Have you ever considered adding a navigation unit to your dual sport or adventure motorcycle, but aren't sure how much you need to spend or even what you need? In this video I go over units on each on of the cost and functionality spectrum and share my thoughts on how they compare. I also give a short term review of the Carpuride W702 Carplay unit I've been testing for Carpuride this season on the XR650L ADV build.

I have been using Gaia for a awhile for hiking, kayaking and for scouting spots to camp. One cool thing with a paid sub is that you can use the NFS MVUM map overlays that will show you authorized motor vehicle routes so you know your legal. I also like that I can setup routes on the website and they are available on the phone app and can be saved to the phone. I need to checkout this unit, Thanks for the info.

You mentioned having issues pausing then playing back the music with the Carpuride unit. In my experience, it works best when connecting the phone to both the Carpuride for Carplay/Android Auto and your headset via bluetooth for sound (phone>Capuride via Wifi, then phone>headset via bluetooth, basically). Doing so, I can control my music/calls and so on... directly via my headset controls, and/or through Carplay on the Carpuride unit. Connecting the audio through the Carpuride also tends to sound like crap and muted, so going directly through the headset is definitely better. I'm taking off for the TAT next month, so I'll be testing the unit extensively! One thing that can help battery life if you are going to run it on an external battery would be to lower the screen brightness a bit? As far as price is concerned, I bought that screen as an alternative to running my phone as my main GPS, or a Zumo XT. It definitely compares favorably to both these options, in my opinion. Thanks for the review, glad you're enjoying your unit too!
@SwankyCatProductions
@SwankyCatProductions 2 месяца назад
Huh, I'll have to check exactly what is connected to what on mine 🤣. It just sort of did it automatically and I assumed that was the best way. Can you still control the music and calls on the Carpruide display? The main issue I had was that I could pause with the headset, but not turn it back on. Everything else seemed to work fine. That's awesome, let me know how it goes! Seems like having this would be a much nicer, more up-to-date option than your average GPS! Ride safe and enjoy the trip!

Thanks Ben-put this on my KLR650 just cable tied the Ram Ball to the Nav bar above the speedo so it doesn't sick out... fits perfectly doesn't cover the OMG dash at all wired straight to battery so i can use before i start the engine and saves it rebooting when you stall... love it perfect size for my old eyes🤓 connect the phone to the Carpuride and connect your Cardo headset etc to your phone for best results

NICE!!! Yeah it's definitely pretty helpful to have such a big screen, especially when you just need to glance at it quickly. I also really like that you can connect your phone and headset. Never dreamed we'd have something like this back when I got my first KLR!

I would remove the tiny screws attached to the mount and apply threadlocker. After using this on a recent BDR ride, I lost 2 screws. Aside from that, the Carpuride has been solid with Apple Carplay. Just make sure your phone is charged as it is useless without it. I'm having issues with Android Auto, onx app just shows a black blank screen but other apps work well.
@SwankyCatProductions

I wondered about that! I left mine as-is, just to see what would happen. So far so good, but I can imagine after a long day of rough trails and high revs they might find their way out!

@robbieandbeckie 2 месяца назад
It would be fun to do part of the BDR someday. I think it does require a Garmin if you get the official map routes. My Honda ATAS has Android Auto, I have never used it. I guess I might change my mind if I get really, really lost, though.

No BDR requires a Garmin. You can get the GPX files for free online.

It's GPX files, so you can download them to anything that can read them, like Gaia. No need to use Garmin.

Might be a good addition to my snowbike build or for big road trips on my FJR1300. I like to scout new trails and nothing looks the same when covered in 4-6ft of snow. Come upon forks in the trail all the time and don't always have a sign posted where it goes or how long that trail is.

Definitely! I haven't tried a carplay unit on a sled yet, but the Garmin Nuvi GPS I have with the sled trails is so much better than a paper map! Being able to find fuel stations and restaurants on the trail with Google maps on a carplay unit would be pretty slick!

Any opinion on Gaia vs Onyx Off-road?
@ApocalypseNouille
@ApocalypseNouille 2 месяца назад
They are very similar, but to me the biggest hurdle for OnX Off-Road is that it is limited to 4MB GPX file size uploads, which, for BDR or TAT routes, can be a pain because you need to edit your tracks elsewhere to cut them down to size, load them up in OnX, then stitch them back up. As far as I can tell, Gaia does not have this limitation, I've been able to load the whole TAT route with waypoints without issues, in one go. Otherwise they work pretty much the same. You load your GPX files or create your own routes on the website, and it will synchronize to all your devices automatically. To me, OnX's strength seems to be that it can show the terrain elevation in 3D and show user created tracks near the location you're currently at on the map. I'm sure it can do even more stuff, but I'm just beginning to use it and have not explored all its features yet as the file size limit really pissed me off.

If it’s not water proof it isn’t worth anything to me … If it doesn’t work in full mode without cell coverage, it’s worthless to me … I use a ulefone armor 13 with DMD2 … I can use the full nav suite any where in the world and take pictures underwater if I want …
@ApocalypseNouille
@ApocalypseNouille 2 месяца назад
The Carpuride is IP67 rated, so waterproof. You can also run Gaia or your GPS app of choice without cell service, just make sure to download the maps beforehand, your phone will use its GPS to track your progress. DMD2 is really nice, but this works very similarly. I would love to get the DMD2 compatible controllers to control my maps, though!

@ApocalypseNouille 2 месяца назад
@@timlubbers2884 Oh yeah, I played around with these too, bought a Doogee rugged phone at first and settled on a used Galaxy S10+ as my backup phone. That's what I'm using for DMD2. Screen size was really an issue for me, though, as with age my vision is starting to tank, so the 7 inches and screen aspect ratio were really nice for my needs.

Interesting but I'm certain you know it's nothing to install a USB to plug your phone or whatever else you have? That is a nice big screen but do you add service like adding it to your phone or something? I don't have/use cell phones, Hate Em' & used to have one until 2008 when I threw the F#@Ker away. Never looked back, never missed it, and never been in a situation that required a phone but that's just me..... I do like this toy & curious how ya get service? peace

BTW, good looking tower build on the 650L, did you cut out the metal to fit the screen or did it come like that, all ready to receive the screen? It looks good, going to check the price. Stay off the porno young man....KRA$H
@ApocalypseNouille
@ApocalypseNouille 2 месяца назад
You connect your phone via Wifi, so no need to add cell service. I have two phones, one that has a sim card (my regular phone), and a backup unit without sim card. Both work fine connected to the Carpuride, as the GPS signal does not use cell service. Just make sure to download offline maps on the phone(s) you plan on using.

I do yes! But the 12 volt to USB plugs that I usually use only put out 2amps, so the unit won't actually fire up haha. I'll wire it in directly once I relocate the battery. As for service, I believe the majority require a cell phone to be connected. I'm jealous that you're able to get away without one though! I do my best to ignore mine as much as possible. I often put it away around 8pm at night and don't look at it again until morning. It's nice!
@ApocalypseNouille

@@SwankyCatProductions I own a T7 and soldered the wires to a Yamaha auxiliary plug and connected that to the plug found under the right side fairing. I kept the fuse accessible, so I don't have to remove the panel if it needs changing. So that's another way to connect these screens without having to fiddle with the battery, if needed (if your bike comes equipped with this type of wiring, of course).
