Tugboats and dredgers have so far failed to free a the cargo ship 'Ever Given' wedged in the Suez Canal. The situation is creating a traffic jam with approximately 200 vessels waiting on both sides of the canal.
In addition to oil, consumer goods such as clothing, furniture and auto parts are transported across the channel. Richard Medae of Lloyd's List wrote on Twitter that westbound traffic was estimated to be worth about $5.1 billion (€4.3 billion) a day. Eastbound traffic is worth some $4.5 billion. This means that about $10 billion worth of goods are now blocked.

As a master myself, I cant agree entirely with the interviewee. Ships getting larger is not the driver of the number of crew. Its the role of the vessel that drive the crew numbers. Larger cargo ships just have more hold space and/or deck space. You dont need more engineers, bridge watchkeepers or deckhands just because you have more cargo. His statement that legislation has not added more safety equipment is simply untrue - AIS, VDR, ECDIS, SMS and ISM have all been mandated in the last 20 years. I agree that as vessels have got larger the tugs and other support items need to get bigger too and so does the skills required to handle everything. The only crew member added has been an ETO (for comms, nav and computer equipement).

Why not remove the container cargo. If the ship has run aground, it is stuck as it is too heavy and carrying too much weight. They need to reduce the weight and take off some or part of the cargo,. like the captain Conrad said. The ship is to big and too heavy and does not have a big enough crew to run it..

If they had two smaller ships to each take half the cargo, this wouldn't have happened. @@hokeypokeypots I bought my laptop in 2013. It died a few weeks ago. Five years is the expected life of any computer if you want to be data safe and use the latest software, but you can push it longer with minor hardware upgrades as I did. My cell phone died in November - it was 8 or 9 years old. I have a high-end desktop used daily that is still limping along at 10 years of age (its sound stopped working a year ago and one of two hard drives in it failed two years ago). My vehicle is 2010 and it is mostly fine except for some electric things that stopped working (e.g. electric mirror adjustors, using my third battery). Refrigerator, electric stove and dish washer were all replaced at 20 years of age two years ago. Clothes washer, dryer, furnace and A/C are all 22 years old, might need to be, should really be, replaced soon. Nothing lasts forever, even me.

I do not have any knowledge of how to dislodge the Evergreen Container Ship. However, I'd like to share my little idea with everyone here. Except several ways to dislodge the ship, when people try to unload the containers on the ship, can the people first unload partial of the containers on the front of the ship, which might cause the head (front) of the ship up? Meantime we can start the ship's engine and drive the ship back and let the front of the ship leave the canal's bank. But be careful to prevent the containers on the rear of the ship drop/move back to the Suez Canel. Also, to prevent the tail of the ship from closing to the other side of the bank. We may use another ship to pull the Evergreen back to the middle of the canal. Thanks a lot to share my idea!

This "accident" never should have happened. The shipping industry and the Canal authorities are clearly to blame. They had to be aware of the danger to large "sail" container ships from being caught in the wind. The shippers and the Egyptian Canal authorities were not strong enough to impose restrictions on the vessels entering the canal. The multinationals have the muscle to oppose restrictions. The only surprise is that this did not happen earlier.
