Thank you Gary for sharing this! To you guys disparaging what may turn out to be a carrousel movement not a tourbillon, (and you know who you are), get off your high horses and bugger off! (you know what channel your watching, right?) It serves the same purpose just a different approach and for under $300 quit whining. If you don't like them fine don't buy one, but don't complain about the availability presented to the the masses who are interested in an unusual movement that is similar to 5 to 6+ figure watches. To be clear and to educate those who don't know the carrousel, has its own interesting history. "When a Danish watch craftsman in England heard of Breguet’s 1801 tourbillon patent, he wanted to create something similar but different enough to avoid copying Breguet’s patent. He called his invention the “carrousel.” He wanted to also rotate the components by 360 degrees. However, he had to come up with a different method, and that is exactly what the carrousel does. When examined under a lit microscope next to the tourbillon, it is easy to see how the cage rotation is different in the carrousel. The pinion is behind the cage in the tourbillon design and features only one power train to supply power. With the carrousel design, there are two power trains. One power train connects to a small wheel instead of a pinion. Also, there is no fixed gear in the carrousel. There is extra power coming to the carrousel from a separate power train for the escapement." - WatchTime article

Carrousels & Tourbillons are both movements of significant complexity and European/American/Japanese examples only exist in the 6 figures+ range. For a fully functional Carrousel/Tourbillon to be under $300 definitely makes it affordable for a Budding Watch Enthusiast. Not sure what all that cynicism is about

Another fun fact The tourbillon was invented by breguet in 1801 as you say to counteract gravity’s affect on the hairspring. Bahne bonniksen invented the “carrousel” in 1892 which virtually does the same thing but gets around breguet’s patent cuz the carriage or “cage” of the mechanism is fixed to the 4th wheel unlike the tourbillon.

At 1k the Chinese Tourbs made no sense, but seeing them readily available in the 300's make them a real option for a curiosity piece. I've seen functional DOUBLE tourbillon from Merkur and other brands too for like 500 which is crazy

A tourbillion was built to counteract the affect of gravity on the watch to create a more accurate watch. The reason they are so expensive is they are extremely complicated and they require a large artistic ability to create them

The watch looks better than I would have expected to be honest, all nicely finished including the movement. Aventurine dial are slowly becoming more common recently. It would be nice to see a full review of this one. But the strap, it's just for the bin. I wonder what this looks like on some nice distressed brown strap?

@@AlexanderB. oh sorry mate, my bad. I apologise, I thought you actually liked it. I think this piece is aimed at those collectors who are pretty green. I'm not convinced that it is actually a tourbillion. I think it's dual driven and going by the track record of AliExpress watch companies I wouldn't be surprised if it is. I think the old adage "if it looks too good to be true then it probably is" applies here, not that I'd waste my money on a tourbillion anyway. Cheers mate.

I believe the movement is a Seagull tourbillion movement. and at this price, it is worth it. because actual seagull watches with a similar tourbillion costs around U$1980. but i am sure the build quality is much better than Aesop's

The only thing that REALLY irks me about these Seagull Toubillon movements is that the hands of the watch are not centered in the dial. Ever since I noticed that, I can’t unsee it, and my OCD just says “NO!”

My issue is, Chinese watches tend to be unreliable. Sure it looks real nice but you've only just got it. 6 months down the road? A year? What will it be like then. If it breaks after a year, £230 or not it's awful value if it breaks.

I’m not sure there is such a thing as Chinese watches these days…Swiss brands use Chinese manufacturing and Chinese brands use Japanese and Swiss movements…I’ve not experienced Chinese unreliability but I do get what you are saying, buying from AliExpress is not the same as buying from local jewellers.

Looks okay on the time grapher, but love to see it in at least 3 positions (dial up, 6 o-clock up and 9 o-clock up) to see how much the deviation is between those positions. 😉

It's a turbillon, it's suppose to function the same regardless of position. That's the whole purpose of the design.

There must a reason why there are no affordable Tourbillon Swiss made watches, except the Tag Heuer but still way above five figures watch... Not six figures, though, so might be affordable after all. :(

It's really a luxury thing, a watch dealer roman made a video on them, and said Swiss companies just don't want to make affordable turbillons. They usually only reserve them for 100k plus watches, bit because they're expensive, but because a turbillon should only be for those in a select group of of income earners. Much like the blued hands on watches, heat treating metal isn't very expensive, but is used a sign of luxury.

The reason they're so cheap is because they're essentially rejects. A proper tourbillon, even a Chinese one, sets you back about a grand. Which is still pretty damn cheap for what you're getting. Edit: It's not even a tourbillon, but a carousel.

The comments section will always fill with complimentary comments about a crap watch just because they want to type something that isn't overly critical, sometimes just because they want to type.,whereas those who are critical say nothing for fear of being seen as a troll The problem with that is some people could be influenced or tipped into buying shite that they'll end up resenting and be unable to flip. I think that when we see something that is very obviously inferior we should flag it and bring the standards back up above that bar. That will not be a functioning Tourbillon it’s just something spinning around for decoration. The movement is also made from a crushed 1971 ford escort.
