The bottom board is the power regulator, the USB port is strictly used for power since there are a lot of USB power cords around now. The upper board is the fuzz unit, tone control, gain, etc. One of the reasons that they broke it up into two pieces is that the power regulator board can be used in all of their pedals and it can drive down the cost vs. a single board that has the effects circuitry along with the power regulator.

That’s a very simple analog circuit for distortion, though it also includes a rather crude noise gate which sounds like it is based on an analog comparator. USB port is unquestionably an option for powering. The use of a dughterboard for control and display is very common, though I’ve never seen it done on a stomp box. Someone spent a bit of money developing the first one of these so it can be very easily assembled. If you like it, it should last a long time judging by assembly.

I was thinking that same thing, likely for power. It is convenient if you have a bunch of USB cables sitting around and want to bring a power bank to push that pedal right in front of an amp.

I think the first board you pulled out is all power supply filtering, and charge pump to get 5v up to 9v from the USB jack. The second board had all of the parts that create the fuzz sound. Looked like a two transistor fuzz, but I didn't get a clean shot to confirm

You could be right it looks IC based, that could be a charge pump either to drop the voltage or double it to 18v. Wish we could've gotten a better shot of the top board.

@@Bradaran79 Any chance it could be a larger PCB footprint, and they split it into two boards to make it fit into the nano pedal enclosure? Alternatively, is the USB port there so that you can power the pedal with a powerbrick, like for cellphones?

The USB might just be so you can power it with a regular phone charger. Some fuzzes can operate on really low voltages. The FZ-1 ran on a single AA battery which is only 1.5v. The second version, the FZ-1A ran on 2 AA batteries at 3v. USB is 5v so there's plenty there. And remember that most power supplies these days have "sag" function that will take the voltage down to about 5 or 6 volts for the "dying battery" sound. And then there are other fuzzes that aren't really effected by that and will sound pretty much the same at 5 or 9 volts.

@@bthalko It could be a larger board split into two to jam in a A sized box. I don't see the point of the USB you can't program it and it's to cheap to have the ability to change parameters via PC maybe it is just mini USB power capable

Brad I don’t think it’s doubling the voltage to 18volts. I think it’s taking the 5volt from usb to turn into 9 volts. 18 volts would give you lots of headroom, which this pedal does not have

That looks like a simple boost converter to take the 5V from the USB and raise it to 9V to power the pedal. It actually seems like a pretty good idea to me

USB is only connected to power, the data lines are disconnected, my guess from the quick look at the circuit is that you could use a usb power bank to power it

To anyone with the joyo octave fuzz: before you toss it out for having that tin can sound, open it up and reverse the two caps c9 and c15. It takes seconds with a good soldering iron. Joyo messed up the schematics when copying it over. This little fix opens up the sound and gives it the fuzz it was always supposed to have. Or just buy this awesome cuvave pedal for $22. lol

I know I'm two years late and a bunch of other people have already came to the same conclusion, but the USB is definitely only power since only pins 1 and 5 are connected (VCC and Ground) to anything. The lower board appears to be all power circuitry and it looks like there is a 5V to 9V step up regulator next to the micro usb jack.

I'm fairly ancient, so I well remember the 70's, when so many people were sneering at Japanese musical equipment manufacturers, in exactly the same way that the "experts" (yes you, TPS) are currently looking down their noses at Chinese gear. I build a few pedals myself, and I don't think it's possible to do so without Chinese manufactured components. So I'm not at all surprised that this Cuvave is a good sounding pedal, I have dozens of really good, useable, Chinese pedals in my collection. And I use them, both in the studio, and onstage, right next to my 'booteek' $300+ pedals, and often in preference to them. I'd suggest people drop their prejudices, and start to realise that, like it or not, China is part of the modern world.

So I bought a cuvave fuzz for myself cause it's cheap af and this demo sounds fun and it's pretty damn good on guitar,better on single notes and power chords than full chords but still a lot of fun, what you dont see in this demo is that this thing is friggin amazing on bass! Roll the tone back to about 9:30 10 o'clock and dime the fuzz and volume for a killer bass fuzz sound,seriously if you have this in the same room as a bass guitar plug that bad boy in

Amazon changes the prices of items as the trend of the item sells more or less. Guitar string prices have been all over the place in the past years and its not like it was something that could be seen to be discontinued in the near future. A year from now or even later on if this pedal is available will either drop from $31 or level out to a slightly higher price than $22.

However, some of these reviewers on YT indirectly and artificially inflate these prices, especially if the word gets out and back to the people selling them.

That Cuvave sounds like it's starving for voltage. Reminds me of a Z-Vex Velcro Fuzz which had a knob that did just that, lowered the voltage to sound like a dying battery. Cool.

I just got the Cuvave Fuzz. I may be crazy but it is my favorite off all FuzzI have tried. Even over $200+ price range. It is everything all the others miss. It is crazy. I have tried PRS, tele and strat through Marshall and vox tube amps. Just amazing. Layer with the sugar drive you can really do some magic.

Im 90+ % sure the cuvave is a zvex wooly mammoth clone with the 'pinch' knob removed. I have a mooer bass fog which is a wooly mammoth copy in the same style micro enclosure and with the fog's ''squeeze" knob at noon the 2 pedals sound identical

That's kind of an ingenious design for a mini fuzz circuit board. I love cheap, off-brand Chinese pedals. They're great at making use of an extremely small footprint.

The Cuvave Fuzz is very nice! I ordered one after this demo and I quiet like it. The side usb input is to be used with a 5V DC cell phone charger (I'm using my Samsung phone charger). When using this, the circuit sees less current as opposed to the regular 9V. I A/B-ed it 9V power and the 5V power (from the cell phone charger) and it produces a slight different sound. Worth trying out.

Pedal builder here! Looks like none of the data pins are soldered to anything. It's just ground and +5v going into what looks like a transformer, possibly stepping the voltage up to 9v? Rather boring but strange, it's just a power input. Looks like it's got a totally analog topology though, so it's got that going for it.

That micro USB is going to power so it is used for power. The pedal is analogue and the dual pcb desinge is so it can be manufactured along with other circuits and use the same pcb desinge for the bypass and the Jack's ect. But the effect itself is analoug. From a pedal builder in the UK hi ❤️

The behringer is the best fuzz I've ever owned, and I've got some very expensive fuzz pedals too like the big deluxe sovtek big muff. I never use them anymore. The super fuzz just does that dirty 60s fuzz so perfectly

One of the many great things about fuzz; dosen't need to be complex or have expensive parts to be cool. One of the best circuits, ever,- the rare Buzzaround,- was conceived out of leftover, unwanted components. Got a couple under$50 around, and a Worrell Pennywhistle mini pedalthat stays on the board.Its a single knob that has several distinct voices. I dig that. That as well is pretty nice; the USB can't possibly do anything, right?

Those tc pedals are priced fair and you can mod them pretty easy, they use big board components, like the tone caps can be changed. I did some work to tc compression pedal and i use it everyday now.

@@kalkidasofficial i changed the powersupply. Eletrolytic caps, i changed the value and used better caps, i cant remember the exact changes to the powersupply but it made it more bitey without turning the knobs up very far. I basically experimented till i found the perfect combo of caps. I changed the tone cap 2. I put a slighty bigger tone to even out the punchyness, i use this peddle as compression and over drive, its slighty transparent, but it works really well lower output pickups to drive the amp alittle more to get that grungy country dig. I would suggest getting decade box if you plan on modifying peddles, there cheap and help when modding stuff to dial in the perfect combo of capacitors and resistors.. Also breadboarding is fun, i build my own circuits all the time, im working on one right now its got 3 lowerout put gain stages to see what that will sound like. Instead of flooding it one big output. Just an experiment. I havent had a chance to test it yet, beem to busy working on other projects at the sametime.

Your idea of a programmable pedal got me thinking, are there raspberry pi guitar pedals? So I Googled it, and there ARE! You can program them yourself to do all sorts of things, every kind of effect, or use other people's programs. That'd be really interesting for you to cover. Cheap but interesting. It seems like they're more for experimentation than to be actually used, but yeah

To me, that looks like a DC-DC buck/boost converter circuit on the right side of the board shown at 3:52 coming off the USB port. You can likely use that to power the pedal from a micro-usb plug. The left side and rest of the board shown there is also probably power regulation stuff for the DC jack input. The top board with the control is the entire effect circuit. I see a couple SMD transistor packages, a few caps and a bunch of resistors and the surface mount pots. All you need for fuzz. The rest of the bottom board is just input/output and the switch. And they built it like that because you can machine-manufacture the boards and case in bulk and then have a human slap it together in a few seconds and bam, finished product. If we had more detailed pictures of the top board with the controls, probably easy to figure out exactly what's going on w/ the fuzz circuit.

I’m guessing they put thar usb there so people that don’t have a power supply or know how to use pedals can just power it up with their phone chargers and get it going. Thats actually smart it you ask me, they area trying to appeal to a broader audience by providing convenience to their customer.

Well you win. My first impression was that this had to be a Mooer rebrand. The spacing on the knobs, the LED even the D/C input jack are all Mooer companies like Xvive have the D/C jack offset.There are always clues.the first is that the corners on the Covave are more angular. Mooer use a USB jack on their newer digital stuff but it is under the DC input. In short the Convave is the NEW kid on the block! Even with reviewing 1243 plus pedals you have wiped the smirk off my face. You scooped me. LOL So take a bow! Thanx for the heads up on a whole new line of pedals. Yes ...I did ...I bought the fuzz!!!

The EQ on the Kuvave definitely sounds more open than on the Rusty Fuzz. the problem with the Rusty fuzz is that it feels more bandpass-y EQ wise(or an overly high resonant peak) and turning it up takes out too much low end. it's not good if you want that big stoner/doom type sound. The breakup tones are v. good on the Rusty though.

Actually I paid 3 Brazilian reais (+- 0.70 US dollars) in this cuvave fuzz. Bought it from Wish in 2019 and indeed it sounds quite good

I have three pedals frontal cuvave. A distortion, which is pretty much a ds-1, a reverb and a delay. The reverb and delay are very good, with some interesting options, such as swell and reverse delay, but also some issues. For example, sometimes, when plugging the power supply, it decides not to work at all, and I found that the solution is to zero all the knobs and turn it off and on, sometimes twice. And then it works normally again.

WATT ? Either way, you've got a great Bubbly (not "Fuzzy") personality - perfect for these kind of things. BTW, my favorite of all of them is the SF 300 cause it has the Octavia 8ve - Up) built in, even tho for Chords you can only play "Root-Five-Root"/"Power Chkrds" with it in either of the 2 Fuzz modes. My 2nd fave here is that "Little Red Piece O' Pie". A fine line between Fuzz & Distortion (or maybe a happy Marriage of the Two ?) Is downright..."Woahh Man - BITCHIN !!!" Thanks so much for your great videos. Incidentally this is coming from someone who had the 1st Fuzzbox in Hometown (Lafayette Catalog Olsen "Fuzz Sound") way back when Fuzz 1st came out, complete with attached Cord, but Battery 10 Cents extra.

@60 Ciclo Hum That pedal were built in the same way fo the many TC-Electronic Mini series. Check any Mini series pedal and you will see that the way they're built is the same: Two PCB's put toghether by a 8 pin socket. And of course a USB port. Try to connect the pedal to the computer and use the "TonePrint" software from TC-Electronic to see what happen. That pedal looks like a copy of some TC-Electronic pedal. Anyway, great fuzz for the money. Thank you for the review!

Two PCBs joined toghether through a 8 pin connector, usb port ... Could be fun, just to know, to know what happens if connect by usb to a computer. Just to experiment.

I bet if you opened up the AZOR and found a bias trim pot you could up the bias and get it up to or above unity. It definitely sounds underbiased.

The usb in this pedal isn't connected to anything. But in the reverb, you can plug it into the computer, and it'll work as a sound board, outputting any sound you play in the pc. Nice for backing tracks.

If you’re after more cheap pedal reviews, any of the cheap TC pedals in the Rusty fuzz enclosure are good value. 3rd Dimension, Fangs, Echobrain, Thunderstorm, Prophet. All cheap, all good. The Rusty Fuzz is actually the only one I’ve played that I wasn’t so keen on

The USB jack is for power delivery: it can be used instead of the 9v jack.

That usb jack probably used for power, as this is an analog circuit. I saw two smd transistors on the top board, maybe a simple fuzz face design that's not biased properly, it sounds farty. That is a simple solder connection to power and complete the circuit, the circuit is laid out on two pcb's. Yes, it is smd, that's how they keep the cost down. This thing sounds like a cross between a tone bender mk1 and superfuzz, sweet. The price is ballooning on these, too bad.

I think the USB jack it's for power, since the USB jack was arround capacitors, transistors and an inductor I assume that it's a DC boost converter circuit (it takes the 5v input of the usb and increases the voltage up to ~9v). That's my theory, hope it helps!

Encouraged by the video I bought the cuvave fuzz but was not happy with it. Low end overshadows the mids and is extremely boomy. Sounds like a distorted and broken booster. Just bought a Biyang F7 and couldn't be happier with it. Perfect EHX Pi clone, plenty of power and tone range. Slightly more expensive (we'll twice the price as bought for £39) but well worth it!

The USB is the alternate power source option since battery is not available. You can power that line of pedals from your laptop or PC or phone charger or whatever.

That is a fantastic sounding fuzz. Dunno why I've held off watching your cheap fuzz demos. Obvs fuzzes contain about $2 worth of components wired together with 1940s electronics tech. So it's not surprising to me that some of these cheap fuzzes are just as good as some boutique ones. Definitely going to look at getting this.

Sounds like a silicon fuzz circuit, but still has the brassy sound of the original fuzz pedals. It's not too crunchy.

Man you can't really tell how good this fuzz is until you hear all the others. It reminds me a bit of some of the old Devi Ever fuzzes, like the US.

It is a re-branded Bi Buff Fuzz made by Mooer. Mooer does probably 20 other re-branded names. I documented 14 already.So if you find a Mooer you like and find the re-brand that is the cheapest and get that. Throwing in the chord is a typical gimmick. You have realize in China a Mom and Pop store might be 100 square feet. I am talking small time. But they can go online and make a couple of bucks a pedal and be happy. I recommend the Azur ...but the silver one. Killer and $20.00 USD & free delivery! Azur are made by Biyang who make world class pedals.

It’s kinda genius- they can use the control assembly with other effects boards. BTW it looks like this runs on 5V internally (the 9V is stepped down) so the USB is just an alternate power source.
