Here’s a new set of 28mm lenses. If you caught my previous episode, you know that the Nikkor 28mm f/2.8 AIS was the clear winner: superb for landscapes and close-up work alike. It’s sharp corner to corner and is amazing even wide open.
The other lenses in that challenge did pretty well though. And I feel like it proved for $50, you could get a pretty decent shooting experience.
Here’s a new batch I picked up for less than $20. Can they compare to the Nikkor? Would you notice the difference in real-world usage? Could a cheap lens you grab for $10 or $20 from a garage sale cut it?
We look at a Vivitar, made by Komine. It’s small, well-built and solid. 49mm filter thread. This is not the close focus variety - just the plain version. Reviews online say it’s average to good. Is it?
Next up is the JC Penny 28mm f/2.8. Mine is in Canon FD mount, and is bigger than the Komine Vivitar, with a 55mm filter thread. It’s multicoated which is nice but I don’t know the original manufacturer. Do you?
Then there’s an M42 mount Hanimex Multicoated. Honestly, this could be a twin of the JC Penny and I wouldn’t be surprised if they were both made by the same manufacturer. It could be a Tokina perhaps based on the build quality.
Finally, we have an Auto Aragon 28mm F/2.8. It’s silver and feels a bit more flimsy. It’s in M42 mount.
So how did these lenses pan out? Well, no surprise, none of these cheapies dethroned the Nikkor. But some took amazing photos regardless. This one shot with the JCPenny at F/8? I printed it out 13x19 and it’s on my wall, and it looks great.
Before I give my final thoughts . . . let me put in a plug for my next review of 28mm lenses, I’d like to compare a few better-known varieties against each other - The Konica 28mm f/3.5; the Pentax Super Takumar 28mm f/3.5, the Yashica 28mm F/2.8 and maybe a couple more!
So back to today’s lenses. Hey, they’re all “good enough” if you’re looking for a little lens to throw in your bag to take some landscape shots on a full frame camera. I’m sure they would be great if you’re looking for a 42mm lens equivalent on your crop sensor camera as well. Discreet street photography with focus markings on the barrel? Absolutely.
Watch the review for all the details! Until then, go out into the world, and start taking some great, cheap shots!

Great reviews! But you might want to upload in 4K. The reason is that RU-vid compression is horrible at 720 and 1080. If you only have 1080 - you can upscale to 4K and looks great!

Thanks for the tip! Will try that going forward - definitely shooting everything at 4K anyway, so worth a try!

Thanks for the comparison video. The Nikkor 28mm f/2.8 AIS was also my standard against which all others were judged. In an attempt to raise my standard, I purchased a Zeiss 28mm f/2 Distagon. To my surprise, the Zeiss images were equal to the Nikon. I was not able to find a higher standard until I compared 28mm equivalent images from a 6x9cm medium format Fuji rangefinder.

My current favorite 'trashy lens' brand is Opticam -- I have no idea what they are but both their 35mm and 135mm are amazing for the $1 price.

I need to get myself a fist full of Opticams to try them out . . . though like my other review on 10 135s said, many believe it's hard to find a bad 135 out there! Thanks for the tip, and for viewing . . .

This information is very helpful. Can you please add a more expensive lens in the mix just to see how these cheapies lenses do compared to someting like Canon Fd or Zeiss? Thank you

So in this set, that’s the role of the Nikkor. I haven’t shot with the zeiss, but compared to all the other name brand 28 f/2.8’s I haven’t found one to top the Nikkor. That includes Canon FD, Oly OM, Pentax-M and Minolta. But stay tuned for some good F/3.5’s (Konica, Pentax) I’m testing next :-)

Well, I guess I have to throw away all of my lenses and buy the Nikkor Ai'ses and never look back ;-) What about comparisons with the bigger names like Canon, Takumar, Minolta, Pentax, or even Leica.

I gave a little preview as my next group is less “cheapies” and includes the well regarded f3.5 versions from Pentax and Konica. Leica won’t be in the mix (the channel is called cheap shots for a reason lol). My other 28 comparison had a few more, check it out.

I have the Hanimex 28mm. My copy needs to be underexposed by 2/3 thirds EV to approximate the contrast of the 28mm Nikkor. Not as contrasty as the Nikkor and not as sharp, but decent enough for the price.

The Nikkor 28mm f/2.8 AIS is the best 28mm vintage lens by far. Now I wonder how it will do against the Leica R 28mm Elmarit or the Contax Zeiss 28mm 2.8?

@@cheapshotslensreviewsandph3559 $50! , LOL. Got to add at least a zero to that to get any chance. But the Nikkor, is a great alternative.

Well, near as I can tell, they use other manufacturers' lenses - and I'm pretty sure this one was a Tokina . . .
