replace the steering rack thrust bushing, will it improve steering?
you mean you closed it with 80Nm thenn u released it by half and it was most of the time a great result? im asking cuz i also need to do this on my own car and im not really sure how exactly. i dont want to lift the car 10 times
Recently I got my 230i here in Europe and I must say it's a great car, the handling is superb, the chassis (I've got almost a full option with m pack and other stuff) absorbs bumps comfortably, and the power is ideal, I drove the 240, and it's great too don't get me wrong, but I just had the feel I can push the 230 on normal roads more, I don't track, so the 230 was my go too, cheers from Poland y'all bmw fanatics!
My oil shot across the drain opening and onto the underbody cover. 5 quarts went all over the ground. I'm so pissed wtf BMW why not make a bigger fn door?
Talk about a quick oil change lol! Sorry to hear that, happens to the best of us. My favorite slip up is when I forget to put the drain plug back in when pouring new oil in! Thanks for watching
Hey there thanks for the watch. Unfortunately couldn’t tell you. The hydraulic steering racks have different issues but I’m sure it could be related to something within that system
It can be heard easier with the car off as the assisted steering is off and the mechanical bits can be easily heard. Even with the new bushing in I do still have a bit of clunk but it is significantly less
Hey there thanks for watching. Not necessarily, I’d say this is only if needed! I only did it as a precaution since it was easy to change and a fairly affordable cost
This is a great simple repair if your steering is having this clicking issue. My clicking went away and my steering became a little more firm and sporty like it was originally.
Mine had it already after 4y and 40k km. Very annoying and It's not only the noise the car also drives very bad on long straight lines on highway. After repair (dealership) noise was indeed gone, but the correct steering feel never game back. In my opinion it feels more loose due to the two rubber gaskets on the new part, it turns too lite. I can only say the steering is bad in all bmw f series ( 3,4, and 5 series) all using the same shitty electric power steering rack. Came from a lexus IS which also already had a electric steering but was much better in feel and straight line stability. The BMW only feels nice on twisty raod, highway is bad also with the new part. Also have a Mini now 75k km, also start to clunk. I can only conclude BMW' products are not the best quality you can buy. Some parts are really poor (costdown) not to speak of the timing chain problem most engines suffer of on the f series
Hey there thanks for the watch! I agree that the electric racks definitely aren’t the best, especially in this first move after the hydraulic steering of the older models. The current g is an improvement but as soon as you put them in sport they feel way over boosted and artificially heavy. Unfortunately I don’t think we’ll ever see a perfect replica
@@EuroFeverGarage Yes correct the G series dozs feel better let's say more natural for a sport orientated car. But indeed the sports is just overboosting.
Did it on mine and cant get it to center proper. Comes back ok when turning right but when turning left it centers to about 11:55 and overall feels like its pulling ng to the left 🤔
Hey there, thanks for watching the video. If the turning of the steering wheel feels tighter than before, as in more difficulty, then you may need to loosen how many turns you did on the bushing. If the issue persists, you may be having an alignment issue but that would be my initial thoughts!
I could not agree more about this platform. I bought one a few months ago and love driving it. I also have an m550i but prefer the 230i in the city. The 5 series is far better on road trips though. Nice honest review.
Hey there! Thanks for the comment! I’m glad you agree. I’ve had a lot of experience across the entire lineup and for those looking for the purest drive, the 230 really provides that. Do you have both platforms? 550 and 230 is an awesome garage to have!
Hey there, thanks for the comment. Are you talking about a wobble while driving? I did not have that issue, as mine was over bumps, my suspension was making a clunk noise. However if you turn the wheel back and forth while the car is off there was a very audible thunk from my worn thrust bushing
I have a 2021 230i xDrive (previous generation 230i) and have been thinking about moving up to a current gen M240i xDrive, but your comments in favour of the 230 because of its lighter/better handling feel are a comfort to me and a reason for me to stick with what I already have, a slightly smaller and lighter version of today’s 230i xDrive.
Hey David, glad to hear you enjoyed my commentary! As for your car, the f22 is a great platform and I know many said the f chassis were a major divergence from prior e chassis such as the e82 1 series and e90 3 series, mainly due to the shift away from hydraulic steering and no more naturally aspirated engine options. I think the first gen 2 series is a great upgrade. It keeps the 1 series ideals but modernizes them. Unfortunately the successor to that one (g42) starts to stray quite far and it’s felt in the driving dynamics. In whatever car you choose, as long as you enjoy it, that’s what matters!
I've got some creaking when turning the steering 180 while stationary, sometimes there's a clunk, but mostly creaking. BMW diagnosis was this thrust piece and also steering spindle bottom w joint.
@@EuroFeverGarage it's a bit both, but more so when doing lock to lock. I hope the diagnosis is correct for the same noise when accelerating from stationary.
@@anonymoustravelvidz Obviously these techs would know more than I, so I do hope they solve your issue. I have heard top hats are also known to creak, though not clunk as far as I've seen, so it may be time to just do some sort of front end refresh
@anonymoustravelvidz Have you figured it out? that creaking noise might be coming from your inner tie rod. I was also getting a creaking noise with the full lock turns when stationary & replaced both my tie rods & the noise is gone. & my thrust piece has been replaced as well a year prior so I know that wasn;'t contributing to the creaking
Right on! Yeah my oci’s are strictly based on usage or time. 6-8 months and no more than 5k miles but closer to 4k for my and my girlfriend’s driving habits Thanks for watching :)
They should have a similar system. Many of the bmw’s with electric steering racks have this bushing If you go to the link in the description, it should show you which cars are compatible

thank you for the support! I have a lot of thing planned with the car, so I appreciate all the help I can get! the NA 6 cylinder is a dying breed, and it's addictive power curve is what brought me in. Hoping to keep it on the road forever
What are your thoughts on the F32? Should BMW have just kept the 3 series as one model? Couple corrections I wanted to add: In regards to the comment on the m3 platform, I meant to say the f80 was the first induction m3, sporting the new twin turbo s55. Additionally, to clarify, when mentioning the f36 gran coupe, when I stated it was based off the 6 series', I should have stated it's the same idea-not based off, insinuating it was the same platform. The f36 is part of the 4 series platform!
