We can consider the cast of a Neanderthal in Gánovce (Poprad district) as the oldest evidence of the use of geothermal springs. According to research, he was probably bathing in a warm mineral spring at the time of his death. In Dudinci, a well-known spa town, there are bathtubs cut in travertine dating back to the Roman Empire. Mineral water was supplied to them.
Current spa towns in Slovakia are interesting because the spa industry has a long tradition here. Practically all of them have used mineral waters, applications of mud and peat for healing effects since the modern age.
Juraj Wehner, an important humanist who worked on our territory in the 16th century, is considered the founder of balneography in Slovakia.
