Big Yellowfin Tuna Captured on a tiny lure while in a Fishing Tournament on the Island of Oahu, Hawaii. Spinners Ahi Shootout is held on the beautiful west shores of Waianae Hi. Its known to be the bigger of all Tournaments that Targets specifically the Yellowfin Tuna.
Here in Hawaii we call the Yellowfin Tuna (Ahi) 100lbs and above.
As for any size thats 99lbs and below... Their called (Shibi)
Just so we can quickly distinct approximate size caught.
We caught this Tuna on a 5" Flying Fish Niiyama Lure. It was the smallest lure we had in our pattern. The lure was set out just minutes earlier as we saw a bunch of Aku (Striped Bonito) breaking surface in that area. Aku as we call them, is definitely a local treat. Most locals prefer the flavor of the dark red meat over the flavor of the Yellowfin Tuna. I personally agree as well. Little did we know, we would be battling a huge Yellowfin Tuna on our lighter gear setup. My gear consisted of a Shimano 50w Tiagra on a custom 50 class rod. Loaded with 100lb Power Pro Braided line and 50ft of 100lb Seaguar Fluorocarbon leader. This typically is my set up for smaller game fish. Lure is a 5" Black Purple Flying Fish Head made by Niiyama Lures. Thats the first words that came to mind that day. "Elephants Eats Peanuts" We would normally get our bites on our 9" and 7" lures but that particular day that wasnt the case for me. Out of 150 Boats that entered that day, i'd like to safely say only 21 Yellowfins Over !00 had been Caught. I feel blessed to say that we got Lucky. The winner was a 154.60lb Ahi caught by team #112 on the FV KalihiWai / Capt Jim Hull n Son. Also on that Team was a good friend of mine named James Shade. He ironically was supposed to be on my boat that day! Last minute changes happened days before that tournament. Big Ups to Team 112. Well deserved.
We enjoy entering these fun Fishing Tournaments. Unfortunately... it aint happening this year due to this crazy (Covid19) Virus. I hope and pray for the world to heal as fast as it all started. Be safe and stay healthy everyone. Thanks again for taking the time to watch my fun fishing Adventures. Aloha everyone!!!
For the records. You dont need to (ALWAYS) put out all big lures to catch bigger fish. Say their eating sardines. And sardines are approximately 5". Why would you put out something thats 9-12"?. Make sense? Most times I'll put out a bigger 9" lure while targeting most bigger fishes. But always try to keep one small 5' lure in your paternities to say the lease. If you come across smaller fish like say Striped Bonito (Aku). They more than likely wouldn't take a stab at a 9" lure with 300lb test leader. Although if you had one 5" lure out at that time. you'll increase your odds to getting a bite and having to come home with something to eat. Then at the same time... if the fish you are targeting is eating smaller bait fish. Then your odds has further increased for the bigger fishes as well as anything big or small too tug on that line. That day I put out a couple smaller lures just minutes before I got those hits. There was some smaller Bonito feeding within that same area. I was just trying to get me something for dinner just in case I come home empty handed. I been working the area with all Bigger 9" Lures and not a tap. Soon as I replaced the lures with 5" little ones. Boom! I had a bite. Came off. kept working that same area and minutes later... we finally got one to stick..And it so happen to be that Yellowfin Tuna we Caught on this tournament. Moral of the story is to always put out at least 1 smaller lure to increase your odds to getting that bite. Who knows what their feeding on. increase your odds guys. "Elephants Eat Peanuts"

phasespace Thanks for the tips buddy. I’m new to this RU-vid stuff. I’m trying to take it step by step and just sharing fun times. It was surely about just the adventure. How to:, Tips and all that fun stuff will surely come soon. Just trying to learn how to put these videos together. I’ve been computer illiterate all my life, so just completing just a Video was really a big accomplishment for me. It’s all self taught through RU-vid videos so I’ll try to get there. I really appreciate your input tho. I will definitely work on that really soon. Hopefully I get better with this editing part first. I appreciate your help buddy. Have a great day. Aloha
