Mac : Howrah bridge has no pillars or supports in the middle so as to keep its underbelly clear so even quite tall boats can pass under it. This type of bridge is called a Cantilever bridge The Howrah bridge was completed in 1942. All the special steel used ( resists corrosion from salt water ) was made 200 miles west of Calcutta. In 1974 I met one of the Designers of the Bridge who was then a Director of a famous Engr. Co. In Calcutta. There is a more modern Bridge ( about 40 yrs old, couple miles downstream / south of the Howrah Bridge That one is Suspension Bridge like the Golden Gate SFO )
