Welcome to The Chow Hall. This is just a quick review of the Lanney 12 inch stainless steel smoker tube, which can be purchased on amazon for only 15 dollars.
For the price, you can't beat it.
Consistent smoke for the duration of your cook.
I have a camp chef woodwind, which is a great pellet smoker, but suffers from the on/off smoke effect that most pellet smokers have.
With this 15 dollar smoke tube, I can now get consistent smoke for long periods of time.

Chow Hall, you are spot on about the "on-off-on-off" smoke cycle of pellet smokers. I was disappointed in this feature after buying a pellet smoker. I have had a vertical smoker for years and was use to continuous smoke in my smoker to offer good bark to my briskets, pork and so on. The smoke tube offers continuous smoke which is key to better meat cooking.

Just purchased one of these, so your video was very helpful. Hope you do more using the smoke tube.

I sold the woodwind when I moved not too long ago. Ended up buying a pitboss verticle smoker, forget the model, think it was walmart exclusive. Honestly haven't felt the need to use a tube, seems to do better than the woodwind with smoke, think it maybe floats around in the cabinet more before it moves out but who knows. May end up adding a tube at some point though. Thanks for watching!

I never have used the hooks or brush. I will say I’ve used the baster a few times though so, probably ended up worth the extra few $$

Great review! How long does it smoke? Is one load enough for a 5-6 hours BBQ or I would had to fill it several times?
@TheChowHall
@TheChowHall 4 года назад
Zsombik István I want to say I get about 5ish hours out of a mostly full tube but I’ve never actually timed it honestly. I don’t have a torch so I never fill it 100% full due to how I light it though. It’ll smoke for awhile. On something like a 7 pound pork butt I’ll end up adding another quarter to half tube full to have extra smoke for awhile, but it’s probably not needed, as it’s just meant to add to the smoke your smoker is already putting out. I always end up with a real nice smoke ring.

Meat only accepts smoke for maybe the first 3 hours or whenever the bark layer is formed. After that time you are just wasting wood. One full tube is all that is needed

I’ve been using mine for over a year now and I consistently get 4-1/2 to 5 hours of smoke from a full tube. I’ve smoked salmon, beef, pork butt, bacon, ribs, cheeses, and I’ve made smoked tallow by rendering in my smoker. Hot smoke, cold smoke, this tube can do it all.

Doesn’t work. As soon I put in my gas grill it turns off and no smoke

You need air flow. It works great for pellet smokers as they tend to have fans blowing air in the chamber. I don’t imagine there’s much air flow in a gas grill. Probably better off using those metal wood chip burner things

@@TheChowHall you are correct. I went from the wood chips to this unit and I’m going to have to go back. Funny though my brother has a gas grill as well and he said it smoked like crazy.
@TheChowHall
@TheChowHall Год назад
@@erk-1 do you let it burn for awhile first? That’s the only other thing I can think of. You gotta really let ‘em get started before closing them up in the chamber. Some gas grills may just have more airflow than others as well, hard to say.

@@TheChowHall that was my thought to burn it more so I did this afternoon about half way and nothing. The funny thing that it’s smoking right now with burners off. 😂

Sorry for the late response - If you are used to using a stick burner or even something like a weber for smoking you will notice a distinct lack of that high level of smoke flavor. Using a smoke tube isn't going to get a pellet smoker on par with charcoal/wood smoker in terms of overall smoke flavor, but it will get you closer than not using one. The thing with pellet smokers is that you can still get smoke on the food (just not as much), and they are a set it and forget it type game generally. It's more about the ease and the consistency then it is about the heavy smoke. One thing you could try is the char-(wood) type pellets. I haven't used them personally but they are a mixture of charcoal and wood, Charhickory for example. That might help. Let me know if the smoke tube has helped! I find it does, and use it on almost every cook, long slow cooks, roasting temp cooks, etc.

I put 2 smoke tubes in my pellet grill sometimes.
@Thomas998822

@@curlylarrymoe how much closer in smoke flavor, to a stick burner can you get with 2 tubes?
@TheChowHall
@TheChowHall 3 года назад
@@Thomas998822 I don't think it will ever get that close. I haven't tried two tubes personally but ultimately a smoke tube is just putting out the same type of smoke the smoker is already putting it out. Like the flavor profile between pellets and charcoal / actual wood just isn't comparable. I'm sure like.. chemically there is more going on too. Adding a smoke tube does boost the smoky flavor but not in any comparable sense to a stick burner. I think a lot of people transition and are disappointed due to that. I've gotten to where my stomach can't handle the heavy 'smoke' of a stick burner, so a pellet smoker is perfect for me, but I can 100% see why people try to recreate that stick burner flavor w/ a pellet smoker, I just don't think it's feasible. The main benefit I see to a smoke tube for a pellet smoker is being able to impart more smoke flavor when cooking at higher temps (like baking chicken for example), since the pellets providing the heat are burning at such a temp that they don't impart much of the smokiness they do when burnt at lower temps.
