Which ever safe you wind up buying, make SURE you get one with a MECHANICAL combination lock. As soon as you get it, follow the instructions to change the mechanical combination - you're then as safe as you're ever gonna get. NOTE: A safe is a deterrent - not an absolute impossibility to get into if someone has the time and tools. Most important is to bolt all 4 corners to the concrete floor from inside, hide the safe in a closet with a descent door and lock, then get the closet alarmed. NEVER display a safe so that people can see it. Th e fewer people who know about it and see it, the better off and more secure you will be. While I think your video was spot - on, Safes are not something I'd share and or discuss with the public - just my honest opinion. One last thing Mike...... If you want a better safe (much better than a "gun safe", buy a used Jewelry safe!! They are much heavier, stronger, thicker, have better locking mechanisms, are higher in their fire and burglar ratings and over all just much better safes. They won't have the fancy paint finishes or pin stripping but you will wind up with a much more secure safe!

20 years ago we were robbed. They only took 1 thing, our safe. It was a small safe, weighed a little over 100 lbs. A few days after my wife asked if we were going to get another safe to replace old one and how much bigger would it be so 2 people cant walk off with it. I made a call to ADT and had a alarm system installed. Every door and every window. I told my wife, there, we have a 1500 square foot safe with thousands of places to hide a few items. Yes I know it doesn't protect against fire but no one is going to sneak in on me while I'm sleeping. Have a Jesus filled day everyone Greg in Michigan

I spoke to a locksmith once who said he had been to a lot of homes where fire had occurred, and he had to crack into the gun safe. His comment was that every safe he had opened after a house fire had damaged weapons in it and that none of them kept your guns protected from fire. This made me reconsider buying a safe. Unless you are concerned about someone breaking in and stealing your guns there is no need for one. Even in the case of a break in, I think I'd rather have a hidden closet or some type of secret space in my home for my weapons that is undetectable to a robber than to deal with a company that will sell me out when the heat is put on them. The biggest problem with all of this is that the FBI is totally out of control and has far too much power!

And because I am a disaster, Chaplin, I have seen exactly what you said after these big fires call them safe sir worthless for Contant. Unless you have a floor safe and be honest with you, long guns are going to fit, but if you have important papers as I was told to make sure you double a Ziploc bag and keep your paper dry, because water is going to go down into it when they put the fires out. but the safety factor of someone stealing my guns and I don’t really have a safe place that I feel to put them that I could hide them. Well I don’t want them stolen to be used in a inappropriate way. Normally I have one on me 24/7. However, I can’t have them all on me and I don’t carry a long gun on every day whatever’s less I’m going out to do a particular thing like a hunting or target shooting. But I do know no matter what you’re gonna lose your guns in a fire if it’s in a hidden spot in your house or in the safe. So all my combinations were changed when I got the safes, they all match and no I don’t have a liberty safe.

Safes come in various fire ratings. The higher the fire rating, the more money the safe costs. The average consumer safe in the $1,000-1,500 range is good for less than 30 minutes in a fire. I have a document storage container. It's a 24" square steel box with a 12x12" area inside for storage. The walls are 3" thick of gypsum poured into place. It's rated for 2 hours exposure with the interior temperature not to exceed 150F.

1 1880 they had combination safes and it did out pioneers well. Safes are for currency stick with combination safes stear clear of the push button and you will be fine hide the combination in the family Bible and only advise family of the good book. As for guns comments earlier are good for me . I do keep ammo in the garage away from the closets with the guns.

Good morning Mike. I ordered a Liberty Colonial 30 back in April. I still haven’t got it and was told by my dealer it would probably be next year at this point. This news story hit and I decided it was time to get out. My dealer got me into a Pella safe. They are beautiful safes. Family owned and made in Iowa. Best part is I should have it within the next month or two. I ordered a custom size and was able to talk to the owner before I pulled the trigger. I think Liberty screwed up pretty bad and now they are going to pay for it for awhile. It’s unfortunate.

I wouldn't be buying a Liberty. Also wouldn't buy anything that wouldn't allow me to set a new combination. Most of these "safes" are light weight steel boxes that can rather easily be peeled to get to the locking mechanism. They usually provide a certain limited amount of time before the heat from a fire, will destroy the contents. Nothing in life is "safe".

Dear Mike, when we was on holiday in Crete when we lost the combination to the safe in our hotel room. We phoned down to the reception and a man arrived and opened the safe in less then two seconds. The special tool that he used was a ring pull off of a coke can. I have never had to much faith in these combo safe things after that. The safe I have at home is a Chubb Air measures 14" across by 10" high and 10" deep. The body and the door are both made from 3/8 steel plate. When it is closed and locked there are no gaps anywhere. It has a two sided mortice type key and the lock body inside looks quite impressive. 4 Big Coach bolts 3" by 3/8th hold it down thru the floor boards and into the rafters and 4 of the same hold it to both the back wall and the left wall. I used 2" spread washers under the coach bolt heads to spread the holding effort of the the bolts. Never buy a combo safe, they are just an open door to the wrong set of hands. Sorry this was a long comment, it was kind of shorter when in my head....Have a great day....

Mike, one of the best safes made right here in America is champion safe the exact same manufacture of superior safe so it’s the same company sort of like your Highline and then may be more reasonable or budget line safe but very well-made and when you buy either safe it comes with a lifetime warranty And I believe you can pass that on to your children ? Don’t quote me on that but when I bought my champion Safe, which was the top of the line with the most amazing paint job I’ve ever seen like they even put gold flake into the paint if you want to be really exotic ! At any rate, they told me everything is lifetime warranty, including the lock, so what I’m saying if anything ever happens like if God for bid your house burns down you get a brand new safe !! Even though I bought the safe 15 or 20 years ago and paid three or $4000 for it I just looked it up online that exact same safe is over 10-K now !!!! You would be pleased with a champion I’m sure of that !! And what the rep told me about if I ever lost the combination is that since the Safe has a lifetime warranty, they actually send someone out that has champions special computer that hooks into the lock and they get into the safe that way after of course you verify your information they won’t send the “safe cracker”out until you prove who you are and set up an appointment !! And Mike between you and I , with the technology of today I guarantee you, the FBI has one of those fancy little computers that could crack almost any electronic safe, lock of today just by hooking into it !! I like the idea that champion won’t give anyone access over the phone. They have to send a technician out to your residence or business much better. Look them up online champion safe and if you go and look at any of them don’t open one up it’s like driving a new pick up truck once you do you Gotta have it !!!! Lol ! Later my Friend !

Greg from northern Michigan. The older technology Sargent & Greenleaf wheel style combination locks (which can be reset from the original factory combo) are the way to go. The newer electronic locks can be opened with the original factory code, a new code sequence you enter in, or the so-called factory reset (backdoor) code. Plus there are electronic black boxes now available which plug into the digital lock pigtail cord which will try all possible lock numbers and will eventually find the right code within 15 minutes. Digital may be convenient but is not very safe.

I chose Fort Knox over liberty because they had a much better fire rating at the same price point. Make sure you compare the specs such as wall thickness, rated fire time and temperature, door and frame thickness, etc. When I budgeted for my safe I decided to spend 10% of the value of the expected contents on the safe purchase. Like a one time insurance payment. To be sure the manufacturer does not keep the combination, have a private safe company change out your lock. And finally, avoid electronic locks. Stick with the manual dial type lock. There are machines that can open either type of lock, but the dial type takes way longer. The only true way to keep someone out of your safe is to not let them know you have one or where it is.

Mike, I discovered RU-vid and your channel during COVID in 2020. Since that time I have watched 99% of your videos. You and I have a lot of the same interest, are close to the same age, and I am on board with probably 95% of everything you say and do. As for your comments on Liberty Safe, I think you're overthinking things a bit. As career law enforcement officer for nearly 30 years, I have spent almost 10 of those in local law enforcement and 20+ on the federal side. Of those 20 years, 14 have been spent partnering on an FBI task force. Everything you read from Liberty Safe's comments makes total sense to me and I do not see anything wrong whatsoever, with the way they have handled this issue. One of the first things worth mentioning is that the burden of proof for a search warrant far surpasses that of a subpoena, so if the FBI provided LS with a search warrant, they certainly would have no problem coming up with a subpoena, but there would be no need. I know the FBI receives a lot criticism these days, and I would say rightfully so when it comes to those in the higher up leadership roles. However, as for the agents on the ground doing the every day investigations, 99.9% of our law abiding citizens have absolutely nothing to worry about. So, if LS is providing assistance to law enforcement, why would you or any other law abiding citizen be concerned? While your comment about the FBI having the technology to open a safe without the assistance of LS may sound legitimate to the everyday person, it truly is not that easy. I can totally see why they would first request assistance from LS, it makes total sense to me. Believe it or not, finding someone within the FBI that has the ability to by-pass a high-end safe is not nearly as easy as one may think. I've been on plenty of search warrants where we are using any tool known to man to try and gain entry into a safe. I have even seen court orders requiring the owner of the safe to provide access to law enforcement; however, that is a step no law enforcement agent wants to deal with. I was not familiar with LS before your video, but the fact that they have the ability to assist entry into safes previously purchased by customers or that they are willing in certain situations to assist law enforcement, in my humble opinion, should not prevent you from buying a safe from this company. I applaud LS for assisting law enforcement and would question those companies who are not willing to do the same. In the end, I agree that none of our personal information, or safe combinations for that matter, is truly safe (no pun intended) in this day and age. Thank you for the work you do and the content you create!

I bought a large Browning safe after researching everything available on the market at the time. HEAVY duty with impressive deadbolt design and (theoretically) top grade fire protection. More expensive than the big box store safes, but I liked the features, design, and strength very much. Considered Fort Knox at the time, but it was even more expensive for the same size. The Browning ended up be my "Goldilocks" safe, j-u-s-t right! I just saw this morning that a famous manufacturer of electronic locks has a "military grade EMP resistant" lock available. I may check that out, or perhaps even convert from keypad to a manual combination lock. I trust the Lord, not my preps, but try to be wise in planning for the days to come....

Mike - they do not have to voluntarily give the codes to law enforcement. However if they are given a search warrant or subpoena, they must comply. For example - a drug dealer stores 10 kilos of coke in his liberty safe. LEO Gets 1. a warrant for the safe 2. A subpoena/warrant for Liberty’s database to get the code to the safe. Liberty does not have to give the codes just because there is a warrant on the safe. They would, however, be compelled if LEO gets a subpoena for their database.

This is a non-issue. As you said, if someone wants in, they will get in. Even if they COULD steal the backup combination, they STILL need access to your safe. If they have access to your safe then they can just drill it out (or take it) to gain access. This is a mountain out of a molehill.

Hi Mike, your story reminds me of my telecommunications engineering days, where CALEA was new and it's intrusive to communications from law enforcement to get into your phone systems if legally necessary. The Communications Assistance for law Enforcement Act (CALEA) is a statute enacted by Congress in 1994 to require that telecommunications carriers and manufacturers of telecommunications equipment design their equipment, facilities, and services to ensure that they have the necessary surveillance capabilities to comply with legal requests for information. CALEA is intended to preserve the ability of law enforcement agencies to conduct electronic surveillance while protecting the privacy of information outside the scope of the investigation. In 2005, the Commission extended coverage of CALEA to include facilities-based broadband Internet access providers and providers of interconnected Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service.

Mike. I understand your initial question/concern. I work in the physical security industry and want to advise that (just for your information) this is indeed a common practice/feature of electronic locks. It definitely varies by manufacturer and the specific model of lock. I think the general public is simply not aware of the features (which the manufacturer most likely documents in their manual) and their sales person should have advised of. I also Understand that the security of the database is a concern, but keep in mind that on top of the database, it’s the randomness of the combo, the randomness of the safe itself and the fact that tracking/tracing it down to be able to put everything together highly increase the overall security of the feature. Drilling a safe, which is about the only way to get into a locked safe, can be very expensive and repairing a drilled safe requires a highly trained locksmith who would have to get the drill point from the manufacturer anyways. The practice of standards on how the company verifies the need and accuracy that a “backdoor” combo is used and appropriate to give out is the ultimate stop gap for how secure an independent safe/lock actually is. Hope this helps to shed some light. Personally i would not be concerned with purchasing from liberty or most other reputable safes.

Stay away from digital combination safes, instead go with a old style mechanical safe and have a trusted independent locksmith change the combination to one of your choice would be my thoughts. Good luck Mike. p.s. we enjoy your videos up here in Sigel Pa.

I did my own research years ago. I bought an AMSEC safe. MADE IN AMERICA….. most big box store safes were based in the US but made in China. Now with this news I need to research more about companies saving codes. The best thing about video’s like this is it opens conversations that most companies look at to make future policies from other companies mistakes. Bud Light, Target, Disney, Liberty safe, ESPN, Garth Brooks etc, etc, etc. Maybe one of the positives social media offers….. Before it gets shut down…….

Im a software engineer with 13 years experience and you're right, nothing is 100% secure online these days. However, i would say we are more secure than we've ever been. In this scenario, a data breach of backup safe codes isn't necessarily going to be the end of the world. I'm 99% certain that these backed up codes are probably just a serial number of a safe mapped to the code, theres not going to be any safe ownwr information tied to them. So basically, if someone hacks the liberty database and gets all the back door codes, they still need to go find the actual units with absolutely no information to go off of. Of course if they know someone with a liberty safe, theres a possibility they could use it then, but it is very unlikely imo

Have you considered finding a repurposed blower and using a flex hose on the dust chute and blowing all your sawdust to a pile outside, or even better building a covered bin and blow it into it. Then your could handle the sawdust with your tractor or skid steer. Just an idea.

Morning Mike , iv'e had a safe that i got from Cabelas 30 ish years ago , it's a anniversary outfitters , big , nice paint and just short of 1000 lbs empty , i had it delivered to a friend with a safe and lock business and they delivered it to the house , it's all mechanical dial combo with a key in the dial , when he delivered it , he informed me then that key codes and combinations were kept on file by the serial number of the safe , and the owners name . He then informed me he could change the key and the combination which i did a few weeks later ... go ahead and get one but i would get an all mechanical one ... find a lock and safe smith you trust !

They had a warrant to search the mans home. In that home was a safe, so the authorties could legally search it. However without the code they could not access it. They told Liberty we have a warrant, can you give us the code. Liberty said sure. They were not legally compelled to provide that information but did so of their own will. A subpoena would be required to force them to give up the code. A warrant allows authorities to enter and search a defined area. A subpoena forces a third party to testify or provide information deemed critical to an important investigation.

So many topics here that interest me but I hate typing. Goals are good. My Cabella's goal is a Volquartzen 22lr , $1300 plus and I am very close. I noticed recently that some of the one day 10% discounts work for pewpews. I started shopping for my first safe in the late 80's. There were usually several safe dealers/ manufacturers at the big "sportsman shows". Many of them had a scrapbook of theft nightmares. A popular method at the time was to go in thru a window, wrap a chain around the safe and drag it thru the wall with a big truck/wrecker. They also said a fire safe was only good if you live next door to the fire station. So, I consider a safe a deterrent but have a couple anyway.

Im no lawyer, but I always assumed if a search warrant was issued on a property, and during the execution of the search warrant, a safe was encountered and they wanted access to search the safe, do they have to go back to the Judge and get an additional warrant to cover the search of the safe ? Once the warrant to search the safe is granted, they can and will access it by law.
