I have seen and held a 1943 copper Penney. But it wasn’t mine to keep. It belonged to a friend in High School and his family. It was brought in to have our chemistry teacher verify that it was really made from copper. At that time it was believed that only 6 such coins existed. The sale of it put all of the kids in that family through College. The story was that the youngest son got it as part of a payment for the news papers he delivered. Someone thought its value was only one cent!

Hi JD, I don't know the first thing about coin collecting, but found your video very interesting. However, I'd like to make a comment on your terminology. It would be more correct to say the steel coins are ATTRACTED to the magnet, rather than "sticking to the magnet." I know it's nit-picking, but the proper use of language is important.

Well, my friend, you responded to me with two words, each consisting of only one syllable. I thank you for helping make my point about our disappearing language. The fact you've watched this video tells me you're a person of intelligence. Let me tell you about George Orwell's terrifying novel "1984," which exemplifies the importance of language. The story is about a people enslave by their government. They keep people from conspiring against them by making communication difficult. They do this by decreasing the number of words in their vocabulary. For example, take the words "good" and "bad," in their vocabulary called "newspeak" the word "bad" would disappear and be replaced by the word "ungood," thus removing a word. This would continue until the most minimum of words was left. The lesson is, "don't let our language die by excusing its misuse, add to your vocabulary every day."

Coin dealer/shop owner and wheat cent collector here...Been doing it for 60+ years. There were VERY very few 1943 copper planchets which got to the penny dies in 1943. Most if not all have been accounted for. Over the decades I have only seen and handled one such cent, and that was in 1958. It sold at auction in 1964 for $122,000 USD due to it's AU (almost uncirculated) condition. Back then, almost all of these rare genuine cents had already been accounted for, but the best guess was that there were (in 1964) if any, one or two circulating on the planet. An old Navy buddy came into my shop in the '70's and CLAIMED to have 3 of them. Well, I called B.S. on him, BUT...they passed my magnet test and I started thinking something is really fishy here, 3 of the rarest cents on Earth and my old buddy has 3 of them, a P, a D, and an S. He wanted to sell them to me, as all the matchbook covers back then had the 'Million-Dollar-Penny' advertisement "Do you have one of THESE 1943 pennies?" With his permission, under 40X magnification we scraped the obverse and reverse sides which revealed they had been copper-plated, and were in fact, ordinary steel cents with a thin zinc coating value, 3c to 5c each. The real and honest chances of finding a genuine 1943 (P, D, or S mint) as of 2019 is approximately ONE in 6 quadrillion. Any real numismatist would bet any lifetime collection of gold that you are NOT going to find one of these cents anywhere today. Also, from the late 1940's, a lot of State Fair Operators and novelty shops were selling and handing these out as souvenirs to tourists as a joke gift item. It is sad that some ignorant/innocently naive people believed this nonsense, thinking they had suddenly become wealthy. There was a New York News story of a widow's suicide after learning that her "valuable" 1943-D COPPER WHEAT CENT she had held onto for decades was a plated fake. Sad but true. So, Don't waste your time. Collect some coins, have some fun, and don't fall for a counterfeit cent. GL and HH to all - John J. Smythe, Numismatist

When I was a kid collecting coins the biggies were the 1909 SVDB penny & the 1943 copper ~ I was always told that there were only 5 of these 1943 coppers ever stuck but this video probably is more correct in that all 3 mints had struck a few by mistake...
@smb123211
@smb123211 5 лет назад
As a longtime professional coin collector let me make a few corrections. (1) No coin should EVER be cleaned with more than soapy water. (2) The two factors that determine cost are rarity and condition. Most collectors think this sale is looney (one had sold the year before for $85,000 - 1/20th the cost). But this one was unique - it had been certified by professionals (PCGS), it was graded MS63 and classified as "Bright Red", an incredible rarity. Nothing in your pocket will be a high grade due to the scuff marks, wear and tear and lack of luster. Example: The famous 1909-S VDB Lincoln cent can go for $5,000 (brown), $7200 (Brown with some red) or $13,500 (bright red).

I am not sure where I got my love of coins but I love collecting them. My husband and I throw all our change in a basket. When the basket is full I go through it and get all the coins out I want to keep, the rest I roll and save for something we want. I have purchased an e-reader, a puppy, we’ve used it towards trips etc. I’ve done this most of my life with no prompting from anyone. I simply love collecting coins. My sister works for Dollar General and keeps her eyes peeled for coins, 2 dollar bills etc.

About 15 years ago I managed an apartment building. There was an old 1960's Coke machine in the laundry room dispensing for 50 cents a can. I kept it stocked and noticed the silver quarters coming in a few at a time. So I taped a $1 bill on every 9th can with a note saying ''You Won!''. Holy smokes, the machine was empty every 3 days. The real silver quarters were pouring in. I never found out who was raiding somebody's stash of real silver quarters but it was enough to fill up a one liter container in a few months.

I work as a clerk so we go through a bunch of change. I don't look at every coin but I usually look for coloration as the first sign of age. Another fun one is when people pay with Kennedy half dollars, I look at the date and realize I'm holding solid silver because it's 1964. arthur, if ur interested in old coins and not wanting to spend a fortune to own them. my suggestion is to check ur pocket change daily, ive found silver coins, old wheat pennies with value, even .50 cents or $3 or $4 bucks for a penny adds up over a lifetime., And u can actually buy old coinage from Roman times and older for $100 bucks or less. Do some research and don't buy until you've found what u like and the same coin is sold from different retailers for a similiar price., Good Hunting & Happy Collecting

I have watched those zinc pennies get left on the ground, nobody could be bothered to pick them up. I would walk my dog past the same spot daily. And in less than 6 months they were almost unrecognizable as a coin not even round. I live in NC and we get a lot of rain. AZ might be different.

My Grandma gave me a mayonnaise jar filled with Indian head pennies when I was around 10 years old. I regret to say that they were spent on bubble gum baseball cards and comic books! A lot were from Civil War years including a fatter one that resembled bronze! I'm sure there were steel pennies in the mix. Probably copper 1943 as well. Thanks for the memories!

The million dollar pennies from 1943 were actually the result of a small minting error that ended up with pennies being made from copper when they were supposed to be made from steel. It was recognized insanely fast, which is why there's literally only twenty 1943 copper S pennies.

@daveidmarx8296 5 лет назад
Yeah, those pennies are worth like 4 cents each now! You'da been rich! Seriously, common date wheat pennies (not "weat pennys") are barely worth a premium over their copper value these days. A pre-1982 penny is worth about three cents in copper, meanwhile you can buy a bag of 5,000 what pennies right now on ebay for $203.49 (with free shipping!) That's just over four cents per penny. No need to cry over THAT.

My Dad had a vending machine route of pinballs, jukeboxes, pool tables, and slot type machines. I went with him from 1950 to 2000 and would through hundreds of dollars of change weekly. The rarest coin I found had a mint run of 900,000 a mercury dime. We did find 10 half dimes in a jukebox. I noticed we would find more rare coins when the economy dropped. People were spending them to eat and we had a small Mom & Pop store he owned got over 50 silver dollars one year and none were real rare. When they took the silver coins out of circulation in 1965 in a few years it was no longer worth it to go through all the change.

JD's Variety Channel I know what you mean,once you find an old coin,you naturally want to get into the history and then you naturally want to start buying the collector coins.I am up to my ears in different coins now. I have to admit though,my dad used to have an old steel bank in the shape of a bear that had old coins,he held my fascination with those coins. When I got into metal detecting back in the 1980's, technology was just starting to surpass the older detectors,allowing for better detecting,better discrimination and better depth.

J D Its best to take it to an actual coin shop if you have any questions reguarding coins. The guys there are always dealing with coins so they know their stuff. I got to know the guys at my local coin shop and that has saved me money in the long run. I save all my receipts as well as leave the price I paid on the pocket of the coin I purchase. I showed my friends at the coin shop some 90's pennys that looked smaller and had no copper ,turned out they were paunclets from another countrys coins stamped with the us penny die. They are worth money,simply because the US mint isnt supposed to make mistakes. When they do,they usually catch them. Thats why those coins are so collectable.

You should have mentioned the extremely rare 1944 cents that were, during the switch-over, mistakenly stamped from steel blanks. Only a tiny handful have been accounted for. One collector with more money that anybody I know owns both a '43 copper cent AND a '44 steel-zinc cent. BTW: Many '44 cents were stamped on blanks made from wartime-recovered bronze rather than copper.
