Roy, I want to thank you for your videos like this one. Since I've started making "smaller ticket" items, my sales numbers have increased dramatically. I'm getting ever closer to being able to leave my day job and make my living through my smithing. It's amazing how one small piece of advice can make such a substantial difference in a person's goals toward success. Thank you again.
We are so happy to be making a difference! Yes, smaller ticket items in quantity can help increase your pay, especially if you can make them efficiently! Thanks for being part of the channel. Blessings, Jessica and Roy
Thanks Just started learning yesterday 44year old mother of 4..made some weird hooks with some 6 inch nails. Love the spade hook. First project yesterday was a butter knife spoon out of a giant nail..lol.
On the guy saying it took too long to explain the burner. I frankly enjoy the long detailed videos. You give all the information we need and then some.
new to blacksmithing, made 8 hooks today from nails on a firebrick/butane torch mini forge thanks for posting this, I am addicted and can't wait to get into trying these techniques out.
Roy, I am just getting started in the blacksmithing trade and I can honestly tell you, your videos have absolutely influenced me. Don't let the haters get you down. God has blessed you with a wonderful skill and I thank you for sharing it!!!! God Bless and keep up the wonderful work.
I'm going to be out of my primary job for a few weeks due to knee surgery and I still want to be able to bring in some kind of money flow. These are great ideas to still keep things flowing. Love this channel!
Im 15 and started blacksmithing when I was 12 I used to make this hooks as practice and didn't think they were worth anything so now I think I might start making this and selling them just to cover the price off coal and maybe fund some new tools. thanks and you make great videos.
I’m a woman who will be starting to forge very soon. This so therapeutic to heat and beat. Plus my grandpa was a blacksmith. I need to do this to honor him, because he gave me so much in my life. And I Love to hammer stuff. You make things look possible. Thank You!
The best channel ever. Helped me so much. I can now even manage to chisel a almost straight line, lol. I Will definitely try to make those great hooks. /Peter Lassis from Sweden.
I made eight hooks this afternoon from large cut nails and your videos were the inspiration for that project. I will also be trying this hook out later next week.
I think u do a great job demonstrating I’ve been watching a lot of your vids because I bought a $15 anvil at harbor fright and made a brick fire place in my back yard and your videos have given me a lot of ideas and helpful tips for when a get some materials and tools to start making some of these things you’ve shown me
Roy, you're all right!!! I don't care what other people say!!! Lol 😆 🤣. Just keep teaching the best way you know how. So keep up the good work and God bless 🙏
Very good video and easy way to make money. Tell any of those people that do nothing but complain to find another channel. If they want 10min videos, then blacksmithing isn't for them. Great work, thank you for sharing your skills!
I just gotta say that I have watched several dozen of your videos, & I have no complaints about how you do them. But I watch them in order to learn, not to pick apart your technique.
Roy, I don't comment much but I did today just to thank you! Your videos are very appreciated where I stand. I'm just learning and you have already helped me a lot. Thanks again!
You and your wife have been a big help with the information that you share. I have been playing around with this for a few years and as of today I am cutting back some from my full time job to put more time into being the Blacksmith I want to be. I am not quite ready to quit my day job just yet though, lol. I should have begun years ago, but at 50 I still have a few more good years and will reach the level that I want. Thanks for all of these videos. God bless!
I know it's a bit old but don't let those keyboard warriors get to you. I'm a new, beginner smith (currently taking classes at my local smithing group) and your videos have been great help to me. Your demeanor and candor are refreshing and I feel like you really care to teach/help people to love smithing. Keep up the great videos.
Thanks for the video. I watched it before, but it is worth another go. I made a few dozen and gave them to my friends and family. They are easy and beautiful. Thanks again, Oh, and it is just best to ignore rude people and don't let it effect you in anyway. Hater be haten as they say....
Less than 10 minutes assuming 1 at a time (batching would reduce that considerably, as would a jig) and at $20/ hook, that's $120/hour minus materials/supplies. Very good sir, my hats off to you.
Great build Roy! I made a very similar hook in my first blacksmithing class along with some nails. I love the spade on top! I just hot cut mine and flattened it out. I am definitely going to give it another shot with a spade now, so thanks for the inspiration!
Thanks for making this video! Just starting out and was getting frustrated. Think I was bitting of more than I could chew. Going to focus on smaller stuff like this and leafs for awhile
I love to rewatch this video, it's good advice you share but for me I need to see the steps you do to help ne get started in blacksmithing and it's great therapy for me. Bless you buddy you are a blessed man thank you.
Ive been binge watching all of your beginner projects to sell. Got a bending jig and it makes a huge difference in speed and quality of bend, im still not the best but if I make another 20 hooks ill be better. Got to feed knife making addiction.
Not dissimilar from the hooks I've been making. Mine are long and straight with two holes on top and I've been hammering the tip around into a tight curl. Make'em out of 3/8th rebar hammered into a very gradual 6 inch taper. This is WAY faster and easier but, my rebar is free. I'm really just practicing my tapers and drawing out steel. I didn't want them to go to waste so, I made hooks. Love the channel Roy! Keep up the awesome hot metal action!
This is the 2nd video I watched from your channel I love it I been thinking about building a forge and teaching myself to blacksmith. Your hook videos are very informative thankyou
Thanks for the video, I have watched it about 8 times. I am always stuck by how much you have grown over the last two years. You seem to have learned to ignore the trolls and just plain rude comments. I like that about you, the higher road and such. Good man... Thanks again, I still can't make that spade shape right and I have over a hundred tries. All I have is a ball peen and it just kind of mashed the metal. I have a Cross Peen coming from Shawn Cunningham in a couple of days. Thanks for the great video.....
I like your work. Very informative channel. Making jigs and using them is not only part of the fun but said jigs pave the way for the two "R's" of manufacturing: Reliability and Repeatability. Reliably Repeating a product which will increase profit. Less time manufacturing more time with your family or whatever you want to spend your time doing.
You and Black Bear Forge have got to be the most informative channels on RU-vid ! You can post the same project and one can learn something a little different from each. Virtual high five!! I would love to see you both do a collaborative project together
Thank you for making these videos. Simple things we hobby smiths can do to help support out hobby. I enjoy your presentation style, and love your videos on items that sale well. So thanks again from Oklahoma. Matt
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. As I posted on a previous video I am just beginning to learn how to smith, mostly through books and videos like this. I will definitely try this hook as my next project to try and learn. Thanks again and please keep the videos coming.
finally after about a half dozen sets of tongs I managed to get a set that I can actually use. Next up maybe some hooks. Your videos are definitely eye opening.
Hello Chris thank you For this video,I enjoyed it very much.I like how you make your video's ,They are not boring and your information is good and clear.I was looking to start doing small and easy things to help make money to buy more tools and this is it.Thanks again.GB
Very nice I am heeling from a bad horse wreck I thank you, you explain things very good I can understand you thank you you be blessed to for sure buddy.
I wanted to say thank you for showing me how to scribe your videos I’m a licensed Farrier Of 22 years really only cold she just recently Purchased Forge and have started I will agree it is very very hard very time-consuming and must take a lot Of dedication you’ve got me addicted thank you again sir
It's absurd that people will complain about free information and demonstration, saying it isn't good enough. Unless there's something actually incorrect or especially dangerous about what is being explained, just be grateful!
Thanks so much for doing this and giving us your advice on how to do this. Very kind of you to share with the public. You make the work look so easy. As a beginner, I know otherwise! Love your site.
I have learned a lot from you! Try to make something positive about the negative comments, to a point. Some people just like to bother others… thank you!!!
Thank you so much for this! I finished building my first forge just earlier today so I'm literally just starting out. This looks like an amazing way to start developing my skills. Thank you again!
Thank you so much for posting ideas. I'm really considering trying to make this my career and the content you post shows ideas on how I might be able to do that.
Just a great video. Still amazed that you can do the video's and run a business and have a family all at the same time. Great stuff, and as, the comments from the majority of viewers suggest we all enjoy both the content and the man.
Glad you like the video Geoff. Funny thing is, those three things are 99% of my life. Not any time for hobbies (or barely for friends) other than you guys and gals on RU-vid. But I don't mind a bit, because I love what I'm doing, and what i'm doing it for.
Who cares what other people think, these keyboard warriors are the worst!!! You do excellent work. Your instructions are clear and presented well. Dont let others bitterness get to you. We all roll our eyes when we see haters in the comments. 🔨🔨🔨
I would like to see one of your hook jigs in action. Haven't found one of your vid yet that shows one in action. great idea on the hooks, I will be using it when I start smithing.
Christ Centered Ironworks I know it's important to get feedback when you are creating content! I really liked your video on make no hooks out of horseshoe nails, I'm going to make a few and use them on a key and mail holder project. I don't have a forge or large anvil, but I have a little 4lb one and a blow torch- thanks for sharing that info as well!
Nice! Hey Roy, can you show your anvil setup? I’m having a hard time keeping all my hardy tools and hammers/ wire brush... at the ready. Looks like you made some hammer holders and things. (I’m a total noob) appreciate your videos!
Nice work buddy. My anvil is much smaller but I also use coal. The spade head is a really nice touch. Also u ain’t kidding the sell ridiculously fast. Take care bud
Hooks for 20 and keychains for 10. You can make them either spades or leaves or for your hooks just a ball end. I'm just getting into smithing thanks for the ideas I've got some rebar and some other mild steel laying around.
I’m looking into doing blacksmithing as a hobby and hopefully make a little. Just look the art or the skill of how you do it. Also love the fact that you use coal air forge. I’m looking into making or getting a small air forge. Would it be possible if you could make a video on making a forge. I has seen a lot of videos on all different types. How would you go about making 1
