Always remember to unplug the battery first before you touch anything and drain the power by holding the power button after. I fried one of the capacitor for the backlight just because I didn't drain the power out of the logic board :( Great video By the way!

I did something similar to this at work, I took three 11 inch 2014 MacBook airs and Frankensteined them together to make a working one. Lot of time spent on it, but it was worth it.

If you don’t mind, I want to give a video idea: since you said the parts of the MacBook Air are interchangeable from 2013 up to 2017, and they’re not so expensive anymore, it would be cool to see a video: “build your own Macbook Air”, in which you select a better logic board, and find the other parts from different years to make, or a cheaper laptop, or a better value one.

You’ve inspired me to begin upgrading my “new to me” mid 2012 MacBook Pro. SSD, 16 gigs of ram. I’m a Thinkpad guy, but going to give this a shot!

2:11 only thing I’m thinking about is how come on the older models the fan actually actively cooled the cpu but the newer models dont💀

I have the same model but upgraded to i7 and 8GB of RAM. One of the things that bugged me at first was the blandness of the colors of the LCD, especially on the LG panels. You can easily Google that and find very good color profiles for recalibrating it to more saturated and vivid profiles for higher range Samsung panels. It's very good now, I don't mind the lower resolution anymore.

I still use my 2012 MacBook Air. I haven't upgraded it since then, and it still does its job, like typing in stuff and web browsing. There's something about the keyboard I just really like.

@Luke Miani, there has never been a 16 GB RAM non-retina MacBook Air, only up to 8GB: everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup/?search_keywords=MacBookAir7,2. Additionally, there is a big difference in the 2017 model, which is full speed NVME SSDs (pci-x 4x interface instead of SATA), going up to 1GB/s writes, and 1.4 GB/s reads. And that makes a huge difference in terms of responsiveness vs pre-2017 models. Though the display still sucks as you pointed out in many videos. Considering the displays, yes are i.e. the same for many years in terms of the panel, but some connector cables length changes depending on which model year is coming from. Something to remember, as I've learned it "the hard way" when one of the connectors cables was too short. Take care!

Great video! You should recommend viewers to use an antistatic pad and a wrist loop! Folks are going to attempt to do this in carpeted room where high amounts of static electricity can easily build up.

I have the same model : 2013, 4Gb, 128Gb. It is great for university because I have an all day battery life and it is lighter to carry compared to the unibody 2011 that I had before. And with the SSD it is so fast

I think that it is amazing that the macbook ait and some other laptops just cram stuff into every available space. My laptop has quite a lot of empty space in it, and doesn't use it for anything. every manufacturer should do what the macbook air does, put all the essential in the top half of the computer, and fill the bottom with a battery, giving the computer great battery life.

picked up a mid 2014 for $13 that had a bent topcase, bent it back and had a perfectly useable mid 2014 macbook air, working battery, good screen, keyboard and trackpad, for only $13

My 2020 MacBook Air with the i7 only gets 1000 in Cinebench. Guess that fan being not connected to the heat sink is hurting real hard

I got myself a 2011 iMac for 50 bucks off eBay, it was used in a school and the graphics card lifespan is very long since it wasn’t like really used in a way. I’m looking to upgrade soon though, cause I’m living off a 2016 Retina MacBook and the 2011 iMac.

Ha, I just fixed exactly the same one for my daughter, also a 2013, i5 unfortunately 4Gb. The seller told me it would not start and there was "something" wrong with the screen. I had another one I bought a while back with a good screen and deck. So what did I pay? CAD $100 for the MacBook and CAD $120 for the second one with the good screen. The face of my daughter getting a new to her laptop: priceless. Plus I have a 250Gb sad drive, a good deck (incl. keyboard and trackpad), a good battery and an I/O board.

Hi Luke! First off I want to tell you how instructive and interesting your tutorials have been! In particular this tutorial is exactly what I'm wanting to learn more about. Where does one go to find such a used apple laptop? What source do you use when searching for replacement parts? ie.. Screen, front, back cover? Wow, I just won a bid on a B grade 2015, 13”, i7, 2,2, 251 ssd, 8gb ram on eBay, with just a few small nicks. It had an earlier version of Big Sur on it. This morning I upgraded it to Monterey. I paid....drumroll... € 258.... Nothing to repair.

I just replaced the blown speakers in my 2013 MBP using iFixit's guide, it was not that hard but I did have to buy some special screwdrivers. Nice repair you dad, well done.

Another thing to remember is that a 2012 A1465 LCD assembly will not work on a 2013 A1465 MacBook Air. The wifi cables are too short and wont reach the wifi card. The copnnections are all the same and look like they should mount up, but on the 2012 a1465, the wifi card is oriented differently.

Omg ... only 265$ for that beatuy. In Hungary we still pay 450-600$ for these macbooks as used. I would like to buy a 2015 13" retina and those cost 750-900$.

I repair lots of macbooks for my business too and the connections are the least of the worries. Biggest pain is losing screws or mismatching them and putting them in the wrong spot

I received a 2015 MacBook Air 13” base model from a family member for free. They took it to the Apple store and they said it needed a new keyboard and trackpad due to liquid damage. $4 cable off of eBay fixed it! No liquid damage!

Yea, you should connect the connectors before screwing in the screws. Otherwise, you might get screwed, if you screw up somewhere.

Following the spirit of your channel and being in quarantine in Spain, bored, I bought a used Macbook Air 2011 128gb (?). The computer started but freezed with a question mark, but it was cosmetically fine. I started connecting a usb disk with a copy of Time machine of my Macbook Pro, then with Disk Tools I formatted the SSD that turned out to be 500GB !, I installed operating system and migrated the data. It worked like a charm. It was very easy but too fast ... now again bored. :-)

Hi Luke, the question I have is related to my old Macbook Air 2G RAM late 2010. There is a logic board for this machine with 4GB. It can be bought for ~ 180 $, so not big deal at all but as this is my first Mac and I just like it a lot. Does it make sens to change the logic board ? The 2 GB is just too far to less but having 4GB will improve the speed in tangible way ?

i got a working macbook air for $100, sure the battery didnt work when he said the computer did work and for some reason the display rubber was so weak i somehow broke it with the charger but still even with the new parts that are needed to turn it back into a laptop, its still very cheap (specs: i7 1.8ghz 4gb 1333mhz ram apple 256gb ssd, i think this was a really great deal)
