Our best decision when retiring here in the Philippines was moving out of the city to the countryside. We have a beautiful farm site, screens on the window (very important) It's peaceful, quiet, low cost of living, and distant neighbors so we don't hear them or their Dogs and chickens. We save lots of $$ on expenses that can be used for weekend excursions instead of paying high rent. We are not paying $17 a month BUT very reasonable. If we were still in the states our costs there would wipe out our pensions the first few days of the month. Here we almost can't spend it! The best plan is live in the country, grow your own food and VISIT THE CITIES during your free time.
@@alexd8933 I rarely go to the city except for business only. Weekends are for excursions to other country sites. I wouldn't move to the city even if you have me a wheelbarrow full of money, a free car with a driver and a fancy home in a gated community. NO THANK YOU!
@@PhilippinesFarmLife I drove truck for 28 years so had my fill of the big cities. I never found any city in the USA that i would want to live in for 1 day.
The Spider is a huntsman spider. It is poisonous but not deadly.. they will usually run from humans and they don't create webs. They are very fast and are good for keeping other bugs out of your house..
@@CarefreeChris CarefulChris 👈🏻 see what I did there? He may not get that reference and think ya wanna boil his rabbit! Two distinct differences 😏 Now me, I'd have tossed in "..trix are for kids" 🐰✌🏻
Absolutely a great video. Your positive outlook to everything makes them great. The thing that impresses me is how you handle some of the negative comments...you don't take it personal. Miserable people will always be there...just keep doing what you're doing. 98% percent of us out here love everything you do!!! Also, I am coming to the PI three weeks from Tuesday. I would like to schedule of "one on one" chat session on anytime this week...Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday morning my time would work buddy. I'm in New Hampshire, so maybe 7am my time would work for me. I'm part of your facebook group also.
You could get a cheap place like one of these when you 1st move to the Philippines, then take your time seeing what other rentals are out there. The spider is your pest control.
My gosh that spider was huge! Have you experienced flying cockroaches? 😂 When I was little and used to go to my Lola's house in Cavite, there were nights when flying cocroaches would come out! I used to scream when they landed near or on me! 😂 I love Ampalaya. Quick story, years before we started dating, my husband has been asking me to go out with him. I lived in my 30+ acre homestead and one of the vegetables I was having a hard time growing on my homestead here in Texas was ampalaya. My husband got wind of this issue. He studied the vegetable and how to grow it in Texas and months later, he left a huge basket of ampalaya at my doorstep with a sweet note that if I have dinner with him, he'll grow more for me.❤ The rest is history😊 We're still growing ampalaya on our ranch and the kids love it. Great video Chris. I love the local scenery. Thanks for taking us along. Ingat.
Yes when I was stationed in South Carolina. They're huge. What's really creepy is when they turn their heads and watch you. They called them palmetto bugs. I see why they call South Carolina the palmetto State. First night couldn't sleep because of the noise they make. Second night we declared war on them and killed hundreds within one hour. We lost.
There are so many Islands and different shape and size Islands. Some Islands have more Palm tree fuzz than others. Why would you want to latch on to the first island that you come across? You're stuck with that island forever? You should explore the other islands and see what they have to offer. Explore, explore explore. So many Islands..... get it?
Some neighborhoods with these prices really aren’t meant for Westerners…nor are welcomed. If you don’t know someone in Brgy…you may be told to leave…rich have security guards…poor have two or three Kuyas gambling near the front entrance or at the Sari Sari store..they will ask questions and tell you how to get back to the main road if you don’t answer appropriately.
@@CarefreeChrisI have experienced both forms of reception…Once after a wrong turn into a very poor neighborhood…older Tito suggested this wasn’t the place for me and not to come back. Others have been perfectly fine…tons of kids of course curious and asking for money… that’s normal. Just have to know what to expect.
I'm really empress to the American man that really serious to his filipina girl friend and filipina is lucky to have good American man that's what I can say.😊
I saw one of those big spiders in a place I was staying in Angeles City in the middle of the night crawling on the wall. I was not about to go back to sleep until I caught it. Took a while but I finally put it down those spiders can move fast.
Hello… Just want to interject this…. Ampalaya - in English is a type of a gourd called Bitter melon, and it holds true to its name if one does not know how to properly prepare it prior to cooking… 😊
Ive been living in the philippines province for over 4 years, from the uk so im used to cool weather. However, I find I mostly dont need aircon and a fan is enough. But here's a pro tip to make life comfortable during brownouts. Get a battery backup power station, either to run a mains fan, or more efficiently, a 12v fan like you see on truck dashboards. They're only 5 or 10 watts so really help to make the battery last. Also a 12v light, plus you can charge your phone too. The reason for 12v is so you dont get the efficiency loss using the inverter. Just make sure the battery has enough capacity for your needs. Mine's about 1kw hour.
@@CarefreeChris I don't know, Chris... that guy may have just completely change my idea of "retirement"! Can you tell me what city this is in? Looked pretty good and I want to do some research on it. Thanks, just subscribed.
Hi chris, I just started to watch your page apartments, please let me know if iand only if you can see if there is any bottom floor apt or hose . The problem is I am in a wheelchair but in therapy. That's the reason for a first-floor please send or post a video if this is possible. Thank you in advance
For wheelchair access in the Cebu City area you're going to focus on two neighborhoods. One the Cebu Business Park and two the IT Park. There you should be able to find an apartment with wheelchair access. I would caution that the Philippines in general is not super wheelchair friendly and I do see a couple of guys in both of those neighborhoods who are in wheelchairs.
I would like to see some more places out in the providences that have more of a full kitchen full bathroom a little bit more western style if that is possible, but I love this video and it helps explain a lot
Thank you It’s still would like to see more places that you can rent in different areas of the providences their amenities and what they have to offer. I find this very interesting. I looked at Thailand as a place to go, but in the end, I decided it’s not for me. The Philippines was next on my list.
Ampalaya or Paliya in Bisaya is bitter gourd. A local vegetable good to control diabetes. Balamban is my father's hometown. It's cold at night and early mornings. Enjoy the slow pace of province lifestyle.
Ya its called 'bitter melon'. Got sick off of that when I ate in a lunch buffet. May have been from the day before...never again. Ya looked like a wolf spider, although it looks darker in color. We have them that size in Florida. Ya, Mary Roses pad looks like a good place to crash. Thanks for the video, Take Care, MaryRose and Chris...Jim
Hey Jim. Her place is ok. Works. I'd crash there. I'm hearing from others and thought this myself, the spider is a huntsman spider. Local to the area and everywhere. Harmless but teleporting fast.
Hmmm... I can see that you are holding a selfie stick through the reflection on the window. But somehow it doesn't show on the video ? Did you remove it in post?
That's what I'm talking about, a nice little studio in the province for $100 or less. I just don't want to move there to be inside all the time. I am more of an outdoor guy so why waste $? That spider was defiantly an XL, lol. I want to find out what type they have there. I dispatched 5 Black Widows last night. Now those really get me on edge. I have been bitten twice before and the first time did not go well! Edit: That looks like a normal PH house spier, big but not harmful to humans, likes to dine on cockroaches, so an ally! Ironically the only two species there that are dangerous have been introduced, and are both of the Black Widow family. 🤦♂
@KevinVenturePhilippines You can look up 'pension houses' in Cebu and find some that are around the same price. Those type of dwellings are plentiful in the Philippines. Edit: to say; That place looked a lot nicer then most 'pension houses'
That huntsman spider is actually not nearly as big as they get…I lived in a house for a month in Puerto Galera with several of them…they are very quick and catch and eat cockroaches …disturbing it not dangerous
My girlfriend in palawan lives in a private room for 4K a month with no AC, it’s pretty unlivable in my opinion. I bought her a mattress too. Btw that is a cane spider; harmless. We have those in Hawaii too. But yes need a boarding house to crash out anytime brother
Considering how cheap the rent is you could buy an AC and just leave it if you move too far away to take it with you. But the CR is more of a turn off for me in the cheaper places. Dont love the Asian style toilet/shower situation
Studio all day everyday. Needs a Murphy bed, or convertible futon couch, fridge, desk and two chairs voila. Eat out and laundry out you are a rich man - great job!
We are curious why many americans scared of spiders and i heard they are no.1 phobia there 🤭, in the Philippines we just played them like toys, and we also use them for vice, fight spider each other with bettors around
@tuting1965 Yes, we even have a fancy word for it: "Arachnophobia". But as a cobra, my biggest fear is falling under the hypnotizing spell of some Indian dude squatting while playing the flute. 🐍
I reckon the apartment is cheap for only 5k a month and you got more privacy. By the way that ampalaya is called bitter melon in English my husband doesn't mind eating it.
Hi Chris, thanks for this video and showing us the "down to earth" places where people that have a "tigh budget" to work with. I see many vloggers show us the "upper end" of the Philippines where people have more money to live in more uppper class area's. Your video is more around my budget. I will be going to Philippines next year and am looking at all are's of Philippines. I have never seen your vlog but will now concentrate more on what you have to say. Now, l wish l could find a great woman that will be happy to live in the condition l choose .
Thanks brother and hope you make it out here soon. I like to show a little bit of everything. I’ve shown some upper scale stuff as well as just every day living stuff. When I’m traveling, I do try to stay on the cheaper side.
We regularly get those spiders ..they are very fast, cannot live them so close by though. Just part of the Philippines..my partner says there house spiders are the same size in the UK. On separate issue, it’s good to think about extra safety for your gf, thats why there are special houses just for ladies. Certainly a kitchen is a must ..I again personally would not rent rooms out to share as you’ll likely to get the bf’s of potential renters that can lead to problems…in many ways.
ampalaya I was told is bitter gourd. Wow can not believe they fit 4 people in that tiny room , jail cells are bigger. LOL. We have those spiders in the house all the time. Took me awhile to get used to those huge spiders since I am not a spider fan. I have not had a real shower in a really long time, use a tabo everyday. Also we have no AC in our house. The fan works well.
It would be helpful to the guy if you could mention the city in your description. Its can be cheap living here... I think you are in Palompon Leyte Philippines... If you need decent medical help its not the best place to live for a foreigner..
hey bro great videos. i dont want to be mean but you can get much more views if people can see more clearly whats on the thumbnail. maybe zoomed in more? or a bigger face on the thumbnail? and bigger font? 😊
Having a fridge is a necessity , cold drinks on a hot day will boost your morale. Be patient, I fiound a nice house for 6k with 2bd,shower water heater, water filtration, air con and fridge.
So I take nobody is going to kill that spider? Is it renting the wall space? One thing that amazes me is when you learn about other cultures and how they live you can understand how they come to the US and thrive. No complaining, they just focus on what they need to do. That's a general statement but I grew up in a city with a large Filipino community. My first girlfriend there was a Filipina in elementary school. Lol. But anyway it is evident in a lot of Africans, Asians in my experience. And their attitudes are excellent. Another thing I've been thinking about pertaining to this is how little you really need to get by. Got me really questioning whether I want to go to the province first before staying in a larger city. The only thing I'm concerned with is running into a spider that big. I'd have a fit for sure if I saw that thing. Great video. One more thing. Do you have some kind of Drone Selfie Stick? In some of the shots the camera seems far away and as if you were holding the camera but I don't see it.
I rode.on one of those bicycle trikes when I was in Cebu city. I was 250lbs at the time. I felt to bad for the guy I over tipped.him. Of course every time I came outside, he was there waiting. 😆
Currently in Makati, but flying into Cebu Tuesday. Should I decide to stay longer, I'll get something long-term, but I'm looking for hotel recommendations for about a week. Expense is not a concern. Any insights are appreciated.
If you’re interested in checking out Cebu City you could stay at the Seda hotel. The one either in the Business Park or IT would work. If you’re looking for upscale accommodations then go out to Lapu-Lapu and stay at one of the resorts out there. Neustar casino is another option as well as the Waterfront.
@@CarefreeChris Booked a room at Seda Ayala. Resorts are fine, but I want to be within walking distance of the mall. I'm traveling around SE Asia, narrowing the list of potential places to hang my hat, and I think this will offer a better opportunity to get the lay of the land, and a feel for the community.
Damm, are huntsman of that size common in philippines? Never seen one when i have been on vacation in philippines. The second room looks modern, have a proper shower, little bit small, but for 4k, not bad.
