In response to a recent comment I received about the earnings from selling KDP low content and medium content books on Amazon we take a deep dive into the actual earnings, looking at the taxes on royalties, the average worldwide incomes and finally a new perspective on how to look at passive income from selling books online. We look at some other types of passive income and then discuss how much savings you would need to earn the equivalent in earnings from book sales and how long this may take.

Paul? Thank you for all your efforts and for creating a KDP tribe. People who have a small outlook on life, don't see how $1000 can change an individual's life. $1k can FEED a whole family in south Asia $1k can send kids to school for a year. So, no, its not sad, far from it.

Totally agree…KDP doesn’t require much initial investment which helped A LOT of people staying afloat in their life. @@paulmarles In the Philippines $1000 can pay for a 2-year college program to learn a useful profession. And that is LIFE CHANGING! Yes, some people live in places where you might need $100,000-$110,000 per year to live comfortably, but the vast majority of people in the world are never going to earn that much in their whole working life (assuming 35 years of working, multiplied by $3000/yr) So the comment you reacted to is very narrow minded and blinkered.

I was dying in my old job of 12 years. It took everything from me. No matter how much extra effort I put in I couldn't generate more than $70k a year gross. Which was more than enough money, but not nearly enough joy for the exchange. People like you really inspire me to invest in myself, learn and develop my skills. Now I'm just about to publish my first journal using software you taught me how to use! Thank you so much for all you do! Even if I never make a penny I am grateful for the experience. Like you, I got very angry at that comment lol. I live in Zambia where it's possible for me to support myself and my girlfriend, live in a comfortable 4 bedroom house with good security and yard space, pay all of our bills, utilities and groceries and do all of that by spending less than 1200 dollars a month. So earning 30,000 after taxes would still allow me to live a very comfortable life while saving more than 15,000 dollars a year in anticipation for future investments and growing a family. I appreciate the breakdown Paul as I'm sure many others especially from third world countries would as well. Keep up the good work.

Thanks Paul, I followed your tutorials and treated making books as a full time job for 6 months, after which time I burned out and couldn’t do any more. (I’m not very talented with graphics and dislike computer work but did my best ) It’s lovely to see a few books selling each month, with a bigger payment around Christmas time. My best seller is a word search and my second best is a humorous cover notebook that only took a few minutes to make with no graphics skill. Good luck all you hardworking book publishers out there.

Great video, Paul. I've always wanted to have a publishing business and creating puzzle books and low-content books allows me to do that. I want to make money but for now, I"m concentrating on making a good product that hopefully people will want to buy. The way I see it, earning even $15000 from royalties will make for a better retirement down the road.

Well answered. I agree with you a hundred percent. $37K per year is a very respectable income in most parts of the world. KDP business is not a "get rich quick" scheme. It takes time and effort to build and develop your business. It was only your first four years. The next four are going to be even more profitable. I like your videos very much.

I didn't hear you mention, but also since you have a business you deduct your expenses from those earnings which further reduces your tax burden. An employee also has expenses related to their job but cannot deduct them.

Living in Russia and now in Turkey, income from KDP is at the moment the biggest pillar supporting me and my family. It's a matter of perspective. KDP brings us enough in our current living arrangement but as we're planning to move to Israel for the next 6 months at least (Israel being one of the most expensive countries) that income would not be enough. So, I'm working on increasing it. But it's not sad at all :) As for 2000 books. I've 164 books at the moment but about a hundred of them are notebooks that I've made in the first month in this business, just like you, and later unpublished.

When I tell people I make six figures a year writing ghost stories, their first question is how long is it? How long did it take to write it? When I tell them I write a book a month, they accuse me of hiring ghost writers. All this has done is to turn me off from teaching. I have been writing and self-publishing full-content books since 2010 with zero to little marketing (no time to do so). I have published 950 books. Initially my monthly revenues were about $60 (USD) monthly. Recently I am averaging $350-$400 monthly. Not enough to live on. My income bracket is about 10%. So thank goodness I have a “day job” and this would be typical for anyone self-publishing and not even marketing their books.

Hi Paul, thanks for sharing, I 100% agree with you! $150k in 4 years is absolutely amazing, I'm around $50k in 3 years myself with KDP. Could have been more? Yes! Could have been less? Yes! But it has been life-changing anyway, and it will be even more on the long run. Thank you Paul for this informative analysis. I started about 8 months ago and have published only 40 low content books and hardly any income, still I enjoy the learning process, development of my skills. I even started painting because of this activity and yes I enjoy making these books and use them myself and as presents for friends. I will continue making them and maybe one day I will really earn money with them.

If you persist and aim to improve each book slighlty then sales will eventually come. It's great that you've developed your skills though. Something may suddenly come along and you can apply your new skills and make a success of it. That's what happened when I stumbled across KDP books.

Just started watching your vids, and love the concepts. Been having fun working on my first comic book, and even working on my novel idea. I hadn't considered using the chatai as a conversation partner I can bounce ideas off of for continuity, as well as fact checking. I've completely reworked my outline and am making progress where I had been stalled. Just wanted to chime in on the concept of doing these things with NGC. Some may consider it small change. It's still low labor intensive small change. Consider that typical job, irregular hours, labor intensive, 40+ hours a week. Now consider the value of making the same amount per year by making a series of NGC items. I'm looking at it as a means of funding me buying some 3D printers, but it wont end there, the NGCs will still trickle in money which can be reinvested. If you can do a low labor task to increase your revenue stream, why not? It increases not only your buying power, but your investing potential.

I'm building my puzzle book publishing to provide a passive income to supplement my meager savings in retirement ten years from now. My goal is $2,500/mo. ($30,000/yr.) Sounds doable to me. So far I'm up to $25/mo on three books in three months. Woo-hoo! I've learned so much from you about the little things that make a difference...the 7 keywords, the Look Inside material, the A+ content, learning to do Ads (39% ACOS on my first ad, just over break-even), timing, keyword research, finding good puzzle generators, designing good interiors, etc. And I've learned a lot about the KDP platform and how to ask for things from KDP, like getting into the right Categories, getting my title changed, etc. Now starting on my fourth book and applying all the learning to move (hopefully) at lightning speed.

Great video on perspective! Another factor is "current earnings" are often way higher than "average" earnings over a number of years (because the business is GROWING!)...for example, say over 5 years you earned 10, 20, 30, 40, them 50K...that's an average of $30K/year but a CURRENT earnings of 50K a year.

I snorted my drink out when I saw Greece at 26k per year on that list. We have like 60% unemployment in many parts of my country, the average salary is for those who actually do have a job and that includes government jobs that produce no work but get paid super high salaries. The minimum salary in my country (which the vast majority is working for) is at 700 euros per month and that is 8400 euros per year, or about 9000$ per year. If I could make 30k$ per year on KDP I would be livid with joy.

@@paulmarles It is about to get worse, the people born between 1955~1965 are about to get into pension and they expect to get big pensions, but our pension system is not based on personal savings, it is based on socialism, so the people that work now pay taxes and insurance so the pensioners can get money and then when the workers get older they will get into pension and be given money from those that work at that time. But my parents' generation (55~65) are the only workers which do odd jobs or still keep some of the jobs that still exist. Once they go into pension there will be nobody to pay for their pensions since most of us are educated, finished universities but can't get a job because there are no jobs left.

In my country ( Poland) I could make maybe around 12 000 dollars/year. That's why I moved to Germany few years ago. Now I'm making around 1700 euros/month which is around 20 000/year. I started with KDP 1,5 year ago and managed to sell 150 books in first 3 months. Which was great by that time. Sadly my accound got suspended since i bought shady cover and interior on fiver for around 20 bucks. Then they blocked me but I have managed to recover my account. Sadly again, i had some personal issues and left KDP up to this moment. I think i actually watched every single one of your video from the oldest. (Took me a while... ;d ) Now I'm going back to business since i feel more and more that traditional work is not for me... and i feel burned already (29 years.) I'm gonna give here an updates from time to time. For now, all sales dropped to 0, had about 60 books. But I have unpublished most of them since they didn't make sales anyway and I used sometimes interiors for them sold on fiver like coloring pages for couple bucks but i know they weren't trully original for that price. Now, for me. even 1000 dollars of pure profit would change my life dramatically since I have a lot of expenses and by the end of the month I usually stay at 0 or +- few hundreds bucks saved. Fun fact; I work for Amazon... as delivery driver. 300 packages a day really can bring you to reflections on your life. Anyway. Thanks for the lessons and keep going Paul so do I.

I use your links. Amazon published my first no-content book on December 8th, 2022. A few days ago, they published a medium content book for me. I now have 16 published books, no, low, and two medium content. It's February 9th, 2023. One medium content book took a week and a half to compose, and Paul, you were there Step-by-step. I can't wait to earn my first dollar. In the meantime, I'll be composing as long as Amazon publishes. "To the moon, Alice!" "Straight to the moon."
