For over a year ago we successfully built a similar upgrade, "bit" more expensive with Ultegra RX derailleur, Garbaruk cage and pulley wheels. But to further extend the range, we ADDED a GRX front derailleur and a FSA Gossamer pro 2x crankset, 30-46, works just fine. (thus even reducing the q-factor to 151mm and extending only by 3mm the crank length to 155mm for the kid)

@@thecleaner81 I looked our order up, it was RD cage for Shimano GRX 11s, though I can't tell a difference by the websites pictures from the (general) Shimano 11s, or if the Di2 versions (GRX Di2 &, XT/XTR Di2) are differently shaped. Note; Manufacturer's website says 1x only - never mind, don't be afraid to try and check with your chainline. 2nd note: we tried at first with the standard GRX pulley wheels, but in the largest (and the smallest?, can't remember) cog the - unfortunately very nice but no bargain - oversized pulley wheels by Garbaruk were better, no chain rub at the cage.

Don't you have a lot of redundant/overlapping gears with a big cassette and 2x cranks?
@nikveldkamp8630
@nikveldkamp8630 8 месяцев назад
@@peterscott4183 theoretical probably but out in the field, it doesn't matter and nobody cares. Once the chain line gets too diagonal and the drivetrain too noisy (chainrub on FD and cogs), you don't have to, but usually simply switch rings. With those wide range cassettes you then basically have two 1x setups where you optimize the chainline. Bottom line, we don't shift in an mathematical sequential order if gearing, but how it makes sense in the terrain. Width of range without converting to 1x12 on Shimano HG was the goal and we have it. Once it gets really steep, you're in the small ring and that's it. The bike originally was equipped with a 32T 1x chainring with let the kid always be the slowest esp. in combo with the small wheels whe upsized a year later when he grew. So much better now, he's confident, reasonably quick among the older/bigger riders and foremost happy riding.

Great tutorial. I followed it and put a Shimano Deore CSM5100 11/51 on, after some tuning errors on my part, corrected on the 2nd ride, it works great, I don't notice any noise on the lowest gears. It feels faster/smoother than the stock Sunrace 11/42 though I've only a sample size of 1. Before my 1st ride I did add 2 links to the 116 HG701 I was running while the bike was in the stand as it was making noise in the lowest cogs, it also seemed the top pully had little contact. It did seem to reduce the noise in the stand but that could have been my initial tuning error, or because I was using Hope pully wheels rather than Shimano. Thank you, you've transformed my ride.

Hi! I've done this mod 2-3 months ago, while upgrading form 2x9 Sora that was as stock preset on my bike. I've done around 800km, had one bigger crash (bended hanger) and everything works perfect. I'm on 40 chain ring (Grx 800 with InPeak power meter) and Shimano 11-51 Deore 5100 cassette. I bought 138 link chain and shortened it to proper length. There's no strange sounds on hard gears (11T). On 51 ring there's little bit of cracking due to big chain crossing from front to back, but it's not much bigger than on my 1x12 Enduro bike, so for me it was perfect deal. If you'd like to have 1x system with good climbing potential - go for it! 😊

I've used this mod to allow me to run a Di2 RX817 with 11-42 and 48-32 Absolute Black Super Compact oval chainrings. Couldn't get enough chain tension with the standard cage on the 32 ring/smallest cog (Di2 doesn't allow you to engage the smallest 2 cogs anyway). But with this extended cage, I can get all gears (minus the 2 smallest) working fine. The RX817 is, in theory, 1x only but I found it works fine, it just doesn't do the semi-shift thing of moving cogs when you shift between big and small chainrings. The front derailleur still auto trims. I'm going to do the same mode to a second bike I have running 1x RX812. Many thanks.

This brakes my mind and decades of mixandmatching shimano derailleurs... Derailleur total capacity (read cage length) was never a limiting factor for bigger cassettes, but upper pulley offset is. 11sp XT uses GS cage for 1x11-46 and SGS for 2x11-42 - it is needed to make up the slack of front shifter, not to allow for a bigger cassette. If anything, a GS cage of deore 5100 is the right answer for 11-51 cassette. So if SGS from XT 8000 helps, you should have gotten by just fine with original GRX 812 GS, only being careful with chain length and B-tension. You can also see how much more movement of the cage is left in the smallest sprocket of the final build.

I recently changed to shorter cranks (on my 2x11 road bike) as I have some hip issues. However this has noticeably reduced my low end gearing (reduced leverage). My solution was to put a 42 cassette on and use a Roadlink DM to allow the Ultegra derailleur to accommodate the big sprocket. This works "okay", but overall the transmission is noisier, notchier and finnickier. I think this GRX 812 solution looks like a better way to go. Didn't really like the way the B-screw was sitting (although it was probably fine) so I got a goat link and the screw now sits flush on the tab - and the system works flawlessly. Curious how much larger of a cassette I could actually put back there now! I'm not in the 1x camp and don't think I ever will be. 2X is much better in my view.

Yes, he can benefit with longer chain. I'm also in the same setup. Not into 1x as it seems more limiting and I have 11-40 with only unwinding the B-scew.

Yea, this chain was stock length off the GRX 2x (11-32, 31/48) I think. An extra link would probably do it. New chain is already on the way.

I am also in the 2x camp. Tried and 11-42 cassete with the GRX810 (with direct mount goat) and it kind of worked, but shifting was not so nice. I didn't have a 40 cassete to try out ... currently running an 11-36 with 32/48 out front. Think is, I also do a bit of road riding on the bike, and the small cogs get used, on the larger cassettes, the 11 to 13 cog gap is very noticeable. I found out that the SUNRACE 11-36 cassete still has 11-12-13 on the smallest cogs, which is perfect for stretches of road, and then it gets bigger for offroad :)

Just throwing in my experience: running a 11-40 in the rear w/ a GRX815 Di2 derailleur, mounted to a 10-speed goatlink. Front is 46-30 AbsoluteBlack oval chainrings. Everything works great and I've got good range. My fitness is the determining factor before gearing in most instances.

I did something similar after crashing and rebuilding my 10-speed Di2 RD with a long cage and Wolf Tooth and 30-11, but couldn't quite get 32-11 to work. (Also, I believe that SRAM chain you have is made for them by KMC... oh and their X11EL is excellent).

Gracias

@thebikesauce I have an 11 speed SLX derailleur in my parts bin. I believe it would be the RD-M7000 long cage derailleur. I used it on an older hardtail. Will the cage plates from the RD-M7000 transfer over to the GRX 812 11spd derailleur?

GRX 812 also works reasonably well up to 46t with no modifications whatsoever (not even a goat link). That's what I've got on my commuter/gravel bike and it shifts smoothly enough for my liking.

So is changing from 2x11 grx to 1x11 as simple as changing the chainrings (not the crankset) and the rear deraileur (depending on cogs that will be installed)? I have the older grx 2x11 (600) and wanted to shift to 1x12 initially which meant I had to sell my 2x11 but if it is this simple then maybe i can go 1x11 instead

I'm wondering if one could use a GRX 810 derailleur cage on a GRX 812 body. I have an existing 2x drivetrain with an 810 that I'm trying to run an 11-40 cassette on. It works, sort of, but not well.

You could also buy a GRX RD-RX400 which already comes with the SGS cage and a very conservative claim of 41T max capacity and 36T max cog. I've used this on a 48-31 x 11-42 setup.

You my friend are an artist. However, even the SGS cage for M8000 is only rated to 46t. I know Shimano are conservative when it comes max large ring but are you sure this works with the 51t? I tried the Deore 46-11 with my Di2 GRX unmodded and although it worked, it rang like a bell and I had to ditch the idea. I intend to try this mod though as it looks like the M8000 cage will fit but I'd like to hear a follow up on how good or bad that 51t cog runs.

is it possible to use a different cage for this hack? Currently Shimano and all vendors across the US are listing the outer plate SGS cage has sold out/out of stock. The amazon link listed in the description is the only one that I can find that has it in stock at double the price. The only option left would be to cannibalize a brand new M8000 XT Derailleur itself which is readily available.

The rx400 is already a long cage. But you could mount a rx812 instead of rx400. Its the same cable pull ratio. Rx400 is only a downbranded rx800 derailleur
