Losing a heat treat in the eye is absolutely fine . When axes are forged in many traditional ways a red hot drift is set in the hardened axes head to allow heat to migrate into the eye and some of the blade . Makes for a stronger head .
I bought one of these some 10 years ago.. made a hammer pole as you did, but made the blade into a tomahawk profile with beard. Cut the handle about where the red paint ends, then wrapped it in paracord about 1/3 of the length.
Nice work man! Pro tip, if you really want to make the wood look nice, run a propane torch over it a couple times before you oil. Gives it a cool look, because ya know...bushcraft! lol
The Birchwood Casey bluing solution does not prevent rust. It is a cosmetic solution you apply on firearms where the bluing is worn off. If you want some rust protection, you need to use hot bluing salts or rust bluing solution. Rust bluing is easier but more time consuming. Hot bluing only takes about an hour. The chemicals are a little nastier.
@@AdventureswithSpackmann i forgot youre in NY. I had the Midwest in my head for some reason! Keep me posted either way if you plan something or heas west!
@@BohemianAdventurers ah right we aren’t near each other ☹️ I will keep you in mind and same for you guys, let me know if your journeys take you to the east coast!
Cool idea! I dig harbor freight. Some of the stuff there is decent for budget bushcraft. I also keep my emergency car kit stocked with a few things from there. Corpral's Corner did a nice video back in the day describing a few things that work from there. Also! Their survival knife. It's pretty terrible since it's a hollow handle with no tang. Saw a few videos where guys jb welded the blade pin in place to make it a pretty serviceable light duty, dirt cheap knife. Next video idea? :)
@ExpendableOne23 thanks! Love Corprals corner! Those hollow handle knives for the most part are hard to make serviceable lol. Survival on Purpose has actually found some good ones, have you seen those yet? That’s a good idea for a next video! Thanks for watching!
I did see a video that went over all the knives sold there. I personally keep one of the "drop point edc" knives in my car kit, get home bag and bug out bag. They're very serviceable backup knives. Wouldn't trust them as my main tool knife but they're fine for light duty.
The Hiyahh and knee drop on the tree had me dying lmaooo. That silver axe is sharp (pun) looking though, I wouldn't even wanna use it. I feel like it would look nice hanging in the log cabin or in the barn.
@Corey Cook can you spell out for me why you are mentioning the silver one lmao. Yeah I loved the Hiyahh part too. I was thinking the same thing, AwS keep sake lol. Thanks for watching bro!
That video just gave me a good laugh - much needed today. I had to show my wife the pillowcase shin guards after showing her your last video. She smiled and said we’d be buddies. We can smell our own I guess. If I could get an entry I could go for a blued version of that axe if I won, but whatever is easier to send off works. I’m still furloughed so I have time to do it myself. Either way, thank for the fun video and have a great one. Now I’m off to go get the kid an inverted s’more. Cheers. Edit: “I want in” :)
@Miles Robertson lol awesome you shared with your wife after last week. I wonder what people who haven’t seen last weeks video think lol. Like wth? You’re in man! Thanks for watching and enjoy the s’mores
@@AdventureswithSpackmann awesome. I appreciate it. Win or lose, I’m happy. Keep on keeping on :) But now that I think about it people who missed last week might be wondering about carbon monoxide poisoning with that homemade tent stove. Ha ha
If you want in the giveaway please say “you want in” lol I’m bad at this. Giveaway is now closed!!!!!!!!!!! 11:15 am est 1/24/2021 thanks for entering!
Excellent energy and enthusiasm! No apologies. I'm gonna do this, then I'm gonna do that. Subscribed. What's that handle length? The HF web site is pretty inaccurate. I have a gap around 19-20 inches. The (after trimming) 2 lb head weight is about right for a 20 inch house axe (aka large hatchet). These smaller axes are kinda short so the head starts looking for your legs. Kneeling on a pad will keep the head away from your legs. I'm converting the 1.25 lb hickory hatchet at the moment. A little too light to split mesquite (nasty wood), but will do lighter/easier jobs and very easy to pack.
@Martin Hafner thank you so much for the kind words. I can check the length tomorrow for you and let you know. What are you converting the 1.25 hickey hatchet into? Thank you so much for subscribing and thanks for watching!
@@AdventureswithSpackmann Nothing fancy. Just the general cleanup since hatchets and axes are shipped badly finished. Remove varnish and paint, reshape handle a little to fit, add a lanyard hole, re-profile grind/edge, lightly flame the handle, clean up the butt/poll, saturate the eye with oil and oil the handle (3+ coats). This time instead of doing a vinegar or phosphoric acid treatment on the head, I may try the super blue. My favorite oil for very hard woods is Teak Oil (usually Watco). I'm considering the super blue because it worked so well on the pommel bolt I added to my Glock field knife. Besides, technically the vinegar/acid treatment of the head needs the head off the handle so you can finish in boiling water. I really like their work on the eye with this hatchet, so I want to leave that alone. The nice thing about an acid/boil treatment is that it is still food safe while the super blue has very scary chemicals, even after finishing, that I don't want in my food.
@Martin Hafner that sounds like a load of fun! I really enjoy reshaping handles for my hands. It’s so satisfying when it just feels better in the hand. I didn’t know about the super blue being toxic so thank you, luckily I haven’t cut my steak with it yet lol.
@@AdventureswithSpackmann Excellent! So even after trimming the poll, I should have something near a 2 lb head and a fairly straight 20 inch handle. Pretty much a standard house axe. Big enough to split your firewood reliably, maybe chop down some small trees/shrubs and do other small chopping tasks around the house. That also matches most bushcraft needs. I like the blade profile a lot. It has that nice low bearded style like a hudson bay pattern, so if you profile it thin, then it makes a nice crafting hatchet with your hand up behind/under the head. I may leave even a little longer poll than you did, like maybe an extra 1/4 inch or so. This hatchet fills a gap between my 15" Prandi german style hatchet with a 1.3 lb head and my 26" boy's axe with a 2.3 lb head (found an old 1990 woodings-verona 2 lb 6 oz head - nice hard steel!). The small hatchet is good for crafting, but poor at splitting some of the ill-behaved wood here in Arizona (mesquite is evil). The boy's axe is great, but a little long to pack sometimes.
Oh that was hilarious with the chin pads lmao! Nice touch lmao! Those are some sharp(pun intended lmao) looking axes. Yeah throw my name in the hat for the axe giveaway! Build yourself a new work bench before that table collapses on your lap lol. “you want in”
@Jeff Jackson lmao then it was all worth it!!! I had told Jay and Billy(the guys I was with in the last video) about what I was going to do with the pillows and they were laughing so hard just from me telling them lol. Glad you enjoyed.
@@AdventureswithSpackmann 🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😅😅😅😅😆😆😆🍻 lmao oh it was hilarious lol! You had to watch last weeks video to understand the padding lmao! If you didn’t you would be lost lmao!
Is that paint or blood from the “incident”. You’ve showing an increasing ability in craftsmanship on the channel. Do you know the movie Conair? You’ve proven to be a very useful mammal. 😊
@Mobile Winter Camp thanks a lot man! Conair is a classic! I’m not telling if it’s blood or not, RU-vid is listening shhhh lol. Thanks for watching my friend!
I have 2 Bowie's...16.3/4 inches tip to tip, full tang....one being damascus....great work horses....I know where there's a few awesome spots for filming I need to go back to. Since we both focus on survival gear and skills, maybe we could combine our skills and put something together...I'm on facebook as well... Benjamin Dring
@larry tichenor I’m sorry I already drew the winner months ago. I actually delivered it today. He choose the non blacked out one. So maybe in the future I’ll give the black one away. Thanks for watching!
Whasha doin' with the cut-offs? Should be some decent steel for further crafting. Caltrops? Wolverine blades? Knives? World's Clumsiest Thumb Tacks? Dish, bruh....DISH!!!
@David Mason I haven’t gotten rid of them yet cause I figured i could use them for something. Worse case just counter weights for something. Thank you for watching!
I want this man's number cuz I want to order those shin guards when I'm done splitting wood I can take a nap on the kindling I pay a whole dollar for each of them
Oh wait a minute I forgot redneck engineering I can do it myself never mind thanks for the idea though I'm just going to go redneck and yeah maybe find a way to attach a bag of ice and a few Budweisers and just tell my girlfriend I'm splitting firewood but then just go in the woods with my boys and drink beer and play with axes
