Jim Luken Outdoors features outdoor life and recreation in coastal South Carolina: fishing, boating, hiking, gardening, nature viewing, and history, as well as parks, nature preserves, management areas and outdoor settings where these activities occur. One series of videos gives a sense of the unique history shaping the coastal South Carolina fish and wildlife landscape based on a new book, titled "Coastal South Carolina Fish and Game: History, Culture and Conservation." Playlists provide valuable do it yourself (DIY) and instructional information for outdoor sports and nature enthusiasts, homeowners, as well as government and non-government organizations. Content provides updates and insights on events affecting the lives of people living in and visiting coastal South Carolina. I live near Myrtle Beach and operate a fishing charter business that focuses on the Waccamaw River and nearby inshore areas.

The key is to make something strong enough to keep deer out but easy enough to move around so you can get in to weed and water. I used some chicken wire this year with cheap plastic green stakes. They are super easy to move in and out when I water and weed but the stakes bend and give too easy. It worked for awhile but last night they finally worked up enough nerve to just trample right over it. Today I have bit off green pepper plants, chewed up beans and they even munched on my tomato plants. A lot of sweat and dirty hands right down the toilet in one night! Looks like I'll have to use stronger posts next time. That will make it harder for me to get into the garden. I thought about using them drawstring nettings next time for my peppers and tomatoes. The last few years I used netting and hoops for my beans and that works great to keep everything out but it's a lot of work.😮‍💨

Why didn’t you show the deer staying out of the area with the trail camera?

Jim: I watched your video yesterday. Bought 5 ft. stakes and 30 lb. fishing line. Installed the posts and line. For the first time in 3 months, my security cameras did not record video of deer destroying my garden. I will provide an update in 30 days but I'm so excited that I may having found---thanks to you!---a way to keep these beautiful pests out of my yard!!! Thank you!

Mosquito circle hooks work as well. This way, you don't have to go up in size to use a circle hook. I use them for fresh water and saltwater.

Nice. I always use distilled water or rain water. I’m assuming watering the bog garden first time with tap from the hose be won’t affected by it.

This is a really good video covering the basics. I followed this kind of plan myself and found it helpful. But I also found maintaining the plants to be tricky because of a couple factors, or at least some issues came up. To start with, there is the pot. If it's outside, then it seems it could risk getting flooded from rainwater and drowning the plants. One way to keep it from getting flooded could be to put holes at half of the height of the pot. But the risk then is that the water could just run out through the holes and dry out the contents. The pot could dry out if you aren't careful about keeping it watered. One way to try to address this problem is to put a terrarium glass over it, which also has the benefit of keeping the humidity at a good level. But the problem there is that if it's outside, then the glass could make it really hot inside of the terrarium and essentially bake the plants. Then another problem is that the soil can freeze in the winter. If you plant it in the ground, then it's not as much of a problem because in the ground, it's only the top layer that ices. But the problem is that in a jar, the contents are more susceptible to freezing and thus killing the plants. Admittedly the tubs in this video are so big that this might not be an issue. All the best.

I used the same 8-foot high polypropylene fence, but I installed Rebar instead of the 6 foot U-bar because I can easily order from ACE 10 foot rebars. I also found that by leaving only one entrance/exit walkway free of any fence, the deer never came into my garden to eat. The deer could have easily come into my garden through my single entrance/exist walkway, but they never did. By the way, since you have your polypropylene fence touch the ground, how do you kill the weeds that grow there?

I have a 2072VFX. It looks the same as yours less a few items. I liked that SeaArk let me pick and chose what I wanted. And yes my hatches do leak. I was told the boat needs to be level but they still leak. I love the 15 degree stepped V hull. It is great for trolling, tracks nice and straight. The 2023 115 has double camshafts which makes for a more powerful and efficient motor. Great Rig!

I used this exact fencing for my garden, until one day, I went out there to get a tomato ,an what did I find, but 2 dead butterflies an a little bird that was severely caught, so this horrible junk plastic came down, this stuff I will never have on my property again, I'll give up a tomato to never cause this again, I really don't know how to destroy it,without causing harm to our environment

We tried this and the deer kept breaking the line and then tearing up the garden. We have a heavy deer population and the only thing that actually keeps deer out is an electric fence combined with Livestock horse fencing.

Been doing this for years, and for the first few years, it worked fine. Unfortunately, they get wise and start finding ways to get through. I think desperation and starvation from the worst winter we had a couple of years ago made them determined to get through those lines, and now that they found a way through, they now do it all the time, even when theres still vegetation out there. They EASILY chew the fishing line (been using the 50 lb) and even push through between lines once they leave a big gap between them. It's been hard trying to keep up and repairing the lines almost daily now, so I've started looking for other ways to keep them out of my plants.

I'm now a salt water angler (freshwater for many years before) and like most of you with the problem hooking small aggressive species in gut. I usually fishing with a bolognese rod in the cost and no problem to me to modify the technique to use this hooks. I heard that it's not necessary to strike, you only have to reeling softly. What did you make in the moment you notice the fish eat the lure?
