$25 Fake Anime Figure vs $100 Real Anime Figure: Whats the Difference?

Can you guys spot the fake?
Today we are taking a look and comparing a couple anime figures. One is a legit figure I received a few weeks ago; another was a fake I ordered off of eBay last week for a quarter of the price of a new one. I wanted to make a video like this because I have never seen a fake figure in person, only through other youtubers videos and posts online.
As you guys will see in the video, I go over several of the clues that indicate to me why the fake figure is indeed a fake and the quality difference you will see between the fake and real figure. Overall the fake was somewhat convincing but lacked a lot of detail and was a pretty sad attempt at the real thing.
One last thing I did not touch on in the video was something that was brought to my attention a few months back regarding fake figures. Some have said that they use such cheap plastic/materials they can give off harmful toxins or fumes. I have not seen any scientific research to back this claim, just something to keep in mind. At the end of the day, my main problem with it is its just a copy of someone elses work, like cheating on a test.
Like the outro music? Check it out!

A) No shit $25 is cheaper than $100, but that doesn't answer my question. If you're struggling for money that you need to buy a bootleg, there are better things to be spending your money on than a static toy. B) No doubt there are some bootlegs that come close in quality, but they wouldn't be selling for that cheap if they went through all that effort to make a perfect recreation. Bootlegs are almost always inferior, not always to the same degree, but studying them for a moment always yields the corners that have been cut to minimise costs.

Just wanna say, if you are still young or cant really afford the expensive figures (like the ones costing 200-500 a piece), there is NO SHAME in buying a decent bootleg! Especially if it looks good. I have my bloodborne bootleg for about $40 since the original is out of stock and might cost me like $400- 600 on the aftermarket sellers. It still looks amazing since his face is in a mask anyway. Now ofc, if you can afford the figures that cost a bomb, go for it. But for ppl who want a set, of say 5 figures, with each costing $200ish? Dont sweat it if you need to resort to bootlegs.

I have to be completely honest as a figure collector myself, for $25 that’s not half bad. The colors are off and there’s paint smudge but..for the price I’d say it’s not bad. You should still support buying genuine figures though. Knock offs dont have that same feeling as receiving a genuine figure. You can feel all of the love and thought put into an authentic one :)
@w4rsp1te
@w4rsp1te 5 лет назад
I have bought a few cheap ones from Ebay and, as someone with no legit reference, they all look fine. Sure, up close you'll find some imperfections, but from a normal viewing distance they look perfectly good. I had always thought that they where "factory rejects", not quite good enough to clear quality control, but good enough to be sold straight from the factory for a heavily reduced fee. Actually, I don't think I would be willing to pay $200 for a figure that I can get (in an IMO only slightly worse condition) for $50. If I was more of a collector than maybe, but I just want to pay what I feel is a reasonable price for things. I feel like, in Japan, they will sell you a 10/10 product for top dollar, whilst over in China they'll sell you an 8/10 one for less that half the price. And, for me, that is just better value for money. Though I have to say that in the case of the one in the video, the Chinese one seems of a worse quality that any of the ones I got. (Except for 2 really bad ones, but they where only about $10, and still look passable from a distance.)

And for the most part the figure pose and design has lot of inconsistencies and irregularities, probably to avoid copyright issues. Oftentimes it's also manifested in packaging design & layout. Best to buy the original if your in it for investment, but if your tight on budget and just want it for display might as well get the affordable one like the Banpresto, Sega, Taito, Furyu etc.

I feel like the majority of the commenters are forgetting something very important. Sure, you could buy a figure at a 1/4th of the price, but literally none of the profit will go to the official creators. You're literally supporting people who steal from the original authors/studios of these animes. Anime production itself isn't a very profitable business; sure, they do get some sales from blu-ray/DVD sales after airing, but the main source of income for most of these franchises are merchandise and other such items. So what happens if you start purchasing bootleg items regularly? Simple, you remove the source of income for the franchise. That anime you really liked and wanted to have a second season? It might never have it if it's not profitable enough. The manga you like reading? The author might be considered "less popular" overall and could eventually have to end the series. It's totally reasonable that not everyone has $100 to spend on an anime figure; that's probably pretty common, but there are other ways to support the official creators without going for the most expensive type of merch there is. Keychains, clear folders, blu-ray/DVD, manga books, badges, nendoroids (and other such smaller type figures), etc. etc. The possibilities are numerous and plenty, so there's no excuse not to officially support them. "But I still can't afford legal merchandise!" Let me tell you about this great site called Mandarake. You can get officially licensed merch all the way down to 100 yen (~$1) depending on the popularity of the character/series and rarity of the item. For the smaller items, shipping should be very affordable and if you still can't afford that, go to hobby sites such as "myfigurecollection.net" and find people to split items with (i.e. you get your items sent together to save money) So stop supporting thieves.

You're assuming that everyone starts off by buying legitimate figures and then "switches sides" to buying bootlegs. You have no evidence for this. Personally, I never bought overpriced legit figures to begin with. I buy all of my figures secondhand or as bootlegs. When the prices of legit anime figures are so high, you bet your ass I'm going to support the secondary and bootleg markets instead (neither of which support the original companies). If the legitimate creators lowered their prices they could easily make up for the difference with volume and squash the bootleg market. Instead, they opt to keep prices high and produce in limited quantities. As such, a significant portion of the buyers opt to purchase bootlegs that cost a fraction of the price and are 80-90% identical. You also assume that all products and merchandise are available everywhere. Even with modern streaming services like Funimation and Crunchyroll, certain series, languages, or even dubs are unavailable based on location/region. Short of importing region specific DVD/Bluray players and purchasing complete Bluray/DVD series straight from Japan, people in certain locations have no option for watching an anime series outside of piracy. If neither Funimation nor Crunchyroll offer an anime in the format I wish to view and the alternative is a very expensive complete collection, you bet I'm going to watch an illegitimate stream somewhere. From your standpoint I'm taking away from the creators' profits, but the fact of the matter is: They were never going to receive my money to begin with since the product is out of my reach.

I've bought around five or six Chinese bootleg figures over the years and one of them was pretty dang close to the official one, the others minus one were not too bad, and the last one was hilariously bad. However, even with the one that was terrible, I contacted the ebay seller, showed them that the product I got didn't match their photos (they were using photos of the official figure) and they refunded me, apologized, and then updated the photos to reflect the actual product they were selling. Jungkooks Waifu I believe there is a happy medium between buying expensive scale figures and buying fake bootleg figures. Nenderoids, prize figures, sega, banpresto, buying used, using point systems, and so on are all ways to get legit figures at a prize often less than $50. @@Jellyfish.cos_ The other ones are Banpresto and Taito. I've never had any problems with these companies when I get my anime figures Sega Banpresto and Taito.

Thank you for the insight. I had to double check and make sure I didn't have a fake digivolving Tentomon figure lol. Due to accessibility issues I wouldn't knock people for buying fake figures. Most times there's a limited number that have been released and the price just keeps going up in the secondary market. You do not support the creators by purchasing resold items anyway, so if you want that character in your collection but don't have the money or can't find it sometimes you gotta go for it. I'd suggest investing in something lucrative to fund your hobby before saving just to buy a collectible, depending if you're planning on re-selling in the future or not. One thing I will say is if the figures were known to come broken like the one you're comparing in this video, I rather support the manufacturer of the fake. People put too much money and effort into collecting to have to worry about whether or not they'll receive what they paid for in one piece.

AnimePlz123, Thank you for the video my good sir. I'm trying to get my own collection up and running soon, and I appreciate you for pointing out the signs to look for in legitimacy. The paint job in the eyes were one of the easiest dead giveaways that I almost immediately noticed.

Figures are way to expensive for what they offer. It's true that the copy is not as good as the original but it sure as hell not a 75$ worth of difference. The original is as much of a rip off as the copy, its 100$ bro, they try to squeeze every penny they can out of the fans...

That's why i will probably never buy an anime figure. They are made from PVC, and that makes it feel like they should be cheap, but yet they are priced over $100, or a lot more than that, all the time. Im way more happy spending $150-$300 on Overwatch figures made from very strong and heavier material (poly-something, I forget what its made out of) and are by far better in almost all ways.

Understandable, but be warned that the Authors also get more money ratio per 1 figure sold then they do for selling thousand of mangas. So if you wanna support them "best", get a figure instead.

@@lrdalucardart I'm sorry but if their show/series is so popular that they have their figures copied then the last thing they need is "support". They are already set for life. But yes, if u want to support a small creator/artist in any way, I encourage that.

@@Screcy - Nope. Even the popular one's are not set for life, even if they are that's no excuse to buy a bootleg one. You also have to consider the original sculptor, graphic designer and other artist that brought that figure to the market, plus the people who invest in it's production so we can have such nice good things. Don't give money to hacks/thieves who never give any input whatsoever to the creation of the actual Figures, Anime or Manga that real artist worked hard to achieve. You either buy the original figure or you don't.

@@inisipisTV How old are you? You have a very gullible mentality of: some people are good/some people are evil. That's not how the world works. You're calling the people who make the copies criminals, you know that, them making these figure is not illegal right? Also the original sculptor, graphic designer and other artists are paid when making the figures and not paid by the amount of figures sold so the fact that u buy it doesn't support them in any way. You support the company and the people who own the rights to that figure. You avoid to talk about the main point of my comment, that the the original is way overpriced and I'm not saying that without thinking of the costs to make it or the other legal payments required. It's true that the only reason that the copies are so cheap is because they cut corners but again if a copy is 15$ and the original 100$ that's not because they needed the extra 85$ to cover the costs of the artist, shipment and the selling from one expediter to another. About 50% of that goes there, the rest is all huge profit for them. My hole point is that they can overprice their figures because fans will buy them anyway. The only reason they don't charge more is because then people will actually prefer to buy the cheap copies. They have people that calculate this stuff. Even wonder why a certain figure is 100 and not 110 or 90? It' because of it was 110 less people will buy it (so less profit) and if it was 90 even tho more people would buy it it still wouldn't be enough people to cover the 10 $ difference (do they still make a big profit? hell yeah but not the maximum profit they could make). They don't care about the artists and the rest of the people, they only see the $. Am I recommending all people to buy only bootleg figures? No. If you have the income to afford buying the original and care about the small details then I encourage you to buy it. But if you can't afford it then buy the fake one. I don't agree with the crazy hate towards buying bootleg figures. People will always buy originals and fakes and there is no problem in that. The only problem is selling a fake as an original with the same price.
