$10,000 Pyramid (VT-11/15/73) (Pat Carroll-Tony Randall)

A rare episode of the original CBS $10,000 Pyramid from 1973! This episode I would note comes from a screening on an old video podcast (NICKINATL; thank you Vahan for the refresher as I had forgotten) where it was shown in the corner while occasionally there were background comments from the podcast host. I managed to crop the video so we see just the program itself (but for a tiny sliver in the bottom right). The extraneous comments are from the original podcast.

CBS was so stupid in canceling this show when the ratings took a temporary dip because of preemptions for Watergate hearings coverage. When ABC picked it up, the show just didn’t have the same feel to it. The set was changed somewhat, the sound effects were a bit different and it just wasn’t as good as the CBS production.
@VahanNisanian
@VahanNisanian 6 месяцев назад
CBS had union rules in which they didn't allow a rival network to use their sets. That's why a newer and smaller set was built. The first six weeks of the ABC run continued to tape at The Ed Sullivan Theater, and then they moved to Elysee.

Wow! A great find!! It’s interesting to see how Dick’s command of the pacing of the show was still developing and not as perfectly smooth as on ABC. I just went to see Stephen Colbert two months ago and all I kept trying to visualize was the Pyramid on that stage, which was difficult to do since I’m sure the place looks nothing like it did in 1973 😂

At long last! An classic Pyramid episode that was *not* taped at CBS Television City in the Hollywood District of L.A., but at the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City’s Theater District. And it’s great to hear the late Bob Clayton’s voice and not Jack Clark’s.

Even when he started that, he didn't do it every episode. I remember many 80s episodes where he either didn't leave, or he left and came back to chat with the contestants/celebs. I don't know why he did it, but I think a rumor I once read was he did it because of all the different shows he was hosting/producing at the time. He had to hustle to another studio to do another show.

The association of aspirin with Reye Syndrome in children wasn't known (or at least well known) before the 1980s, so it was very common to have commercials for children's aspirin prior to the 1980s. Looking back, it might be a little odd for some to see a children's aspirin commercial.
