$127 Billion in Student Loan Debt BEING CANCELED!

After the the Biden loan forgiveness program was struck down earlier this year, it looked like there would be no more student loan forgiveness. But thats not the case. Through existing laws on the books they were able to find a way to still make sure a whopping $127 billion dollars in student loans still get forgiven, if you meet certain criteria. And guess what? We're all paying for it...whether you went to college or not.

At least this is all legal. These are mostly people who have been paying for at least 25 years. Little did they know that a law from 1965 said that after 25 years of paying; they could stop. I'm 100% against clearing all the debt but don't mind people who have been making monthly payments for 25 years having their debt wiped out.

That’s a big issue with tax money going to private businesses in the first place. It should never happen. Just like tax payers paying for professional sports stadiums. It’s a gross misuse of tax money. But then, the government never had the right to make businesses close either. The lockdown was a very bad idea, especially after the first 2 weeks once we knew what we were dealing with.

Well, what is missing here, is that the majority of student loan forgiveness going on right now are people who were swindled into high interest student loans at scam for profit diploma mills. The department of Ed isn't just randomly handing out loan forgiveness. They are following up on loan forgiveness for those who filed complaints years ago, and were ignored, or the department never had the resources to get to.

I borrowed 49k, worked as a teacher for 10 years, paid on loan for 10 years, and then PSLF paid off the loan. The underreported issue is that to be in the program you are required to be on the “Income Based Repayment Plan”. I paid for 10 years, the ending balance was 63k, 14k more than I borrowed! My payments didn’t even cover the 6% loan interest. Let’s say I quit the teaching job after 5 years, I would have owed more than I borrowed after paying for 5 years.

I had to pay for all my college classes and expenses myself. I worked all night in a grocery store to take care of my wife, children, and college expenses. My wife did not work. I wanted it that way. I tell you this because I am tougher and smarter than I would have been. When I got laid off at 47 no problem. I took a low unpleasant job with the FEDS, but I started taking another year's worth of college classes. The feds started giving me more dangerous and responsible jobs. I completed the classes. The US Government sent me to a University for advanced training. I graduated and started making some serious money. I could not have done this without the brutal experiences I had to suffer through. Ok, get everything for free. You think you will be smart enough to survive?

Exactly. That is what bothers me ( I too had to continually work, go back to school and paid for it, rinse, repeat, work for the government off and on). I paid for mine myself too. same way. parents offered to pay and I said no way. It was hard but what I learned was much more valuable than the education I got. They should disallow student loans or let them be included in bankruptcy because the banks and finance companies wont give them out. They would look at the risk and reward and do proper consideration. then the universities (businesses of education) would not be so entitled to get money from unsuspected citizens.

I had to work through college too, I had 3 jobs (including Loading trucks overnight at UPS), and still had had to pay off student loans when I graduated. I was fortunate I graduated with only $20,000 in student load debt, and had a good job working in IT to be able to pay it all off in just 3 or 4 years. But really I had no idea what I was really getting into when I was a student, I just knew signing the loan meant going to class that semester, not signing the loan meant having to drop out. So you sign the loan so you can go to class. I didn't even realize how much I actually would owe until I graduated and the bills started to come. We have to understand these young people are not as financially sophisticated as we might think they are. The Government by backing all these loans has given Colleges a license to charge whatever exorbitant fees they want knowing full well the Government will cover all of it. But it leaves the students holding the bag debt wise. I do think the Government has a major role in the student debt problem. We want students to graduate and be able to support themselves. Not come out of College hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt, you can't be a productive member of society if you are saddled with such debt that you can't even mitigate with bankruptcy. And who put that bankruptcy restriction in ? The government did. Loan forgiveness (which I agree with) is merely the first step. To stop this problem the Government has to put in some limits on how much loan amount they will back. That will force Colleges to keep their fees inline with what the government will back. Without that, this loan forgiveness is just a speed bump, they need to do it again in 10 years when the next group of students get saddled with large student loan debts.

It isn't irresponsible to have student loans. People who have student loans pay as much tax as anyone else, and would be able to pay their student loans off sooner if they didn't have to pay a huge chunk of their paychecks to taxes. Why don't working people who have student loans have a choice about where their tax money goes? Do you really think people who don't have student loans are paying all the taxes and bearing the burden of those who do? The way I see it, most tax money goes to the military, and the rest, a small amount, goes to towards helping society. If your gripe is about the waste of tax payer money and it not going towards worthwhile causes, you're barking up the wrong tree.
