I disagree. This movie is a 10/5 for all the barriers it breaks through, as well as for layer after layer of good writing, good storytelling, good messages and the faithfulness to the survivors’ testimonies. If this movie makes you uncomfortable, I’m sorry, but too bad. None of us will see a better movie than this for YEARS.

This movie deserves an Oscars! This is a cinematic masterpiece, not only because of the aesthetics, art, photography, make-up or script, but because the story is real and truthful as possible.... And may I ask: why no focus on one of THE REAL HERO of the story - SERGIO CATALAN ? The man that found them was Sergio Catalan, a Chilean muleteer. (And this is Sergio Catalan's story). He was moving his animals through the mountain and happened to come across them. He said that at first he thought they were tourists. However, the more he looked at them he realized how poor their condition was. (But) because of the stream he couldn't hear them. So he had to go and get a piece of paper and a pen so the boys could communicate with him. Once he got their message he rode on his horse 10 hours to the closest police station. He said it took him what was left of the day and the whole night to get there and you were right in your reaction. When he arrived they didn't believe him. They thought he was drunk and making it up. However, since he refused to budge and he had the letter they decided to go ahead with the rescue... After they were rescued the survivors developed a really close relationship with him. Some of them said he was like a father to them. When he got sick and needed hip replacement surgery, the boys paid for his medical bills and Roberto helped him get treatment quickly since he was now a doctor. Sergio passed away in 2020 and Gustavo Zerbino attended his funeral in representation of the survivors. He carried his coffin and gave a speech to say goodbye to him. " There should be a PART II of the Society of the Snow, with the story focusing on SERGIO CATALAN... People may disagree with me, but for me, Sergio Catalan is NOW a member of the Society of Snow - and ONE OF THE HEROES... So, I repeat, there should be a Part II...

That’s a fair take but at the end of the day, the first Dune lost out to movies like Coda and Power of the Dog. Conclave seems like it’ll be a flat out better movie than those and although Dune 2 is better, it released in March and is the middle part of a trilogy so those will probably hold it back

I totally agree! I remember like right after I recorded the review I realized I completely forgot to mention the music and was bummed. I would've recorded an extra bit to talk about it but I had an essay to write. But anyways, yeah, the needle drops were VERY odd and they came it at very odd cuts as well. I'd assume it's a directorial take by Garland but not necessarily one I agree with. I did like the score however. It felt a lot like "The Last of Us" and the ominous feelings and tension of that show are very similar to this film so I thought it worked.

I agree, I found it to be presented in the trailer I watched as an action movie. One of the quotes even said "Best Action This Year" or something like that. While it was not blatant misrepresentation, it was misrepresentation in the sense of suggestion.
@LoganLikesMovies
@LoganLikesMovies Месяц назад
Exactly, like its not necessarily misrepresentation cause there is action and what was excellently made, but the action wasn't the center of this film at all nor was this movie even an action movie really. So advertising the film based on the action when it account for a small fraction of the runtime feels false to me.

We have not had real Journalism or Jounalist in over 50 years. What we have is talking heads that parrot the Socialist Left propaganda.
@chadlejeune9834
@chadlejeune9834 Месяц назад
It’s so interesting how many reviewers I’ve watched and people I’ve talked to about this film found it too empty or ambiguous, whereas I found it so beautifully precise in its purpose and storytelling. I personally thought it was paced very well, with little bloat the perfect amount of reprieve. I purpose of the movie to be encapsulated in two of Lee's quotes. The first, that it's the job of a photojournalist to not ask the questions but take and report the picture and let the viewers ask the questions. The second, that she hoped that going overseas and taking photos of war would caution those at home and prevent going in the same direction. I think this film is Alex Garland taking a small snapshot of a possible future to caution us in the present and provide the space for viewers ask the questions. The film intentionally doesn't make any commentary, doesn't ask questions, but displays a sequence of scenes and let the viewers come up with the questions and opinions. And I think this is where friends I've talked to were confused, since they are used to the movies at least asking the questions if not providing the answers. I didn't interpret journalism as a major theme but rather the primary method, lens (ba-da-bum-tsss), to view the major theme. I believe the story starting at the end of the war, without much context, very intentional. To me, the primary theme is the horror and degradation of the civilization, and the person, is the sure result of a civil war, regardless of the original sides and intentions. No matter what the starting political views are, no matter what you start fighting for, the nation afterwards will be unrecognizable. The worst of mankind will be let free, many will lose sight of what they’re fighting for and will fight just to survive. And after one side wins, who’s to say the fighting ends there and the regime that follows isn’t worse. The original "whys" aren't what really matter, because this is what you end up with. Then there are smaller themes throughout each scene. I found the scene with Jesse Plemons the violent conclusion in war of something I see today where people on both sides of the political spectrum don’t care to know your story or why you believe something but are willing to vilify you and write you off based on one thing: which side you vote for. In that scene too, but also throughout the movie, I definitely kept thinking that the downfall of society would definitely let free the worst (and maybe best) of humanity. Another question of whether it's right or wrong to try to stay out of a civil war, and what it would take for you to join in on the fight. As I'm just now thinking about it... another funny question the film brings up for me relates to journalism and the reviews and criticisms of this movie! I question whether people wanting this movie to take a stance reflects the majority of people who also expect that from their news source. They want to see facts and stories processed in a way that makes sense with their political ideology, and don't know what to do with purely a fact (or in the movie's case a story) put in front of them without a pre-defined political context. I don't think many people are comfortable asking their own questions and processing themselves. Nothing about the storytelling is incredibly complex, but I do think it was precise and impactful as long as the viewer doesn't try making the film more ambitious than a cautionary snapshot.
@LoganLikesMovies
@LoganLikesMovies Месяц назад
I love this take. However, I do think a big reason people expected this movie to take some sort of stance was the way it was advertised and the fact that it's being released during an election year. I think if the advertising leaned a LOT more into the journalism and "road trip" through a brutal dystopian depiction of Americana aspects of this film, people would appreciate it a lot more. But also yeah, we live in a world where opinions are fed to us and having to draw our own conclusions is challenging. It's been almost a week since I've seen the film and I'm still thinking about the ending and my own take on it.

I like the fact that Garland doesn’t harp on the revolution aspect of it. If he did, we’d automatically route for one side, which is the exact opposite of what the film is trying to do. Napoleon was, to say the least, the WORST Napoleon-film EVER!!! Not only were many battle-scenes wrong(no, the british DIDN'T dug trenches in WATERLOO; I am from Belgium and there NEVER EVER has been anything but a trace of trench-digging uncovered by any archeologist!!!) but also the main characters in the film, Josephine and Napoleon, the depiction of them in this film; Napoleon was several years younger than Josephine and although their relation was anything but peaceful, Napoleon was NEVER her lapdog, as the film insinuates that!

Overcrowded is right because there are too many people and they did not exactly what to do? If you could take some of the characters out, maybe it would help. Not really, because the villain did not do much in this movie. The villain need more screen presence in this one and he was just waddling around freezing stuff. I like your movie review on this one.
@LoganLikesMovies
@LoganLikesMovies 2 месяца назад
Yeah thats how I felt too with the villain. It felt like we got a lot more time with the villain as an orb than as an actual entity. If this film really focused more on the new main characters with some ending cameos of the OG Ghostbusters I think it would've been a lot better. Also, the lab aspect took up wayyyy too much exposition and could've easily just not been in there

Regarding the end. I hear you. And I promised myself this year when I "don't like" something about a film, I’ll push to understand the “why” of it. I allow myself to be as creative in that exercise, and it could be me and not the filmmaking. I do this because I cannot imagine filmmakers/writers giving up at the end of their work. Especially non-blockbusters. I appreciate your perspective. The reverb of LLB has stayed with me for days. Currently, I'm looking into queer theory and magical realism ;-) Cheers!

As a Pacific Islander, I really enjoyed this movie because of the representation and it was just really nostalgic for me, that's why it makes sense that you wouldn't enjoy it as I did. because you're pakeha. So this movie isn't really for you. It's for pacific people's that's why you would find it bland, but I loved it. 1:09 "feel unique" well, not to you of course. I think you are being harsh on the fact that Taika Waititi "ruined" the movie. He wasn't trying to make it Oscar worthy, It really is just for representation purposes and if you don't understand it than idk. Suck it up maybe, you're ruining the experience trying to hold this film to Jojo Rabbit and Taikas other blockbuster films. But for me it was 5 stars.

(⚠️ Spoilers ⚠️) I have mixed feelings about KFP4, it has great fighting scenes much like the other movies, but it doesnt do much to stand out as a good movie. I feel the reasoning they made this film, is because DreamWorks wants a good amount of money for a film, so they decide to make another sequel for one of their greatest franchises out there. Overall, despite the absence of the Furious Five, it was kinda enjoyable. I like the scenes of the two dads looking for Po, but the main antagonist is kind of generic, and is kinda lame, Aquafina was less annoying than I thought she'd be. The main problem I have with this film, is that it shows not much depth in it, which is kinda disspointing, bc its what makes the KFP movies appealing for both younger and older audience. At the end of the day, its just an okay KFP movie, I rate it a 6/10. Hopefully, 5 will be better, and more exciting since the Furious Five will make a grand return, because seems like DreamWorks are low on money right now on paying the actors, so I hope this movie made enough money for a better sequel.
