This violin works great if you are completely new to it like I was, after you get better at the instrument, then it's time to upgrade. It's far worth it!

Being retired with lots of idle time on my hands, I thought I would give the violin a try. There are hundreds of violins on the market priced in that "beginner" segment so it is confusing to say the least on what to buy. I know this is an older review (6 years ago) but Cecilio is still making this instrument and I can only assume they have honed their craft. After seeing the smile on your face after playing this violin and knowing you an accomplished violinist, I think you have helped me find my next purchase. Thank you for the honest review and your explanation of the "voice" of the instrument.

Thank you very much for this review - I have decided on purchasing this violin and your review is one of the reasons why. I am a beginner and didn't want to break the bank until I'm sure I will stick with it - I didn't want to buy total garbage either, so this seems the best! Very nice to have reviews done by someone who actually knows violins and actually plays - I found some reviews from people who freely admitted they knew nothing of violins!

Thank you for the wonderful review. After contemplating the CVN 100 and 300 for a couple weeks now, this review decided it for me. I plan to use it for a long time, so paying a little extra for the better quality is worth it. I just ordered the Cecilio CVN 300.

So, it's fairly common for new violins to slip out of tune, right? Did you have trouble keeping this one in tune? Mine is slipping out constantly and making it really hard to practice, and I am afraid if I keep having to tune it too much the strings might break. I don't know if they will be able to help me out in the music shop I got my rental from, and the luthiers here (there are only two with identifiable locations) are really far from me...plus if they tell me I need parts modified/replaced I may not be able to afford it. So, I'm going to see what I can do tomorrow, but in the meantime do you have any specific recommendations?
@TheOnlineViolinTutor
@TheOnlineViolinTutor 10 лет назад
Ashley Miller push the pegs in a little as you turn them and yes, you need to tune the violin each time you play it - thats the only thing with all stringed instruments. I might also buy some peg drops as it will help keep the violin in tune. A luthier wont tell you replace anything (or shouldn't do) as the violin is worth so little, it would counterproductive. Get peg drops and push them in as you tune and go from there. Replacing the factory strings it came with might help also as they are only the standard factory ones, so even if you spent a little amount like D'Addario Preludes, they would help as they are better quality - this in turn would also way improve the sound of the violin too, so its a double whammy!! :))
@averyvolk3022
@averyvolk3022 10 лет назад
It came with D'addario Preludes on it already though? hehe but I know what you mean. It's actually getting better at staying in tune though since yesterday. Thanks darling! 😄❤
@TheOnlineViolinTutor

Ashley Miller of course it does, sorry i forgot that is does! Well if you bought it very recently, then is will go hugely out of tune for a while before it settles, but thats violin life im afraid.

Alison I bought this violin on Amazon for $120 as a kit!! I couldn't believe what I got; a beautiful violin, a tuner, a case, two bows, rosin, shoulder rest and a beginner book!! An incredible value for any beginner. Its well set up, prelude strings and ready to play!!!

+Benny Davi Hello! Now that I am getting better at it, I am enjoying it more. For a while it sounded like nails on a chalkboard, but the lady in the videos said in another tutorial that you will probably sound terrible for a while. Sounding passable seems to be mostly technique and practice and not so much the violin itself. Also, for a cheaper violin, it seems to stay in tune for a long time. I am not fiddling with the tuning all that much. I had a chance to play with more intermediate violins a few weeks ago, and the flaws I noticed in my violin are: 1. The hair on the bow seems to be of a lesser quality. 2. This violin feels heavier than others. The other violins I tried all stayed up comfortably under my chin, while this one is heavy and wants to droop down. The included shoulder pad might work for you, but I am going to buy another style, like the everest shoulder rest. That one seems to work well with the violins I tried. Less droop.
@TheOnlineViolinTutor
@TheOnlineViolinTutor 8 лет назад
+Carlos Roots I totally agree, but it is one of the things that come with a cheap violin. Its great to get you started without buying a load of crap or spending a fortune in case you dont stick with it so its a great one before you move onto something more intermediate - plus, you can now notice what YOU might want in your next violin!

Alison - I've been playing violin (fiddle -- training with old time and bluegrass players) for about a year now and am wondering if I need to upgrade, as I'm about to move from beginner to intermediate courses. I've played stringed instruments for many years, including mandolin for several, so fiddle has been a natural fit and makes sense. Given this, would this violin be suitable or should I go for something of higher quality?
@TheOnlineViolinTutor
@TheOnlineViolinTutor 6 лет назад
No, this is a starter viokin in my opinion. I would go for something much better such as the cvn 600 or even 700 which is very nice and will take you a little beyond intermediate level too.

My first violin I bought off of Amazon, and it worked great for me as a beginner, and I recommend it to see if this is something you want to do so you don't waste a ton of money only to find out this is not your instrument. The only things I hate about it is the pegs at times don't want to stay in place, making it harder to tune it and the low-quality sound of the instrument, but what do you expect for something that cheap? After practicing so much and getting better, it was time to upgrade to a FiddlerMan Concert violin.

I took violin as a child and wanted to pick it back up some 30 years later, as a hobby knowing I'll likely never play for anyone. I need to go cheap but don't want the quality of the instrument to make learning harder since I know I'll lose interest if it seems harder than it should be. In other words, I need to make sure it's as fun and enjoyable as it can be since I have no other motivations. With that in mind would you discourage a Mendini in favor of a Cecilio, or would it make that much of a difference?

@ThePurcupine
@ThePurcupine 10 лет назад
The Online Piano and Violin Tutor Good question! LOL I keep going back & forth because past experience with other instruments just tells me that I'd be much happier with a mid-range, but I think for starters I should keep it at a max of $200, to include books and replacement strings if needed. Something I wouldn't have to invest too much in but not be ashamed to donate to a younger student if I lost interest or decided to upgrade.
@TheOnlineViolinTutor
@TheOnlineViolinTutor 10 лет назад
Sooz icle Well if you want to go straight in there, the Cecilio CVN 500: goo.gl/K0f2tx is at the higher end but is a superb violin for the price and you will not be disappointed. If you want something a little less, then there is the Cecilio CVN 300: goo.gl/viikfN Whilst this is a nice violin, its sill a student quality one, you may find that although its nice, you can tell you want something better, which is where the 500 comes in, but then again it is another $60 more. Hope that helps )
@ThePurcupine
@ThePurcupine 10 лет назад
The Online Piano and Violin Tutor Thanks, it does! It's going to be a Christmas gift to myself so I shouldn't be so hard on myself if I want to splurge a little. I think if I do decide to take the plunge I'll go with the 500! BTW when you wear a smoky eye and red lip as in this video, you remind me vaguely of Lauren Cohan. I suppose violin bows could be used to fight zombies, right? ;-)

I intend on ordering this violin, I'm a total beginner, never even picked one up before. Some of the reviews on amazon say you need to have this violin professionally set up after receiving. Did you have to get this one set up or did it come basically perfect out of the box?
@TheOnlineViolinTutor
@TheOnlineViolinTutor 8 лет назад
+Gary Jones Im not sure what they are talking about - you just get it out the box and play! if you want a professionally set up violin, the you need to be paying well over the $500 mark. I think what people forget, and as a result are quick to poo poo, are cheap violins, which claim to be nothing other than what they are! You have to expect a $130 violin for $130! The reviews on Amazon are not always great because folks generally expect a $1,000 violin for $130 and they cant play it - so they blame the violin! Does it sound like crap when I play it....??
@op-1kenobi568
@op-1kenobi568 8 лет назад
Ha. Awesome. Thanks for the info. I see that all the time on Amazon. People buy cheap stuff and expect a top shelf product. If the $130 violin plays and sounds like a $130 violin I will be satisfied. I really just wanted something playable, at a reasonable price to see if this is something I even want to pursue, then I will upgrade to something nicer. I've been playing guitar for years but have been very interested in expanding my musical horizons. =] Anyway, thanks again..

Allison, you're my go to person on violins :) and I have a problem. I've watched both of your reviews on the Mendini violin ($63) and the Cecilio violin (this one). I'm going to go buy one. However, I don't know which one to get. Price isn't a factor, it's more of a personal preference. I think the Mendini violin has a slightly deeper and richer tone (which I actually like) compared to the Cecilio, but the Cecilio violin is pricier. Does that mean the Cecilio violin is better? Being someone who's played both, which violin do you think is better? Which is your personal favorite? Which one would you suggest? After having them for awhile now, has there been any problems with either one? I'm sorry for all the questions :( I just really want to get more information on the violins before picking. Your reply would be greatly appreciated :)
@TheOnlineViolinTutor
@TheOnlineViolinTutor 10 лет назад
hands down CVN300. The mendini range is their sort of 'budget' range if you like so you will get what you [ay for. Whilst the mendinis are good and serve a purpose, the CVN300 is always my 'go to' violin to recommend as it sits at the top of my list out of the CVN100, 200, MV200, 300, 400 and 500 so it basically pips all those to the post. Buy the CVN300 - SOOooooo worth the extra moola and you will be pleased when it arrives..... :)) If you you go to buy, would you mind terribly if you use this link to Amazon as i do get a few dollars commission goo.gl/viikfN :))))
@BboySapphire
@BboySapphire 10 лет назад
Ohhh thank you :) sure, I wouldn't mind using the link :D just one last question though, does the violin come already assembled? I've heard from a few people that violins off of Amazon usually comes with the bridge separately, and so you would need to fix it yourself.
@TheOnlineViolinTutor
@TheOnlineViolinTutor 10 лет назад
Eagle Xiong No problem. Thats what im here for. I have the entire range as i mentioned before and not a single violin needed any 'assembly' to it. The only thing they needed was tuning - but every single violin in the world needs tuning as you are probably aware.

Dear and most Admired Alison: I keep watching your videos, and I like them a lot. My daughter has been learning for a year now, she is 6 years old and got her first exam, where she got excellent comments. She currently has a very low-quality violin 1/8 size, she should be moving to 1/4 now. Would it be good to get CVN300 1/4? The CVN-300 and Stentor II (1500) are about the same price over here, and CVN-500 is about 10% more. Thanks in advance for the time.

I have been interested in playing the violin for a while and I'm quite experienced with instruments because I have played the Guitar for 7+ years, Piano, and quite a few other instruments. The two types of violins I'm interested in is this one and the Stentor 1500. I really want the Stentor but I don't know if I should spend so much money on it and then just not end up playing it at all. I'm so torn between which to invest in. Can you let me know your opinion on which to buy?
@TheOnlineViolinTutor
@TheOnlineViolinTutor 8 лет назад
+Chloe Duvak Well its up to you - buy a better violin and you will have more success as the instrument wont hold you back, but buy cheaper to 'test the water' so to speak and potentially give up because the instrument isnt as nice. I would go in in the middle and buy something decent to get you going without breaking the bank. I assume your current guitar is a nice one if you have been playing for 7+ years, so what would YOU recommend guitar-wise to me for example? You would give me something decent, not too cheap, but satisfactory for me to get started on without getting annoyed about the guitar being crap. Even though I have 30+ years on the violin and im professional, the same rules apply to me. I want to try it out, and im happy to invest eventually, but need something not too crap, but not too expensive....

Yes the CVN300 was made in colours too. You can also get Mendini coloured violins too, which are not as good, so make sure you if you do get a coloured one, its the CVN.

Good candidate for "Pimp Your Cheap Violin". Already has ebony hardware. D'Addario Prelude and Super Sensitive Red Label are reasonable strings. Cecilio strings are caca. This thing would probably ROCK with a good bow.

Don't buy this violin. I have no idea how much they paid you to play these and boast about them, but I bought one, it was crap. The tuner didn't work, the keys kept on slipping. I then returned it, got a new one, same problem. Invest in a good learner violin that you can resell later, save your money. I trusted your judgement and your review, these were made in a Chinese factory for super cheap, you will just get screwed out of your money.

Thank you for your comment. I would like to address your points. 1. no one paid me to review this violin. I was simply reviewing the violin for the price point and audience it was aimed at. 2. I had no experienced any peg, sting, or tuning issues as you mentioned whatsoever. This performed just fine. 3. I made this (and the others) review over 8 years ago so I can only attest for the violin I had at the time of making this. video almost 10 years ago.

I'm not sure. it depends on what kind of learner you are. if you learn very quickly and you're patient then you should be fine learning by yourself. if not, then I would still give it a try and if you can't you should try taking lessons. I'm just doing the open string exercise right now already feel comfortable with 1-3, But I'm a little nervous playing it and my bowing arm is a little shaky, also can't seem to go fast enough on 4 will keep working on it but I will practice at going slow and make my way up. *Reaper The EAV is the only one in the entire collection I do not have, so Im not sure what to say really? Sorry. My comments on the 300 are the same as in the video, but im totally useless to you right now lol. From what i have read, its just an antiqued finish, so if i had to 'guess' i would say its based on the cvn300, with just a different finish. Cecilio have done that before where their coloured violin/electric acoustic violins are based on the 300 with a different finish etc etc. Im just guessing remember, but it wouldnt surprise me if they were both the 300, but the eav had an antique finish...

You could get either or - not much noticeable difference. I would however, which ever violin you buy, get Pirastro Tonica strings and replace the factory strings asap as it will make a huge difference in the sound and playability of the violin/strings. The bow wont have to work as hard.

@TheOnlineViolinTutor

its fine to mix strings. As long as they are good quality, then all will be well. Its when you have a nice set of say dominants or pirastros or d'adds then mix them with a $2 string for example that you will notice a difference. You will cause no harm, but you will hear the inferior sound coming from that cheaper string compared to the better ones you have on there.

Mv 500, mv 300, or the cvn 300? I am just starting out, and have narrowed it down to, pretty much, this. But the more I look into this, the more I find people saying that it has problems with the length of the tailpiece and with an oversized bridge, and they would rather have bought a mendini? What do yiu think? Which instrument should I buy?
@TheOnlineViolinTutor
@TheOnlineViolinTutor 6 лет назад
You will always see reviews of people complaining about these types of violins. If you want a violin that has no issues, then you need to pay upwards of $1,000. Other than that, all student violins are like this. I would take what they say with a pinch of salt as most often or not, it is people who cannot play who make these reviews and therefore cant get it to sound right, or its teachers etc who do not realise that they should be reviewing on behalf of new players with low budgets, not professional violinists. I have never heard of a violin with a long/shot tail piece - tells you everything you need to know about these reviews! These violins you mentioned are fine, but I would go for the CVN500 (goo.gl/K0f2tx) as its a good price at $189 and if you put good strings like Pirastro Tonicas on it, you wont be changing it for quite some time, plus your learning experience will be better with a better violin. The 300 is $120 and the mv500 is $140 so for me the cvn500 is the way to go.

What are your thoughts on the Cecilio electric violin? I've been playing acoustic violin for almost 10 years now and I want something that won't disturb other people in my building. How is the tone of this instrument and are their any drawbacks of buying an instrument that is so inexpensive? I just need something I can practice on that won't break my college budget. Thanks. :)
@TheOnlineViolinTutor
@TheOnlineViolinTutor 10 лет назад
I think anything by Cecilio is fine. I have the whole collection now and there is plenty to suit ones budget. Their electric violin - dont expect too much as its not a top of the line model and not designed that way, but it serves a propose and is great for the money and performs exactly at where its pitched at.

What is the difference between the MV line and the CVN line? I ordered an MV 500 since I am new to playing the violin, and was wondering how it compared to the CVN 500. The CVN model retails for about $400, whereas the MV retails for $375.
@TheOnlineViolinTutor
@TheOnlineViolinTutor 9 лет назад
Confirmy Confirms The MV range is Cecilios sort of 'budget' line. The CVN500 is far better than the MV500. Having said that, the MV500 is my favourite of the ENTIRE Cecilio/MV range, BUT, you must put Dominant strings on the MV500 to really get the most from it. If you dont, you are really missing out on a lovely tone that violin can give you as the factory strings are really poor. Put some good strings on and its wonderful.
