Been feeling slightly alarmed (and worryingly responsible) at the amount of responses from folks stating they may just pick up and move across the world based on a 15 min YT video.... Here's an email response I just sent to a guy who said he's considering quitting his job and moving here (despite never even been here before....)

-Honestly, you may think you could live on $800 month/$1000 month etc here but at that budget life would be very basic (plus wouldn't include insurance, visa costs, emergencies, etc etc etc). Personally keep to approx $1500 budget and find that 'just' covers having a modestly enjoyable lifestyle here (one's milage may vary of course).
Both health insurance and long term visas can be costly especially depending on age. Under 50 health insurance approx $100 month and over 50 insurance gets increasingly expensive, factor $300 month-up. Visas: Elite visa $17K USD for 5 years, 60K USD for 20 years. Retirement visa you must show either 65k THB/$1900 USD monthly income, or 800kTHB/$23,000 USD in a Thai Bank account. Many under 50's do get other visas such as education visa to learn Thai Language or Muay Thai etc but this is a short term solution and they're cracking down on abusers.
Thus, BEFORE you say 'take this job and %#$@! it' and jump on a plane to move to Thailand... would recommend at a minimum coming for a visit FIRST. YT'rs like me can make it look all wonderful but of course daily life is much different than a 15 min YT highlight vid. So, please, BEFORE making any commitments (or burning bridges) come have a look first. Then, if you still feel the same and are financially sound, do a longer test (say 6 months) to see if daily life here really meets expectations, suits your lifestyle and your budget.

Almost forgot to ask also about hospitals, clinic...we're also originally from Vanc., now living in Ont. and planning to snowbird in Thailand if all goes well. Have you visit a clinic and talk about the medical system there?

@@tinahalim6589 Thailand has some of the best private hospitals in Asia. Prices are up to 2/3 less than equivalent in the West (prescriptions from private hospitals expensive tho, from outside pharmacies far less). Clinics are generally. quite good too.

I'm Thai. I want to say that yes, the price is very cheap. and has a good and complete environment No need to enter the city if not necessary. The further the condo is from the city, very low prices are common. Even though there is an easy BTS/MRT, in the heart of Bangkok There's definitely something exciting. No matter the nightlife And the general BTS is closed from midnight to 6 a.m. Of course, if you're at a pub in the city center and come out at 2 a.m., you won't be able to return to your accommodation by BTS. You'll have to take a taxi home instead.

That is an amazing deal! I really like the desk in the bedroom and the fact that there's room for a dining table in the kitchen area. The gym seems better equipped than many we have seen in these kinds of buildings when staying Air BnB. If you work online, the location is fine, and proximity to Dirty Don is a plus. Super bargain! Congrats on the 50k, too! Nice work and well deserved. 🎉 Edit: How was the bum gun in the apartment? Very important item!😂

If you worked online, or wanted to taste non-tourist Thailand this would be fantastic. But, its like being in the next town to Bangkok - it would take you 45 minutes to get to the center, bars, restaurants - meet friends etc. It would quickly become like a chore. But if you were working 90% of your time of course it would work well.

That's a great price for what it is. River view is perfect. New apartment. Very convenient with the supermarket, night market and shopping mall nearby. The desk in bedroom is alone a big "YES" for me. I'd definitely consider this one highly if i was to live in BKK.

Water supply, electricity and internet bills in Thailand are very cheap. And especially if it's a condo, there's usually free WiFi as well, including quite a fast and very good internet signal. Whenever you're hungry, you can come down to find something to eat every 24 hours, both from restaurants. and 7-Eleven in front of the condo as well as warm and hot weather throughout the year so you don't feel sad.😊🤗

Sadly I'm too young to retire and enjoy these places as they are (Mid 30's). 15 years ago I went for the first time and the entirety of SEA was completely different than when I went 10 years ago and 5. I can't imagine what it's like now. Especially Thailand and Vietnam. I would 100% stay here if ride shares are that cheap to the centre and I was retired. Even if I was gone for half the time on trips, it would be worth it to not have to look coming back. Of course if I was retired I'd probably take a less visited (For now) beach area and make that my home. 10 years ago I was at Lombok and saw your video on the developers. We had a chance to buy something in that area you mentioned then and it was super cheap even compared to sharing a basement suite here (Vancouver). 4 of us were going to put together money to buy something, but didn't pull the trigger. Looked again and it rocketed in price. Love your videos, probably the best out there for this. Not influencer basic bich, not overly produced and boring. Go around, positive, less visited areas in popular places, and prices. Amazing, keep it up. Do us a favour and if you get too big, keep a side channel doing things like this.

The food in Thailand is not contaminated like in the US. It's fresh, never frozen, no pesticides, no growth hormones, etc. I lost close to 50 lbs in 5 months eating mostly Western. When I got back to the US I gain the wait within 2 years.

Great video. My wife and I were just in Bangkok for 14 days - came back a week ago. The place is just exploding with development. We were there 10 years ago and 13 years back. It's a place I could live easily. The car, bus and scooter exhaust and smog are definite negatives. (for fun, ride the buses w/out AC. We got a ride for 1 hr. for 8 baht.) Think they were burning the rice fields up North before rainy season. A smoggy haze hung over until a rain storm moved it out for a couple days. But, the shopping and malls put the U.S. to shame. As for coffee options, I was fond of the Tokyo Latte in a plastic bottle at 7-11. They had a 28 baht price special. Bottled water was 7 baht. Also, rode the scooter taxis when there. Cheap! Long plane ride from South FL (over 24 hours.) So easy to assimilate as a traveler-as signs and MRT/BTS announcements are in English. A few Thai phrases go a long way.

Wow - there is absolutely no way you could rent a small one bedroom apt. in Canada for anywhere near $200.00 (not even a room)!! Everything is so much cheaper in Thailand and it seems that they've done very well upgrading their infrastructure as well... Very modern. The only thing that bugs me is the prevalence of everyone wearing masks (but it seems to be much more accepted in SE Asia than in North America). Love your vids!!

regarding the masks; this is because masks have been worn for decades in Asia when people have colds/flu here + for pollution .. when i lived in japan in the 90s every day i would see many many people wearing masks .. and that has been the case in my last 20 years here in south korea .. that's why the Covid thing with the mask wearing was no biggie in Asia unlike in west

That is very attractive to me. I currently live in a studio cottage here in the USA and my needs are modest. I love the fact the shower has a door. Many cheap apartments just have the shower pour right onto the bathroom floor. Kitchen on the outer area is the most sensible thing.

Imagine only spending $1170 USD for 6 months of accommodation with gym and pool. Incredible. Could spend another $250 on food and entertainment per month and you could go out and eat 4-5 nights per week and have money left over. Plus another $250 per month on travel around Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Kuala Lumpur. You're still coming in at under $700 per month. LOL

Around 6 years ago, my partner and I resided in a large, fully furnished apartment featuring 2 bedrooms with private bathrooms, a spacious kitchen with ample counter space, a generous living room, and a decently sized balcony. The apartment complex was equipped with 3 or 4 swimming pools, 3 gyms (one large and two small), and various activity rooms with everything from table tennis to board games. There were also dedicated children's rooms filled with equipment for them to use. In addition to a library, meeting rooms, and workspaces that could be booked and used at no extra cost, there was a separate small house that housed the large gym on the first floor, with a party space on the second floor available for use as needed. Situated right on the river's edge, the complex allowed direct boat access to and from the city center. We rented the top-floor apartment, and though I can't recall the exact floor, I believe we were on the 35th. For all these amenities, we paid 20,000 baht per month. Considering what we had access to, the price was unquestionably reasonable. We enjoyed the area, especially the night market, which was delightful. Exploring the second-hand market and discovering intriguing items was particularly fun. Another aspect I appreciated was the noticeably better air quality compared to the city center. Upon moving to this area, we could ventilate our home without the air purifiers shifting into overdrive. This area is highly recommended for those interested in taking a look.

Have lived on the Big Island of Hawaii since 1983. Want to retire in Thailand, spend time in Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Philippines, etc. Have Thai wife in central Thailand (Chyiaphum city, Chyiaphum Provence). Unfortunately, I have not seen her since before the "Plandemic". We have a small house on family property so no rent or mortgage there. But want to spend some more time in Bangkok. What a fascinating city!

I'm curious if those rates are based on a long-term lease (e.g. 6 or 12 month) versus something shorter (e.g. month-to-month or as little as a 3 month agreement), and whether there is a "fully furnished" option that includes interior decorating, bedding, towels, cookware, dishes, utensils, etc. for a true "move-in ready" experience. You hit the nail on the head by framing this place as a cheap home-base for the frequent traveler. Still, I'd probably pass on it since it's too remote and less walkable than I'd prefer. If one wants to live outside of the touristy areas while still having the option to go there on a whim, they can opt for somewhere like Lat Phroa or Bang Chak where options can still be found at reasonably low prices, especially considering that they are move-in ready.

This is a GREAT question ! Would be a whole lot more appealing if it was completely "furnished". But for $200 a month...what do you expect ? For me, I would be okay surviving on the food places in the mall and the night markets every day. That would be okay for me ! LOL

Yeah this is super cheap but 40 mins to Sukhumvit, probably not for me. I'd like the 10-20 max to Sukhumvit personally. Will look into those places you mentioned! edit; Bang Chak looks great, the Whizdom tower where he done a video is there.

WoooW!!! Had no idea how much the Land of smiles has changed since I was there 19 yrs. ago. The night market you featured looked so modern / clean. I envisioned something closer to what Taiwan has. To answer UR question if I would move there.........I think I would definitely give a try dude. Although it would take me awhile to once again get used to the climate.............hate the SE Asia climate. I grew & live in the US / WA State. I volunteered there for Internet NGO's before & after the tsunami after the '04 Christmas earthquake a 1/2 dozen times. Really nice people, great food but hate the weather. Same goes for Vietnam, Cambodia, etc. Good job on the vids!

What a beautiful city and nice people. I had some friends from Thailand and Vietnam in my math courses at uni and they were always very helpful and contributed equally. Can't say the same for some of my friends from the US who would often ask me for answers on their homework.

Thanks for sharing! This is a place I could retire comfortable with fully furnitured condo unit, co working space, gym and pool. Relative cheap area with Thai prices like this, close(max 15 minutes walk) to BTS, MRT or SRT is the way to go for me. You can find similar rentals 35 sqm and up in Bang Na and other places in the outskirt of Bangkok for 6-13 000 Bath depending on how fancy the condo are.

I'd like to test out this lifestyle for maybe 1-3 months to see if I like it. I mean for me I work 100% remote freelance... My son is away in college. Something like this could be great I've had smaller places in Ny, LA, and Miami in the past for anywhere between 3-5K US a month with less amenities... What a gem. Thanks for sharing. If someone planned to stay a really long time..Its kind of nice that the tv and fridge and microwave isnt included because you could get whatever type you want and be less limited. To be honest.. I would do one of those combination mini sized fridge/freezer setups like I've seen in kid's dorms. Microwave/oven/airfryer combo and snag a reasonably priced TV. Sure its only an extra 780 a year but.. If you really wanted to stay for a while you could live there the year for roughly a third of my current monthly. How awesome.

I suspect that 4500 baht is an introductory price to get tenants into the building, but it definitely resonates given the insane housing crisis many Western cities are faced with at the moment. For a lone male just starting out in BKK, this would give them options assuming they aren't earning a great deal every month. Who wants to spend 30% of their income on rent in an exciting city like Bangkok ? 5 nights of living like a monk wouldn't be so tough for someone with a day job, but this would be a tougher ask for a retiree. I’ve got a friend that just moved into a condo out that way recently. It could actually be this building. He visits thailand like 4 times a year and he just rented a little place to store his stuff. Before he had a place in Sukhumvit and paying 20k, I told him that was crazy for only staying in the place every 3 months. So he got himself a cheaper place.

Very interesting. I visited that area before and I actually prefer it to Silom and the other central areas. This is an incredible deal for what you get and would suit a single person very well. Canada is becoming a foreign land to me now quite seriously (prices, shift in social behaviours, government policies etc),so will use this information as food for future thought..

Good to see options. I have rented 22 SM condos for month or two. Is OK for one person if you are not spending much time there. During some mornings and evenings rush hour, you might wait 10-20 minutes to just get on the MRT or BTS. Unfortunately walking around BKK is literally hazardous to you health most of the year. But I love to visit the place.

A quarter century ago I paid 3000 per month for a similar amount of space in a similarly distant suburb, but without the most of those in-building amenities and without rail transport to the city centre. I'd call 4500 a steal.

Another way out there would be to take the commuter ferry from the Sathorn Pier to Pak Kret - it only runs certain times, though. Wife's family are from out this way - the area is developing quickly, since the Purp-line began construction.

With a well made murphy bed that turns into a sofa in the bedroom & put your media cabinet in there-turn that into living/bedroom; use the front area for home office instead of the desk in the bedroom & you could put an additional wardrobe in the front area as well for more storage, that could totally work. & you could easily fit a portable washer next to that dining table, I have one. You'd be set, especially at those prices.

Many things would need to be accomplished before moving to a new country like Thailand. For me, I would need to learn the language. To understand the government requirements as being a foreigner living long term in their country. It would mean being willing to give up my ties here in the U.S. Yes the rental cost is fabulous. Money differences between the U.S. dollar and the prices for food and services in Bangkok does make this an attractive idea. Perhaps a short stay vacation would help, to see how to blend in with this society. It is a lot to take in and consider. Thanks for sharing.

Lived in Thailand now for 7 yrs can’t speak the language, immigration,law etc has never been a problem. Bangkok English spoken language is their second language here. Best give it a try, better than regretting it:-)

I'm not a shopping mall, western restaurant or bar type of guy. Not much need for me to travel the 40 minutes into Bangkok central unless I have to. I like the idea of living in an area where "local" families live too. Supermarket and fresh produce market nearby. The rental price of this condo is 100% affordable and on my list of potential places to stay.

people you need to consider the visa regs very carefully here you cannot come and go into Thailand as you feel like all year and staying for 12 months is now (purposefully) very difficult. This is far more important than the price of a cheapo condo

Yes, as I PINNED the following in both the comments and description: *IMPORTANT!!!!! SOME OF MY RESPONSES TO EMAILS AND COMMENTS ON THIS & SIMILAR VIDS: Been feeling slightly alarmed (and worryingly responsible) at the amount of responses from folks stating they may just pick up and move across the world based on a 15 min YT video.... Here's an email response I just sent to a guy who said he's considering quitting his job and moving here (despite never even been here before....) ============== -Honestly, you may think you could live on $800 month/$1000 month etc here but at that budget life would be very basic (plus wouldn't include insurance, visa costs, emergencies, etc etc etc). Personally keep to approx $1500 budget and find that 'just' covers having a modestly enjoyable lifestyle here (one's milage may vary of course). Both health insurance and long term visas can be costly especially depending on age. Under 50 health insurance approx $100 month and over 50 insurance gets increasingly expensive, factor $300 month-up. Visas: Elite visa $17K USD for 5 years, 60K USD for 20 years. Retirement visa you must show either 65k THB/$1900 USD monthly income, or 800kTHB/$23,000 USD in a Thai Bank account. Many under 50's do get other visas such as education visa to learn Thai Language or Muay Thai etc but this is a short term solution and they're cracking down on abusers. Thus, BEFORE you say 'take this job and %#$@! it' and jump on a plane to move to Thailand... would recommend at a minimum coming for a visit FIRST. YT'rs like me can make it look all wonderful but of course daily life is much different than a 15 min YT highlight vid. So, please, BEFORE making any commitments (or burning bridges) come have a look first. Then, if you still feel the same and are financially sound, do a longer test (say 6 months) to see if daily life here really meets expectations, suits your lifestyle and your budget. Good luck STL

From my experience, every area in Bangkok has some cool places to check out. And every area has these night markets for the locals. I'm very familiar with the Ratchada area, where my wife used to live and it's the same thing. So yes, I could definitely live there.
