Welcome to episode 10 of the Surgeon's fishing channel. In this episode, I will compare and contrast the famous New Zealand made Epic rod and reel to the world famous & cheap MaxCatch fibreglass rod & aluminum die-cast reel.
Epic rods are made in Wanaka, South Island of New Zealand. They are really expensive but probably one of the best brands in the world. MaxCatch range of products are cheap and affordable, you can see them everywhere. How do they match up?
The location shown in this video is in Dunedin, the Southern Reservoir is a small pond stocked with trouts and managed by Fish & Game New Zealand. Only spinning and fly fishing are allow here, and the limit catch (keep) is one fish per day per angler.

I have found that these maxcatch glass rods are better at lower wt. my steelhead rod is a 6wt s-glass has a similar feel to a 7wt graphite rod which is kind of unforgiving. I now own a maxcatch unic 5wt and all i can say is wow, this is a medium speed, full bend, well balanced rod....like a traditional glass rod of the past. if your not in love with the cheaper glass rods they offer, try the unic, it casts similarly to redington butterstick, echo bad ass glass or orvis superfine glass.

ha! i was doing so much research around the unic and there is barely anything out there. I wanted the 4 wt but in the end I ordered the 3 wt glass overlined with 4wt line because I just didn't trust the unic bend to be full or not. I asked customer service so many times but the communication barrier between languages got me no where. On the product page it says the unic is fast action and you say medium. Maybe I will get a unic later on thanks for the info.

When I started flyfishing in the early 1990s I bought the cheapest rod I could find since I didn't know if FF would be my thing. That caught a number of fish in spite of being a beast to cast. I graduated to low end rods by major manufacturers that were better casting rods but still not expensive. The only thing I don't like about the Maxcatch is the color since white rod may spook fish in some situations. Otherwise Maxcatch would serve someone on a budget very well. I think a lot of people get caught up in the fancy rod thing when money might be better spent on other necessities

Yeah completely agree with that. I’ve got no problems using it to catch fish. For starters I would recommend it for it, one of the cheapest setup in the market

Buying this exact set up because I love fishing but don’t really know if I’ll get into FF. I don’t even know how! 😂 but way I see it is if I like it and it becomes my new way of fishing. Just like regular fishing I’ll end up buying more expensive gear

Interesting video. I have a £200 fibreglass rod which is quite nice, its a decent quality Chinese made rod, fishes with a medium speed / action, not far behind my USA made £500 Orvis carbon rod if truth be told. How did you find the two reels? Was the 'Maxcatch' reel decent?

I think MaxCatch is a great rod for starting out. But will never be my favourite rod, the material used is too heavy. The reel is fine, nice and light. And it’s cheap

I also was curious, so i have the Maxcatch glass in a #3 . It casts so nice. So ordered the #6. They used to sell them for a #5 wieght . That was the weight I wanted. Also the #5 from M.C is a bit shorter than their #6. Anyway, I have see m cast with eas close as well as the complete flyline out! The 3 weight is also faster than the Epic but comes closer for comparison

There are easy ways to add weight to your Maxcatch reel to balance it perfectly with your Maxcatch rod.

I own many top brand fishing rods...........but I get great pleasure in out-fishing the guys with all the gear and no idea with a £30 complete kit from a cheap supermarket. Thats a reel a line and a rod for £30.......Expensive golf clubs don't make you a better golfer..and expensive rods/reels/lines wont catch you more fish.
