Healthcare must be accessible to everyone, including those living with disabilities. Learn how healthcare is failing our community. We will explore case studies of discrimination, the language of exclusion, and how healthcare entities use high-control techniques to exclude our most vulnerable in society from this critical access need. It is a study in systemic discrimination, the ugly underbelly of healthcare that our nondisabled counterparts don't experience.

Videos of fiber art creation will be used as a counterbalance to the heavy nature of the material (pun intended).

Thanks for this video! I just had the same problem and it's the first time I use my new ashford table loom. I wanted to ask you: is it normal that while I knot the warp on the front band and pull it slightly to try to get a uniform tension, the rear brake abandons me and comes forward a few notches ruining all my effort? Or is there something wrong with the assembly of the frame? Thanks if you can help me, I'm feeling very frustrated....
@healthcarefails
@healthcarefails 3 месяца назад
The rear break shouldn't be releasing when you tighten the knots when warping on. If the rear break releases with tension, it isn't doing its job and won't hold tension while you weave. Definitely look at the assembly and see if you have the pawl and ratchet inserted backwards causing the pawl to slip with tension. Hope that helps!

WOW, that is just so clever! Excellent problem-solving!! Also, eight yards is a loooong warp. Can't wait to see your design as you work! Did you decide to do the Knit Picks Palette yarn triple, and at ten knots per inch? Or is this a different project altogether?

Thanks, it's been fun problem solving it. The design is going to be a tartan pattern for my husband, a little bit simpler for the first big project. This is the same project, a 20-foot-plus long hallway runner. You got it, I'm going to use Knit Picks Palette held triple at 10 knots per inch. I wanted to get a quick video up to show the concept before I get too far into it all, but I do plan to post videos of the project as it goes along and the process. Hopefully it will be useful.

I'm planning to start my own small hand-knotted (Turkish knots) rug in the near future, and I'm glad to finally find someone else who is doing this on an accessible scale! Can you tell me please, where did you get your yarn for knotting, and what weight is it? Also, are you using wool for your weft threads, or the cotton warp? I'm planning to build a loom and will use 8/4 cotton warp as well, so appreciate any guidance or suggestions you may have.
@healthcarefails
@healthcarefails Год назад
Hi, Elizabeth! What I'm about to say are the plans, but it may end up modified as I get further into the project, so be patient with that aspect. This will get you in the ballpark though or at least get your ideas flowing. I'll be using 8/4 cotton for warp and weft; I got Maysville 8/4 cotton from www.dickblick.com. The wool I'm using is Knit Picks Palette fingering weight wool yarn. I was going to use Appletons crewel wool, but it is mothproofed and I didn't want to chance reactions (I have reactions to a variety of chemicals, so best to keep it simple). Appletons has a much wider selection of colors if that is important. Palette yarn is double the thickness, cheaper, and without mothproofing, so really is up to you which one works for you. I have spaced the warp threads 28 threads per inch. Each knot will need two warp threads, so that is 14 knots per inch. I'm not sure if I will be using the fingering weight wool held double or triple, but I suspect triple. The Palette yarn is about double the thickness of Appletons crewel. The Appletons appears to be held six threads at a time, which would be Palette held triple. However, I'll adjust that later if needed. My project is planned to be done in 28-inch widths, so 'manageable' modules. I'll be doing a triple width where I will attach the previous panels as I work the new panels. Trust me, it works out in my head, and I will make videos of it because I think others will want to know. It will definitely be an adventure. The finished rug, if I can do it the way I envision, will be approximately 7 feet x 8 feet, a nice area rug for the living room. Hopefully that helps a little!

Where did you get your metal beater, or loop puller thruer? Cotton warp? Like your colors !! Feel inspired, but just a frame loom and hurts neck so want to make a stand for better posture.

@healthcarefails Год назад
The metal beater and knife with hook were purchased from this etsy store: www.etsy.com/listing/1378127462/rug-weaving-comb-daftin-or-daffeh?ref=yr_purchases The cotton warp shown here is some cotton fingering weight yarn that I had in my stash. For the real project, I purchased 8/4 cotton warp from this website: www.dickblick.com/products/maysville-cotton-warp/?fromSearch=%2Fsearch%2F%3Fsearchword%3Dmaysville The real project is about ready to get underway. I have it warped to an Ashford knitter's loom (28-inch loom) that will lean against a table. I may end up making a stand for it as well. This is the first project on a loom used for rugs, so I anticipate a lot of tinkering to get the ergonomics to work well.

What type of loom would normally be used for this? Thanks
@healthcarefails
@healthcarefails Год назад
The traditional looms are basically just rough 2x4-style construction with readily available hardware to modify it. Since I have both a 32-inch table loom and a 28-inch rigid heddle loom, I'm going to use them instead and do a modification of sorts. The principle is that the warps need to be under enough tension to firmly beat each weft/knot row into place, and you have to be able to create two sheds for the weft threads to alternate between. The other thing is that these are generally done in the upright position, maybe with a slight lean away from the artist. I have a sit/stand desk that can be raised quite a bit, and I should be able to lean the rigid heddle loom (locked in the flat position since it is a foldable one) against the desk when it is raised to create enough of an 'upright' to work easily. I'll have to tinker with this aspect, so it may change significantly. If my plans don't work, I may make an upright stand for the looms. Right now I want to avoid new equipment so that I don't have yet another piece of equipment to store in my small studio. Hoping that I can repurpose my existing looms for the rug making.

Wow that is one full cloth beam; good job! And did you use six different boat or stick shuttles for those washcloths at the end? Impressive keeping them organized!
@healthcarefails
@healthcarefails Год назад
When it was three full-size washcloths on the warp, I used three separate boat shuttles. Worked perfectly for the size and the yarn management. When I split it off for the six tiny washcloths at the end, the boat shuttles were just way too long compared to the individual six panels. At that point, I changed just to the 4-inch bobbins alone without the boat shuttles, which was perfect. Still kicking myself that I didn't take a video of that part of the weaving. It would be nice to show it in action.

I to am tried of having to fight for my access to medical and other. No one cares, it’s worse since covid as immune compromised. The problem of medical is that they see us as a failure that they cannot deal with it, that’s the medical model, there needs global adoption of the social model, society disables us, not our condition
@healthcarefails
@healthcarefails Год назад
Absolutely! How is it that we are 'too ill' for medical care? Isn't the entire purpose of the healthcare system's existence to provide healthcare? Shouldn't people with disabilities be guaranteed MORE complete access to healthcare, not left to make due with the scraps we scrounge up and the DIY care we can figure out on our own? Disability isn't the problem; it never has been. The healthcare systems rationing care to those they deem worthy enough for it is the problem. The healthcare systems robbing us of our autonomy and forcing us into their eugenics model is the problem. The healthcare systems leaving in place barriers that prevent us from care, and then blaming us for not overcoming those barriers to get care...that's the problem. Robust legislation is required. Swift and hefty punishment for violating the civil rights of anyone, specifically a marginalized person, especially those who are most vulnerable.

This is my experience as well. It is particularly egregious and downright deadly when it is healthcare that is inaccessible. Exactly! There was a study done, and one of the doctors in the study said that people with disabilities are an entitled population. Stunning admission, but very much in line with every experience I've had with healthcare. What it comes down to really is this: How dare we the disabled exist, let alone feel that we have a right to exist? As if the disability community is the problem, when the problem actually is that society is not accessible and refuses to become accessible.

I recently had to do a replacement heddle and I initially tried cutting and reattaching one of the tex-solv heddles but found it a challenge. Whereas tying on a repair heddle was actually much easier than I would have expected. It was just easier to get the loops around my heddle bars. Great call out on the color coding the heddles, that probably would have prevented the issue altogether! I'll be looking up the under cabinet lighting as well. Could really use that on the more complex threading patterns.
@healthcarefails
@healthcarefails Год назад
Replacement heddles are such a pain. I'm a firm believer in doing whatever works for you. So glad you were able to fix it!! The color coding definitely lessens the chances of needing to do a fix. Also dispersing your extra empty heddles throughout the warp helps as well, because you may have an empty heddle very close by for a fix. Always, whatever works. Complex patterns are beautiful, but we definitely have to plan ahead for them. 😁

Do I make myself sick so that I can access healthcare, or do I stay home and hope for the best, that those abnormal cells behave. I dressed my Ashford table loom and with-in 6 picks I knew I needed a different reed. For the fun of it I tried the 48" reed, and it works! you can't fold up the loom and you have wings sticking out both sides. But it does work.
