The real Landsknechte where expensive and feared mercenarys, they fought for many kings and used to be marauders and arsonists. They where good fighters to. They used to fight in tight formations with realy long Pikes, called "Spieße", mixed with some dudes with these extreme big swords, the "Zweihänder/Bidenhänder". They had the job to break enemy Pike lines. Later they use more and more men with arquebuses (?) (sorry i dont know how to call this word properly in english) and cannons.

Also sowas wie Leiharbeiter heute.

Small objection: Eisenhauer is not the manufacturer of the Sabreblade. If the word Eisenhauer is on the blade, that means it was tested by hewing through an iron rod, which caused no damage to the blade. -> Eisenhauer is a "quality title". (Eisen=iron hauer= hewer)
@GeneralMcCracker
@GeneralMcCracker 4 года назад
Thanks for the comment! I read somewhere on the German internet that "Eysenhawer" etc. (older spelling) or modern "Eisenhauer" was one of the manufacturers in Solingen. Indeed both of it can be truth, as their mark became a mark of quality and was copied by other manufacturers? Similar what happened to the Wilkinson proof slug.
@nirfz
@nirfz 4 года назад
@@GeneralMcCracker Technically it would be possible that there was a blademaker with this name. But that would be the same as if in english you would take the word "leadcutter" of a hanger as a possible manufacturers name. Technically possible but very unlikely. Eisenhauer is a descitpive term for someone/thing that hews through iron. If the word appears on an austrian sabre it is because this particular example has been tested. This info i have from a book by the military history museum in vienna. They have a quite expensive book, that covers austrian sabres from 1848 to WW1. And the testing a tiny bit. Eisenhauer was indeed only put on austrian blades if the blade had been successfully tested on cutting through an iron rod without damage to the blade. ( i don't know the diameter of the rod or anything like that, they didn't specify it in the book.

A lot of forms actually start and finish with the point to the ground. Look at Godinho's rules for example. It's not like you're going to ruin a sword just by resting the tip on the ground. Those weapons were made for large cuts, not really for thrustnig anyway. Plus, you can always resharpen it without too much of a hastle.

@tiringsarcasm
@tiringsarcasm 2 года назад
Essentially they would attempt to break the stalemate between pikes by doing what the reply above me mentioned. Landsknechte were used like elite shock troopers during the pike and shot era and were very expensive because of the skill needed to be one.

@Kuhmuhnistische_Partei
@Kuhmuhnistische_Partei Год назад
@@maxbayer5319 Have fun destroying those pikes, the shafts are quite thick and the wood very hard and you also don't hit against a piece of wood that's locked in place, so most of the energy will be wasted by just moving the pike a bit. Maybe they were used to push the pikes out of the way and once behind the deadly ends of the pikes they could directly attack those who are holding them. I also know of a type of fighter that was equiped with shields (rondaches) and one-handed swords, later often rapiers. They were specifically there to come close to pike formations and attack them in close quarter. Another possibility is that the greatswords were mostly used for bodyguards, who would be experienced vets and they were only used as a backup and their main purpose was to defend a space with wide swings as we see with Montante fighting techniques.

They're not slow, they're just not ridiculously deep like in sport fencing. Because when you fully commit all your weight forward and you don't land, you die in an actual sword fight. That's why historical fencing systems almost never use the goofy ass lunges you see in olympic fencing.
