As a nearly-graduated CS student at Portland State, I mourn the fact that I just barely missed the opportunity to take a course with Professor Mitchell. Melanie’s voice is refreshingly honest and level-headed in our current world of AI hysteria.
Everyone is like "i made this in 200bc with my great grand uncle sextuple removed". did you advocate for air quality for 20 years? Did you do research to show its effectiveness versus hepa filters? Did you show its effectiveness for removing viral particles in different room sizes? I didnt think so.
Simple method to get 97% or more of the results. Take your fan and one merv 13 filter. Turn the fan on and simply place the filter on the back of the fan. Air pressure will hold the filter in place until you turn the fan off. Requires no tape and takes only 15 seconds to set up. In short order most of the room's air will have been filtered as the air runs through the filter several times over and over. Do not worry about a few molecules escaping the first minute of use. When the filter needs changing, simply repeat the process. No need to replace 4 filters each time. Its called the Cheap-Skate Box. No professors or Phds were harmed in this process. (Optional use of N-95 mask during the early minutes while the room's air is filtered several times.)
High quality filters are way too expensive to be using 4 at a time. I just buy 1 good quality filter and slap it on the back on the fan and call it done.
can you use the sides of the box to create a circular shroud on the inside of the fan? that way the box is completely used. back panel for the bottom, front panel for the top (with circular hole cut out in the diameter of the fan blades), and hten the remaining thin edges would be used to create the circular shroud.
Please note in putting the box together he had one edge on inside and opposite edge one the outside. if you do this with all four you'll have a square instead of a rectangle. wasn't sure why that wasn't made clear and yeah, i know, most of us would say well that's obvious... but this is the internet after all.... also my guess is by putting those triangle corners you've lifted the fan enough that you've probably created about as much space as you remedied. so you could just make sure it's well taped?
You know, I want to ask if he knows the type of bearing the fan uses, a sleeve bearing or ball, because placing the fan like that with a sleeve bearing could cause it to go out pretty quick. Then I looked at the channel's name and think maybe that's a stupid question to ask a literal engineering professor.
lol...ummm folks just do this ...takes less room and holds back smoke and oders better than any filter out there = just put window screen on back of fan and 2 Paterson of paper towls....TRUST ME...
Wait until he invents the Corsi-Rosenthal box that has a particulates catch. I can’t wait to see it somewhere other than my workspace (for 6 years) it’ll be great. Also there’s a mod for preventing it from simply recirculating the air it just filtered
Yes and it doesn't have all that stupid crap in it like wifi and lights to tell you when the filters need to be replaced. Because you can see the filter media ! LOL
No offense but think this is essentially just like typical air purifier, just with different materials and filter type to maximize the amount of clean air while maintaining low budget
He should specify that the Tape he is using to tape the filters together is actually painter's tape was just basically micropore tape which basically filters air and keeps dust particles out same thing you using biology and science and medical field and all that
