I am 29 and have the RX10iv. Great camera and super fun. Now I have bursitis in both shoulders, I can still shoot because my camera doesn't have a bazooka on the front.
I have both setups the a9/GM combo and RX10m4. I find myself grabbing my RX10m4 when my family goes on vacation or events where I don't want to worry about my expensive gear. And the RX10m4 always impresses me. As you pointed out, you can't beat the a9/GM lens combo for professional gigs where you are selling your images. But some of my favorite photo's I've taken were taken on the RX10m4. The main thing I am hoping they improve with the RX10m5, is to use the Z100 battery from the Alpha line and maybe a tad lighter.
Awesome comparison! Been waiting for this review! I’m not a photographer but I think the RX10 IV would be the perfect camera for an average guy like me. Thanks.
+Pau Lo Hi, I don’t think you will regret your choice. With 24-600 mm you will be able to capture images most photographers can not simple because the RX20 offers more camera. Please send some of your favorite images once you are ready
As a two year RX10-IV owner, for me the bottom line for this comparison is this... Quick reaction shots requiring 350-600mm focal length are almost always going to be noticeably superior on the Sony 400mm 2.8 G Master interchangeable lens setup. Quick reaction shots requiring ANY OTHER FOCAL LENGTH are probably going to be better on the RX10-IV...because the interchangeable lens setup will likely MISS THE SHOT ENTIRELY. When the eagle is grabbing the fish out of the lake, would you rather have a "B grade" shot from the RX10-IV or no shot at all because your interchangeable lens setup had the wrong lens attached? The ability to go from 24mm to 600mm in under 3 seconds cannot be understated. This is why I always want my RX10-IV at my side regardless of what other photography equipment I have at my disposal.
I am sincerely hoping that Sony revives the RX10 in the near future along with the RX100 and possibly the RX1, it is by FAR the best travel and prosumer / enthusiast camera system out there.
I agree. I take mine with me every time I travel. My Rx10 iv has been to Europe and on Safari in Africa without me... as I have let two different family members take it on trips with them.
Two and a half years later, and still the V isn't out. This is a really long delay. I just hate sinking $1700 into a 5-year-old model. Really appreciate this comparison, though! Definitely not apples to apples, but it's very helpful to see what you get for $14K more, and to also hear your assessment of the RX10. If they come out with the V, I'll wait just long enough to make sure it's really an improvement, and then jump on it. If not, I'll get this old model after all. I'm a total amateur coming from an A580, which I absolutely despise--actually said I wasn't going with Sony again after that camera. But now, the RX10 IV has roped me in.
I have an rxiv. It's great for what it is...but to say you cant really see the difference is a bit of a stretch. You do. What needs to be said..for some reason no one ever does is you cant focus and zoom at the same time.(it does work in video) It does not function like normal lens/camera combo. If you take photography just a bit "too serious" this limitation will be a disappointment. While focussing is fast....having to zoom and refocus every time makes it hard to use sometimes. To boot...the lens reacts really slow. The iso limitation will also be annoying to some. Iso 800 is really really pushing it. (400 to me is already too noisy) Yes ideally everyone wants to stay at 100 but in real world situations or out n about in nature where one cant control the elements or lighting..it's nearly not doable.
These sorts of comparisons provide a great deal of useful information...once they get going. I had to check at one stage if I had clicked on the wrong clip, because so much of it seemed to be promoting the air show. Once the comparisons got going though, they were quite informative. It was not difficult to tell the difference in image quality between the two systems and I think it is appropriate, given the price differential. However, as the reviewer repeatedly pointed out, the RX-10 allows you to get the shot you want, and the next, and the next, etc, all without needing to change cameras or lenses. The RX-10 does not do anything as outstandingly well as the priced-out-of-most-people's-reach setup, but it is more than competent at a broad range of uses. I disagree that the RX-10 is "light" though - I'm finding it significantly less wieldy than my Panasonic FZ-1000, and am looking at bringing along a monopod (actually 1 leg from my sensational Innorel RT75C tripod) to just get a little more stability when I need a slower shutter speed.
Great video and fascinating comparison. Tbh I can barely notice a difference, the RX10iv is so good. Interestingly in my opinion the best shot you show here is the 24mm shot at 7:54... shot with the RX. Thank you 🙂
It’s always nice to see this kind of comparsions. For my private stuff I went with the RX100VII as it is even smaller, but I thought very often about the RX10IV lately. The thing is, that it feels like being from a different era. I think Sony should have gone for another body design, as this never matched any other Sony line. It’s just no fun to hold it. One could say it’s sexy as a fridge. But what you can ger out of it, is simply amazing and thats still the case after so many years now. AF system have gotten way better, but the image quality is still like in 2017. It would be so nice to see another version of the RX10IV. Think about, that these 2017 generation models are the last ones of their kind we will see. This would be very sad. Panasonic was even as honest to say, that there will be no further development for this section. So lets hope for a maybe new and last generation for the RX10/100.
@@ThePixelShowYT I suspect that any possibility of an RX10 v is slightly hindered by the apparent departure of Zeiss from film camera lens design/manufacture. Would Sony put out a mark 5 with the same lens as the previous two marks however good that is? Would customers see a Sony lens-equipped Mark 5 as a downgrade (regardless of how goo it actually was)? Personally, I'm more than happy to have bought a Mark 4 recently despite the age of the design because there isn't anything in the superzoom world that betters it for the kind of photography I do. As for the body design, I couldn't care less (I started with a 1950s Agfa Isolette 3 so anything after that is a step up)
I wonder why the colors are better on the FF. They have the same Bionz processor, yet A9's colors are more saturated. Is it just a matter of tweaking the image processing settings?
I have used Canon, Nikon, and Olympus over a 40 year career in stills photography. Since I went digital (around 2001), I went with Canon because of their glass. Once you have invested enough it's not easy to change. Now retired, I still have a huge inventory of Canon Gear, including 3 FF bodies, plus a couple of Nikon Df cameras (for the feel of the old film controls). However, for the times I want one camera only (when I am traveling with limited capacity for example) I use a bridge camera. I had used Canon SX40 to Sx60 units but was always frustrated by the tiny sensor. I tried the G3X with its 1" sensor and 24-600 lens, but was disappointed that there was no built-in EVF (essential to me for hand-held tele work). I sold it and switched brands for the Sony RX-10M4 because of the excellent optics, sensor, processor and quality of build. Most of my images are output to digital media now and that is significant, as the quality required for that is much less (IMHO) than for large, hi-res prints. So far I have found the camera to be an amazing performer and there are only a few things I would change. 1. Have a fully articulating screen - I have a chunk of metal where my knee should be and I prefer a fully adjustable screen when I can't bend down to get the angle I want. 2. Have more customization of buttons and touch control, and that goes with 3... 3. Really improve the menus - after using Canon's menu system Sony's is pretty awful. That said, apart from the articulation, these are all firmware or software tweaks and could be done without rebuilding what is an excellent unit at heart. I hope they apply some of these to a Mk5...
I have the RX10 III which has the same sensor and lens, and I am blown away by the quality of the sensor and the lens. You have to learn how to get the best results, but once you have done so, this camera will deliver great results. I guess with some better post processing, the images from the RX10 IV could have looked even better (this video is already a few years old).
Great comparison. I'm currently shooting with a Panasonic G85 with a 100-300mm lens for wildlife. But I'm keeping a close eye on when Sony releases the next version of this RX10, so much more convenient to just have everything in one package.
I have been shooting nature with the Sony A7R4 and a Sony 200 to 600 lens. The problem is it is just so heavy. I have missed many shots because I couldn't face taking it with me on a walk. I also had the indignity of Shutterstock rejecting a shot, which incidentally had been shortlisted in a competition, saying the camera equipment was sub standard. Anyway, I decided to sell a lens and buy the RX10 4. It is early days, but I have been blown away by this camera. Convenience, picture quality, flexibility, everything. I love it.
For the average amateur, this sounds like a great camera, especially for travel, etc. I'd love to have it (unless RX10 V comes out in couple of months) but feel the greatest limitation of this becoming a semi-pro camera is the ability to manual zoom - much faster and more control - and no auto focus while zooming. As a pro this is essential for moving subjects such as sports, animals (dog's running at camera), and any action where you need to zoom out as subject gets closer to photographer. Manual zoom you could have shot the portrait in two seconds, not 15 or so. Otherwise, nice review. If RX10 V would add these two elements, I'd sell my other gear in a second.
I do not work for Sony. I am however am a Sony Artisan of Imagery. Which means I am an ambassador for Sony. However, if that ended tomorrow, I'm not going anywhere. Sony is my brand.
Obviously, it’s a limitation of sensor size and focal length reach with image quality across the frame. Larger sensors lose the range of wide angle to super telephoto and image quality across both the full focal length and also across the entire frame at those different wide range focal lengths. The RX10v4 is a 1” sensor because it does all of this very very good. Full frame interchangeable lens systems (good ones) do it great at more specific focal lengths engineered into those specific lenses, while delivering more light, with larger sensor gathering more light. 1” sensor is the trade off to get 24-600mm bliss in one camera, one lens , with pretty amazing results, with some compromises.
I just have buy the dsc10-rx4 and i need more time what i can do, but i am in love with this picture shooter. You have made extreamly good pictures, thanks to show them. Greatings from Peter V. In the Netherlands. 🇳🇱
Enjoyed the comparison. Couldn’t believe you only had 815 subs. I subbed. Love my a9 and a7R4.. I bet that 400 in crop mode on the R4 would be superb. Wish Sony Pro Support would let us borrow the 400 2.8 but I totally understand. Cheers!
Thank you Johnson City. I know how does a guy get some sub love around here. If I was 24 I would have 100K in the first week :-) Thank you for subscribing. Maybe you can play with one at a Sony live event sometime.
I wonder if you have the firmware 2.0, which adds eye detection for animals. I love my RX10M4 which I bought for filming robotics at 1000fps, works great. But I've also had a great time filming like an amateur. My wife and I were watching some national geographic videos on photography, where the kind of gear is diminished as compared to framing and lighting. The RX10M4 has made easy work in a variety of situations. My only fear is that they will release am RX10M5.
Hey Dennis, Well that's a given but sometimes we don't need the latest gear, we just need to make the best out of the gear we have. If you have the iv and the V comes out wait for the VI Unless they put a bigger sensor in that camera the IV is amazing on it's own.
With the use of a power brick I have turned my RX10 MIV into a great video camera. I'm putting out from 1 to almost 3 hours in a single shoot. With the upgrade of this camera my videos are taking about 5000 times more view than last year.
How good is the RX10 at taking captures of jets flying at 34,000ft ? It'sa serious question .. As i take captures of jets flying overhead .,, when the sky is clear .. and oppertunity presents itself .. My current camera is a Sony DSCHX350 though it's poor at Sunset captures .
Had the RX10mk4 for two years now, keep telling myself I need to go full frame but cannot because this camera is so good and so versatile in every situation except in low light conditions. Carnt wait to see how they improve it with the mk 5.
The Rx10 mk2 had a 200mm 2.8. find it a shame that the mk 4 replaced that amazing lens when a longer but slower one. Guess the pressure from the Lumix fz1000 enticed them to do it.
I own the RX10 M4 ....it’s a good camera...could you please show also the focus type u use during the air show? And is steadyshot on or off? Kind regards, Henk
Great video. I'm one of the people that will never be able to afford 16,000 dollars of camera gear. I like bird and wildlife and landscape photography but it's just a hobby for me. Right now I have a small sensor super zoom. (Nikon B700) and I've been beating myself up trying to make up my mind when I upgrade (to around a $2000 limit) what would be the best thing to go for. Something like the RX 10? Or an entry or enthusiast level DSLR or mirrorless with a relatively inexpensive long or zoom lens? Been going back and forth quite a while now on this. The RX10 mk iv is a very appealing choice for me as I'm hesitant about getting into interchangeable lens cameras. As you inferred, it's an all in one package. This video gave me a lot of insight and information. Thanks very much!
All good comments to an excellent comparison review. I’m just 70 and have some physical issues that limit mobility and, particularly, stamina. I could carry my Nikon FX and the Nikon pro lenses, but its a lot of weight - I think about hiring a Sherpa at times. Even the Nikon FX with the Nikon 24-70 is a ton of heavy. Add in the so-so Nikon 70-300 and I have a 24-300 range but … I am carrying all of that. If I know I am sitting still, I can bring the RRS tripod which is fantastic, but that’s also knowing what you are shooting. And when you are shooting. When I saw that the RX 10 IV was able to shoot in RAW, I was intrigued, since (like a lot of people) I do most of my post in Lightroom. That is, unlike many smaller cameras, you are not stuck with a compressed JPEG format only, and can ‘fix’ some parts of an otherwise well composed shot. For travel, the relative lightness and the crazy zoom reach and the RAW make this a winner. Unless you have a Sherpa and $30,000 to burn.
Great presentation. I have the rx 10 IV. But I'd really like to know what strap/rig you use, since it must be comfortable since you seem to always carry the camera
I would venture to add the best lens you have is the one that hasn't been stolen from you. With the RX10 you have all your lenses with you all the time.
+absolu222 yeah, it’s hard to say when the V will out. However wait or not you will love the camera. You can always rent first as well if you want to try it out.
I need a camera with a 600mm range, but I've only recently found out about the Sony Rx M4 camera! In your opinion should I get the Sony Rxm4 or the Sigma 150-600? Use is to make funny youtube videos with hidden camera. Quality and Bokeh are essential.... So which one should I choose?
You can't go wrong with this camera (Rx10 IV) What's the smallest aperture on the Sigma? On the Rx10 IV f/4.0, all the way up tp 600mm The 4k video in the RX10IV looks amazing too in my opinion.
If a professional rx10 model was made it would have a G master series 24mm f1.8 to 600mm f4.0 version multi zoom lense on it ....that camera would cost probably 10000$...and would most likely be the choice of many a photo enthusiast....but that camera would put the Sony lense makers out of business.
Coming from the Panasonic Lumix FZ1000, I can really appreciate the RX10iv that does everything my FZ1000 can do, only slightly better. Better zoom, better autofocusing, maybe, not sure, a better sensor. But, a big let down is that it doesn't have time- capability. My FZ1000 is unreliable anymore, and I am really thinking about the RX10iv (since mark 5 is nowhere to be seen) to replace it. Especially that you can get good condition 2nd hand for a lot cheaper. Even sub $1000.
I agree! I would have thought we would have seen a new version by now. I am sure 2020 and 2021 have affected the production of these models. Pick Up used RX10IV and get out there and shoot
@@ThePixelShowYT Would you choose the RX10iv over an A6400 though? Coming from the Panasonic FZ1000, the RX10 would be a small improvement, but probably won't be the step forward in my photography I'm looking for (or please correct me if I am wrong...)
What do you think about getting this camera today? It's pretty old by now, but coming from the a6000 I find it just impossible to carry around my lenses and everything while being a parent to a 4 month old baby.
Out of all Sony cameras that can do wireless live-view, how do I get the live-view on the viewfinder? No problem getting that limited wireless live-view onto my pc. Second question, why don't Sony pays ATG royalty so flash can have ATG AF assist beam, ATG Auto2 mode and HSS when head bounced?
I’m hoping & waiting to see if there will be a RX10V with the features in the RX100VII, continual EyeAF & animal Eye AF! Maybe 2.8 through the range? I’d get it today!
Thank You for the OUTSTANDING Comparison ... i possess the Sony A9 but was aiming as a Back Up Camera for the Sony RX10 IV and now keeping hope for the Sony RX10 V to come out ... do you think it will be release soon ? please
Your videos are great, thank you for the work you put for us. I have a question! Please, can you charge the battery being inside the camera through USB conection? Or, do you have to charge the battery using a charger outside the camera? Please let me know, thank you and greetings from Germany, Alfredo
Yes, you can charge the battery using a USB micro cable from the camera to a wall plug or a portable charger. Make sure you use the correct wall plug adaptor.
Hopefully, the Release of the RX10 Mk 5 will have the same fully articulating screen and EVF as the New A7 S3 and, better low light capabilities, better battery life, fully functional & programmable touch screen, better color separation/depth, 4K @ 60 & 120, USB C - 3.2, battery grip option, and image stabilization for 4K video.
I have no inside info, however that is something Sony would do. The last upgrade between the 3-4 they added the same focusing technology from the Sony A9
I have heard only good things about the RX10 and have finally made the purchase at a sale price of £1199. For the photography I do I couldnt justify (or afford) £16000 . Hopefully money well spent!
Well to photograph a wedding, I may be a little reluctant to use the Rx10 IV to photograph the entire wedding, however for some select shots, especially being able to zoom in 600mm could lead to some interesting images. You may use the Rx10 IV to zoom in during the ceremony to capture a few images that otherwise may not be possible. I would play with it at your wedding and see what you come up with. Please share if you do.
@@ThePixelShowYT that thing takes crazy beautiful shots. I was asking cause it could see right through the cockpit windows without glare. Awesome stuff thank you.
I own one and where it is not so good is macro and long exposures - but both of these scenarios can be mitigated with screw on lens rings filters, far lighter than carrying extra lenses
Nicely done comparison. I've been tempted by the RX10 Mk4 but I wish it had a fully articulated screen like many of the Panasonic cameras. I don't vlog but I find the fully articulated screen more useful and can be turned around so it's less likely to be scratched by other gear or tangle with my belt buckle. Maybe in the Mark V.
I'm very curious about the RX10 Mark 4 but, at the same time, impressed with the results I've been able to get with the FZ 1000 (I have the Leica 114 version). Leica service has been outstanding. Besides the full-articulated LED screen are there any other features you miss? Do you feel like you get better image quality from the Sony? I'm always curious about how people like the gear they're using.
I really like the a9 but with the a9ii coming out soon I will wait for the first generation discount. The a9 is amazing and the RX10IV is a great mini brother, the RX10IV is in my future as well. Right now I have the a7iii and love that camera. Thanks Robert for your videos.
+Sam Bartaluzzi SONY makes some great cameras. There is usually one that works best for everyone’s photography’s needs Thanks for watching Sam. I appreciate you
shaolin95 As a Sony Artisan who shoots sports I will get and shoot the A9II as I am excited about the new technology in this new camera and so I can help others who have questions.
@@ThePixelShowYT Okay, I'll check out RX0m4 thanks, Rob. I have another camera question. SELP-18200 (for APS-C sensor) with a7rm2 great for video but what am I loosing out when it comes to still shots? I know it uses less sensor but it's still ok right?
I just bought one of these after giving up on the Mk5. I was expected decent image quality but I was still surprised how good it is. I will likely keep another camera for lower light situations but I can see myself using this 90% of the time.
Thanks. Reviews can be confusing when you watch a number of them. But yours was very helpful because it didn’t get into the minutiae that is so common and makes my eyes glaze over (never been a tech guy). I’m getting this camera because I don’t want to drag a lot of equipment around which takes all the fun out of it for me (and I’m not a young guy). I get great stuff from my iPhone 12 Pro Max but still want a camera to compliment that.
I've been considering getting this camera and am now on the fence about dumping my a7III. I just unloaded my a6000 which I am thinking with expensive glass would shoot on par with the RX10 4. I'm now thinking perhaps this could mostly replace my a7III and array of glass. Granted I'd loose low light performance due to the image sensor but portability and reach with the 600mm would far outweigh the negatives. I just came back from a camping trip and brought a ton of gear only to use hardly any of it due to portability. I'd hate to sell it all but this RX10 looks amazing. Maybe I'll just dump a few lenses and keep the a7III for portrait work. Hmmm. Thanks for the review. If you happen to have a lower end 7 series camera I'd love to see a comparison?? Very few are shooting with $13,000 setups but many are with $2,000 setups.
If you are ok with the smaller sensor Carl, you will love the Rx10 IV. Plus, it come with a camera bag full of lenses all wrapped into the one 24mm-600mm if you know what I mean.
I do not consider myself a pro-photographer. I have done few weddings and sold several photos of pets and sports. But the main thing I discovered many years ago is not necessary that your photography is the best in the world, but it is being able to market what you have. I owned a RX10-IV, sold it and bought the ar7iv with $K of GM lens. This is a great camera and the lens are amazing. But it becomes a job not only to carry your gear but changing the lens back and forth. Nevertheless, I sold my new ar7-iv and lens at a financial lost and ought another RX10-IV. This is the best camera for me. Even all the way to 600 mm it stays clear with very little noise. When compared with other brands of bridge cameras the Sony is heads and shoulders above them in quality. Some brands have more zoom but long before they reach their max they become so distorted the pictures are useless.
@@jerryinman3044 thanks for sharing your experience. I have since decided to sell a bit of gear to justify the purchase all the while keeping my a7III. The end of the day a used unit costs about as much as my 70-300 lens... If I land some work post Covid-19 I'll possible keep it all. If not maybe whittle down to bare bones. Gear shopping can become a bit of an obsession fulfilling wants rather than needs.. I have so much equipment that just sits im ashamed to admit.
It doesn’t work that way. If Sony makes a bigger sensor for rx10, then the lens will have to be way bigger too. A 600mm f4 lense on an apsc sensor will be 2 feet long. The cost will also be 5x.
Hi, great video, i have had the RX10 4 for two years and it is absolutly fast and so easy to carry especilly if you go hiking, the touch screen works also great, i could jump to A9 plus 200mm 600 mm sony lens and when you compare the price difference and quality ( A9 pictures quality look a little better) it makes you doubt whether to spend so much money on the A9... i would rather spend the money travelling around.. Regards from Argentina
completely misleading. first, it is completely unfair comparison, there exist Sony FE 200-600mm 5.6-6.3 and FE 100-400 4.5-5.6, to say nothing about new Sigma 100-400 5-6.3 which will all give you a much better quality than RX10, also with some (albeit not as extensive) zoom capabilities, but without the exorbitant price of 400 mm GM. Actually, you can get Sigma 100-400 with Sony a6400 camera combo fpor about the same amount of money as RX10 m5. Then, it is not mentioned what difference the sensor size makes when the light is not perfect, and also that f4 on RX10 is actually equivalent to f11 on full-frame camera. Ths is just an advertisement for RX10 (which is an excellent camera, but has its limitations) and the airshow, no useful information there ))
Nothing is misleading.....and thank you captain obvious, there are actually other choices in lenses, but this RU-vid was on these 2 setups. Everything else you state was either clearly covered by this video or something a caveman photographer already knows, like 1” sensor vs full frame sensor differences. The point of this video was clearly lost on you due to lack of basic comprehension.
El problema es el tamaño reducido del sensor. Sí por lo menos tuviera un micro 4/3 o A-psc no dudaría en comprarlo. Ahí es donde está el problema, Un saludo
This really needed to be a 4K video. Even if you were still cutting in 1080p 3 years ago, you needed to upscale this to 4K before uploading to RU-vid. Because this website absolutely murderes photo quality when it transcodes 1080p video. It's impossible to compare any of the photos like this.
I’m thinking about this camera but holding out for the V if it has Eye AF like the RX100. Lugging around lenses & a tripod & a small flash is so heavy. It’s getting too much and this sounds like the right camera, if they can put the upgrades in it!
+ahmad vlogs I am excited to see the new features in the next version myself, however I’m not sure when that will be. That’s always the dilemma right? You can always sell the 4 and get some money back once the 5 comes out.
@@ThePixelShowYT agree, I'm very inclined to get one, I have p1000 already but I miss that quality in stills, p1000 stabilization is amazing and it takes great 4k video in addition to the 3000mm lens however no slo mo, auto focus is slow and no buffer for continuous shooting, add to that the tiny sensor which doesn't deliver much in dynamic range or low light, so
