$20 IBM Thinkpad T42 - Install IDE 2 SD and Windows 98. Does it make a good retro gaming PC?

Picked up this IBM Thinkpad T42 in a bulk pick up of stuff. In this video I remove the IDE hard drive (and some of the RAM) and install a nice shiny IDE 2 SD with a 32GB card and Windows 98SE.
Then we run through some games and look at the advantages and disadvantages of this kind of thinkpad as a retro gaming PC.

One of the more promising solutions I've seen for this problem is a midi sound canvas emulator called MUNT which compatible with WIndows 98 but usually has too much overhead for people running period systems. That said, the Pentium M is more modern and should run it decently.

I got a T43 I just bought with Windows 98 se and it does not have the proper pixel and color selection it's only showing like 16 colors do you know what I gotta do for an updated monitor driver where do I gotta reinstall the windows 98 disc I didn't put it in I do have another Windows 98 install disk I'm trying to run old programs going back to Windows 98 Word 97 several HTML programs etc. this new stuff to me is junk

I've got some real glitchy audio with Duke3D on the same machine myself.. any recommendations? The WDM drivers lack any DOS compat whatsoever so I'm not sure if there's a different driver to use.

I setup a Thinkpad t42 and plays most dos games flawless. I don't know why everyone wants to setup dos games on windows 95 or 98 when because of so many driver issues when windows 7 can support them. it also supports compatibility mode to run certain games as dos, w95 thru windows xp. Windows 95, 98 and xp are flaking on dos games, and you would either be better with a dos shell or even windows 7.

I was never a fan of any Microsoft OS beyond XP, even Windows 7 was a step down from it - fortunately, I rid myself of my personal Microsoft abuser after the death of Windows 7 and am Linux-only these days (with a great Thinkpad collection). I've never understood people that believe that Windows 7 runs anywhere near optimally with anything less than at least a dual-core CPU and 4 GB RAM - even if I liked it as an OS, I wouldn't even attempt to install it on a T42 because it's going to get clogged up and bloated within an extremely short period of time the moment you start installing any additional software or games on it. XP runs extremely well on a T42 with with the maximum 2GB RAM, I would not go beyond that with any bloated Microsoft rubbish.

@@terrydaktyllus1320 Because windows 7 is a lean operating system compared to most other Microsoft operating systems, also has backward compatability to run the older versions application and setup in a shell if you want, it's pretty neat.

@@ceasar12c In my experience, Windows 7 always ran very poorly in single core CPUs with anything less than 4GB RAM. It has never been "lean" because you can't be simultaneously "lean" and have all of the "software layer bloat" that provides the very same backwards compatibility that you mentioned. You've actually contradicted yourself in that statement.

I tried to install win98 on my t40, after win install and do the first reboot, windows is no able to enter to setup again, it just keep rebooting. First time this happened to me.
