Damn bro I've been watching videos for four days and this has been hands down the best comparison and most informative video. You obviously have a wealth of skill and knowledge around this particular subject and I appreciate you sharing it.
A year later I just purchased a ddj 400, and it's awesome, it pretty much does everything high end controllers do at a fraction of the cost.... These entry level controllers really are jammed full of specifications. Awesome pioneer!
Absolutely agree. I'm a beginner, but it simply does everything I need. Switching occasionally to NXS2 players, when playing in a lab, is just smooth... The layout and gained familiarity with Rekordbox helps it a lot. And finally, when I screw up while mixing, I can hardly blame the controller, right ;-)
I use the DDJ 400 for drum and base and I only started DJing recently and it's such a nice and simple design making it easier to match up your BPM and the small amount of resistance on the tempo slider also allows you to be more accurate with your beat matching. 😁😁
I have a numark ns7II as my main controlller Just bought this controller and love it. For $250 you get full rekordbox . This a great back up for me and something to take to small gigs..
One of the best reviews on this controller on RU-vid. I upgraded to the ddj 400 from the RB and glad pioneer are adding the nexus layout to there rekordbox controllers which will make stepping up to club gear more flawless.
Was thinking the samething. This is so out of my level but willing to learn. As of now. Doing my homework on buying the right controller and speaker. I have my personal laptop. Question, do I need anything else?
@@DangerouslyActive if you want to become dj an mic could be something if you only want to play at home get an good set of monitors or if you want to do gigs don't get an too cheap pare of speakers an better set of speakers pays its self way faster
Bro, I find myself just watching your videos because of how detailed, honest, real, and real-life your opinions are. Fantastic job man. Just invested in an SZ2. Not because of the hype, but because where I am from, the big party promoters don't only respect your skill, but also your equipment. If I step out on a big stage with my SB, I will get laughs, and potentially lose out on future jobs.
Pay Ralph I don’t care if people laugh or don’t hire me. All I know is, despite it all, Pioneer DJ hired me. I still only use my SB3 at most gigs. I just got rid of the ones who would have given me a headache.
Thought I was crazy when I first noticed that Rekordbox DJ software doesn't translate a very tight scratch effect. Of course I assumed it was my xdj-rx2, and not the software, which gave a noticeably wobbly and softer sounding slow scratch. Thank you for discussing the taboo topic with an open mind.
One of the best, if not, THE BEST review and comparison I've witnessed on here. Definitely helped me with making my decision on what controller to go for as a beginner, thank you. :)
I've been really happy with the DDJ-400, it'll handle everything I do for a long time (mix DJ, house, pop, rap). This is a great video, really really great video; sweet spot combination of review and mini tutorial. Great job on this vid, been a subscriber for a while! I use the DDJ-400 with Rekordbox and it's worked great, nice having full feature set / license for a complete and competent software package right with the controller, thanks Pioneer!
This one is very good, check the second hand market as well. A mixer for some very cheap turntables I bought used is helping me distract, and giving me some sense of acomplishment on my slow progress. It is helping me with my mental health so much I want to buy a compact controller (more compact than this one) for using it outside of home, having it in my bag and so.
This is the same reason I bought my Ddj 200 and man is it a stress reliever only thing I don’t like is I can’t record my sets but I highly recommend it I’m here looking to upgrade good luck and hope everything gets better .
These ddj 400 go cheap as now, ddj rb on one of our sites here in Aussie for $60!!!! With a rekordbox license!!! Also seen sb2 for $100 awesome value!.... Definitely helps keep you sane, I also train Jiu jitsu as well- which is another good distraction- and a form of therapy tbh. Bless you! Be strong 🤙
Bee going through a rough patch and. Just started and I’m learning but it distracts me and definitely has been keeping my brain focused and happy enjoying my 400 so far
I would recommend the DDJ-400 to ALL beginners mostly because it comes with a fully-featured DJ software that you won't have to cough up additional cash to use, so from beginner to intermediate to advanced you could be using the same software and never have hidden costs. Another plus for the DDJ-400 is the layout, it's designed to be similar to club-standard CDJ/DJM set-ups, so if a beginner ever ends up getting serious and plays a venue, they will already be somewhat familiar with the club-standard equipment without having to relearn controls. All this, and it's the same price as the SB3. The only people I'd recommend a SB3 for are absolute bedroom DJ's, the type who just want to mix for fun, drop a mix on Soundcloud, or play small house parties but don't have plans to play at clubs. Even then, why not just use the 400 when it comes with, again, a FULLY-featured software.
well, I used my SB3 at a music festival once or twice. From a strictly hardware standpoint, the DAC held up quite adequately for a "bedroom only" piece. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-z4DP7Yog8LY.html
You know there's nothing like good old turntables and see DJs but I think you're right on the mark with this. They have these crazy big ass controllers and they just look ridiculous overtime. I'm not saying I wouldn't want one but some of them just get stupid and the little ones do everything you could ever want. Keep it Hood, keep it good
got mine yesterday after a long wait on backorder. absolutely love it. way better than my old mixtrack. love rekordbox aswell great that it's free with controller. I'm gona see how it works with traktor as I own pro 3.
I want you to review EVERYTHING i ever BUY!!! You have a gift. Ive never seen it before, but you speak openly, honestly, plainly, and with specificity. I dont know sh-t, but, i find comfort from your direction. (Ive just reach a total of about $10K on my music Studio. Now i have an old DJ system but its CD basedand Mp) Thus im looking at buying a new 1. Technically i should buy NI Traktor DJ stuff (own NI Komplete Ultimate 12 Collectors Edition, Maschine MK2, S88 Mk2 Keyboard) YET...Pioneer is the brand i aim. I spent way too much on on a CD DJ setup about 10yrs ago. Denon+ Numark. I want something i can use PRO, YET. not be PRO.
thanks for watching! Having you seen Pioneer DJ's latest Serato entry level DJ controller? Check it out here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GA3deDfFZtg.html
Rekordbox is the selling point really. In the UK club scene, regardless of genre, if you're going to play a set somewhere on their equipment (which is the norm, and it's usually 2-3 XDJs and a mixer) then being able to build a playllist in your home studio, export it onto a USB and know it'll plug in and work - then DDJ-400 all the way. Maybe I'm just biased because the DDJ-400 is what lives in MY house.
you funny you show me witch one is the most professional lol... and yours rise up 2 midi controller .........both less then one killo gram lol and let me guess a nice apple iphonex to go with it .... do the right show this new kids a pair of sl 1200 and a nice 2 way rane and they will lear the art not the programming you funny
Marcio Silva lol neither of these work with an iPhone 🤷🏽♂️. Also, as a person who used 1200s for 26 years, I don’t believe anyone needs to start on them unless they want to. It’s not a popular position, but I’m not here to help angry purists.
My question is: Can you set the jog wheel to scratch on the top and tempo nudge on the side (like a cdj)? It looked like that was what you were doing in the video.
15:55 "okay that was a little rough" O.o I'm waiting to open my new DDJ-400 for christmas and that whole Clarity mix is exactly the kinda style I want to be able to do!! Amazing
Got my first SB2 a few years ago when they first hit. I'm a regular gigging mobile, and use it multiple times a week. It got water damaged in November 2017, so I had to make a decision. After looking at the SB3, and the 400, and 1000 - I ended up going with another SB2. Partly because of the case I already own for it, but feature-wise, I couldn't see any real benefit to changing. Whichever one you pick, they are all solid choices.
Interesting. I've never seen anyone make this kind of comparison between different types of software. 17:00 It doesn't affect my style of DJing, but I wish more reviewers would highlight these quirks. Well done.
My SB3 system will arrive in one week. I do Reaction Videos and have to combat each Copyright Claim. I'm looking to add my music to my channel. When you scratch and mix over Run DMC etc, do you get claims? If Yes, what selection do you use to Dispute the claim? Will I be able to download any music into the system or just whatever Serato allows? Serato appears to be in Subscription services now.
TheBlueRage when you get a copyright claim, you don’t have to do anything. When I get a copyright strike I just remove the video. I rarely get copyright strikes.
@@priyonjoni Ok. Disputes work for me. I would say I win or get approve 90% of the time. If the Label does not respond in 30 Days, the Copyright claim is Removed. You have to check on the 30 Days expired as RU-vid will not alert you to that. They will alert you if granted permission or not granted. Most labels will still allow for the video to be played. Thanks. I will follow your beginners tutorial when my system arrives.
I honestly have probably experienced two copyright strikes from several of my videos in the last year. Usually, the more content you have, the less likely a copyright strike happens.
Excellent tutorial! I had to watch this a second time because so much info was covered! My conclusion coming from Traktor would be rekordbox ddj 400 as I mainly play House music! Thanks for sharing the knowledge!
Is there a way I can disable the scratch? I'm asking simply because I play house music and you know sometimes you get tipsy and end up touching the scratch part instead of the jog part.
Excellent video review! You covered details that most other channels wouldn't, especially that detail regarding sound resolution between the two programs when slow jogging/scratching. I've been out of the game for a while now, but I love keeping up with the new gear. Your great presentation just earned a new subscriber. Keep it movin'!
i have to say it.... you explained precisely what i hate about serato. and the thing that really pisses me off is its been years and they never bother to fix it. dang dem.
Incredible review and demo! Crazy what you did with the instrumental and acappela. DJs don't normally mix like that in South Africa but I'll be coming back to this video so I can practice that style of mixing with hopes that my sets will be more fun and to stand out, honestly.. Looking forward to checking out more of your videos and my purchase of the DDJ 400.. Promise I'll send you a shout out in my interviews.. Thank you bro ❤️ PS: The keyboard function is soooo sweet! Looking forward to that too..
I've been looking at this one and this is the best review I've seen yet. I'm also super new to this stuff and looking for an entry-level controller. Thanks very much, I just subbed.
Yeah bro same i just want to buy a ddj 400 for start out mix dirty prog this video just helped out alot and now im sure about buy it or not in a few months i will get it :D
I'm gonna be honest man... It doesn't have the best profile, I really wish those jogs were aluminum and thinner, larger. I hate the small headphone jack. I was just about to purchase a Reloop Beatmix 4. Because of it's better build profile that is critical for light and slim travelling. I am rather more experienced now so I'm very picky. BUT YOU KNOW WHAT ? I would be a damn fool not to buy this controller. It packs every killer effect and those pads reach the sky in terms on features. I HAVE, to buy this controller. Not because I want to. But because it is the right thing to do and that's a killer sales philosophy they built right there. You just can't pass on it. Thanks for the review my guy.
Really enjoyed your details explanation, I'm looking to promote music on radio streaming and adding some audio talk using shoutcast live radio software radio. I think the 400 suites my needs for mixing and highlighting new music releases for my audience listeners I think you did an excellent job on getting me to understand what I needed. Awesome
Man, You really know how to scratch.I currently use Virtual DJ 8 with a mouse. I have the ddj 400 and the only thing that is stopping me from using it full time is the rekordbox software's placement of cue points. It doesn't allow me to place them where I want them in a song while I'm dj'ing. I have seen other tutorials but they seem to use a 1 turntable view to set cue points. I don't have that option plus I just don't understand how come I place the begining of a beat or a verse to the start line and press cue or even hot cue and the software places a cue in a random sopt that i did not select. It's driving me crazy!!! Please help me.
Does the 400 is only compatible with rekordbox? Or it is also compatible with other softwares? I ask because I don’t know if I can use Spotify with rekordbox... thanks in advance
...i have a new ddj 400 and theres no mic input on rekordbox...i tried with dynamic mic it works on my soundcard scarlet but it wont work with ddj 400..any help??
Hi Pri yon Joni, my question is, how do I activate the sampler button on the pads to work? I get a reaction from all the other buttons, hot cue, beat loop, and beat jump, but nothing from the sampler pad button. I have the DDJ 400.
10:50 for rekordbox if you want scratching to sound better I think you gotta go to settings; controller; then mixer self tab; go to cross fader curve and crank it up all the way to the right
I saw an entry level pioneer controller the other day, it wasn’t pleasing to my eyes but thus looks great, even at twice the list price, still looks amazing. Great review.
I'm a beginner just doing it for fun. Purchased the DDJ-SR2 and love it but it has terrible issues with the jog wheels / grounding. So you never know how well the controller will work in an environment until you plug up.
It seems like a lot of people have bought this one, including myself :p can you make more tutorials using this particular dj controller? As well as other essential skills. Thanks a lot
I'd already bought one and I've been very happy but loved watching your video spo I've subbed! I'm glad I didn't go the Serato route - I didn't realise you had to upgrade and THEN get the key shift stuff!
Pri yon joni, Based on very useful information that you provided, I have decided to buy DDJ-400. Do you have any recommendation on pair of speakers that go well with it.Something which is not very expensive but still have powerful or club settings sound quality. Thanks in advance.
Do you know how many computers I can install Rekordbox on if I buy the DDJ400? I have both a MacBook and a desktop and I would like to use both with the controller. Thnx
I wanted to share my own views on the software comparison on the scratches. At least regarding higher speeds, on pitch or scratch, it's going to naturally create higher frequencies well above normal, probably even try out of our hearing range. IMO, it would make total sense to filter that out. I don't technically see it doing any damage to audio equipment, but it can create undesired harmonics, so filtering would be something I would have added into the software. (FYI those harmonics can clip compressors and limiters causing your volume to dip in an undesired way, so VERY smart idea.)Back in the old days on vinyl, speeding up would cause both speed and pitch to go up, where as with digital today, you can just control one, the other, or both. If music is typically made well within 20hz to 20k, raising the speed or pitch, or both, could send you well out of that range. ♥
So pioneer controllers are designed for pioneers rekordbox but they will work with serato. My question is two parts does it works with virtual dj pro and also if I have virtual on another controller will I need to pay to use it on a different contoller?
Hey man, thanks for the cool video. Does it bother you that you don't have output LEDs on the individual channels or auto gain pretty much solves that for you?
that weird wibbly sound you get when moving a controller platter really slowly is a result of how digital platters actually work. you've got an encoder that can only register a finite number of steps. normally the software will sort of smooth out these steps into a general "we're going this direction at this speed" but when you move slower than the smoothing algo can deal with, you start to hear each step as a jump forward. this isn't a problem exclusive to controllers either, DVS can have trouble at ultra low speeds (admittedly much lower than controllers, usually) if the bass response of the deck isn't great, as the tone part of the timecode can start to get attenuated.
in theory, a controller where the slow speed stepping is more noticeable should actually be better for ultra-fast platter movement, since there's less averaging happening that might otherwise smooth out those fast changes.
famitory not every jog wheel (not platter) behaves the same with different software as demonstrated in the video. We used the SB2’s same jog wheel, and the two different software behaved differently. The thing to take away is not simply “its digital that’s what happens”. Different software results in different sonic behavior due to its algorithm. That’s why I can do a blind test of someone scratching, and I can easily tell you which software they are using.
For a someone new to software DJing and controllers would you recommend the sb3 or the 400 ? With plans to upgrade to a 1000 when ready.?.. basically never used software before and want to learn one and stick to it... money not a issue.... Thank you for this demonstration...
