I shift on the fly all the time for 4 years but I'm running 1:1 pulley mud-mower. The transaxle break could be the locker. Have a look inside. One of the bigest causes of cracking case is twist. Make sure the transaxle cant flex/twist. The pulley ratio is pretty big, I would increase the transaxle pulley to 3 or 3.5 or larger. I think the engine might not stall, and may help against cracking the case also

Looks like you weren't using the clutch properly. Those transmissions are not synchronized in any way, so you need to drive it like a semi truck basically. That last pull where you slammed it into gear without the clutch definitely shredded it. Pop a new transaxle in and feather the clutch a little lighter on start out, and it should be fine. I have a similar ratio on my John Deere 180. And there is definitely a carburation issue. It sounded out of whack when you were revving it. Check to see if the fuel tank is venting properly and that you have good flow to the carb. Gravity fed tanks are finicky. Might have to get a fuel pump for it. Looking good though! Definitely a fun build. I've been following along. Can't wait to see her rip!

Love the look of the slammed tractor, and get the urge to build one my self. I just have one question about the transmition blowing up.... I have a mowert tractor and you never shift at speed. Just put it in in gear 1-6 or 7 of how many ther is and away you go.... the higher gear the higher speed but you never have to shift during the ride..... that might be the same with yours and trying to shift it as a car might make it go bang ;)

It looked like you had the governor arm hooked up through the throttle linkage. If so it will pull the throttle back when you speed up. Or it's pulling your choke shut eaither way don't hook anything to that arm that sticks out of the block

You pulley ratio is terrible. Change the motor pulley to a 7 or a 8" and the transaxle pulley to a 3 or 4". Maybe get a centrifugal clutch, it will be easier on the transmission, you dont want a 1:1 ratio with a trans axle

I definitely agree the motors to small for that ratio but in my opinion it should still be drive able I had a 5hp Honda on one with a 6-2 and it was fine I think part of your issue is the shifters so tall and has so much leverage if it doesn’t want to go in to gear you can easily force it into gear without realizing then causing the gears to blow apart when they don’t mesh right because there’s so much leverage there also I think you may be going straight for to many gears as I said before I had a 5 horse Honda on one I had to shift it like a car 1-2-3-4-5-6 I got a 20hp vtwin now and it’s not so bad but I would suggest maybe shortening that shifter so you can feel if it’s binding up and prevent from slamming it into a gear it doesn’t want that and it’ll be much easier to feel the gears you’re selecting
@goodtimesgarage
@goodtimesgarage 5 месяцев назад
I think you’re right there is a lot of leverage on that shifter. Putting another transaxle in soon and going to go to a smaller ratio.

sucks the rear end blew, but i also see a major flaw. The aluminum pullies like to break, they are made for fractional horsepower. So with the load they are under and the engine, it may break. The engine may be to weak to power that too, causing it to not want to run. Im running a 19.5 twin with a 6 and a 2, and it doesn't have enough power still.
@goodtimesgarage

I have seen snapper mowers that would do wheelies totally stock so I am thinking that axle was weak and you may need to use a different one. However I believe those snappers I am talking about had like a 3 speed with a chain drive to the actual axle that drove the tires. So the engine was vertical shaft into the trans which made it horizontal output to the axle.

As far as the engine goes... I think every lawn mower is set up without a gas pedal... So if you want to run a gas pedal you may need a different carb. As far as the trans goes you could take that one apart to see if its fixable. But I'd say maybe look at getting a torque converter kit if it's still a problem after the motor squared away. Good video tho.. It's good to see real people building things. An update video to get your thoughts on what's going on and possible solutions would be a good watch.

i think that the reason your transaxle broke is simply that it is not designed to shift between gears at speed. If it is the same as every other 6 speed transaxle i have ever run into, they tend to do that if you speed it up (input speed increase) . let me know if this is different inside, but it should just be 2 or 4 shift keys on a shaft inside that engage the gears. If you try to change gear at speed, the fact that the gears are spinning at different speeds on the shaft is going to cause a lot of stress on those keys. It looked like in the one clip near the end, you may have bumped it into second gear by accident when you launched (this would explain your wheelie). In my experience, the shift keys will either break (the case shouldn't crack from this) or the gear that you engaged broke and cracked the case. Maybe it was too much input speed on the bearing for the input shaft and the stress on the bearing transfered to the case and cracked it? Just a couple of things that i ran into with mine somewhere around 8500 rpm on the input shaft of the transaxle. see if this link works for a photo, but this unit should be where your problem is. if the link doesn't work, let me know what trans it is and I can help you find out if this is the same style as I tend to blow up on my racing mowers! have a good day! www.bing.com/images/search?view=detailV2&ccid=VF1%2bvCxw&id=D4EBB80D53FFE126BABA7681E9A66502F05FB9E6&thid=OIP.VF1-vCxwbrqRR6HBBzOSBQAAAA&mediaurl=https%3a%2f%2fi.ebayimg.com%2fimages%2fg%2f19EAAOSwETVfxoML%2fs-l300.jpg&cdnurl=https%3a%2f%2fth.bing.com%2fth%2fid%2fR.545d7ebc2c706eba9147a1c107339205%3frik%3d5rlf8AJlpumBdg%26pid%3dImgRaw%26r%3d0&exph=197&expw=300&q=peerless+930+broken+gear&simid=608037193661884837&FORM=IRPRST&ck=B9E9CE4EF40FA100A9B1B82D9A42C62D&selectedIndex=10&itb=0

@Smallenginesgalore
@Smallenginesgalore 5 месяцев назад
@@goodtimesgarage dude, as long as you don't shift while you move, those transaxles should last. I only say this because you are not running a big twin cylinder engine that would put out enough torque to bust that transaxle into a million pieces with the grip of launching on paved road. If I were to suggest a gear ratio for you, it would be either a 5 or 6 inch pulley on the engine with your existing rear pulley. Have fun!
@Smallenginesgalore
@Smallenginesgalore 5 месяцев назад
@@goodtimesgarage if I were to suggest a pulley ratio for you it would be a 5.5 in the front with your current pulley in the back or a 4 on your transaxle with the 10 on your engine. Hopefully your build goes well for you!🤞
