And yes yes yes I KNOW! FX30 would be a great addition. I've got two pre-ordered and plan on making a lot of content on them. So stoked for those little fellas!
Wonderful job, Caleb. I don't even think you need to spend that much. A) If you're controlling your lighting, do you really need to shoot 10-bit video? If not, you can find an even more affordable camera like my Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II on the used market. The camera can be had for under $500, the video autofocus is reliable, and Micro Four Thirds lenses can be really inexpensive as well. I own the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 in EF mount and just use it with the Viltrox EF-M2 speedbooster. B) Do you really need such expensive lights? I have a pair of LED video lights with softboxes that I bought from Amazon for under $100. I think they're perfect. I love your channel, but I also love Nigel Barros's channel...he is all about making great content on tiny budgets.
I needed this video 2 months ago... BEFORE I bought all the wrong stuff... in bulk. This video trumps the hundreds of others I watched in preparation for my regrettable foray into studio building.
2:08 something I learned after using this tripod (btw like you said, its the tallest max height tripod for its price range which is why I am using it) the stops in the legs for the segments are pretty fragile so best to use in a studio setting and not back and forth between setups.
As usual, great content Caleb. Especially showing how easily lighting can be modified. If there's one thing I've learned from you, it's that lighting is KING! Cheers man. :)
This is so excellent, thanks for doing this! I love working with available light for photography but when I get asked to do something where I'm setting up the lighting I have no clue. Definitely going to be grabbing some of the things you mentioned here.
If you are new to filmmaking or content creation, you hit the jackpot with Caleb. I have been at this for about 6 years now and one of these videos will reduce that 6 years of knowledge into 7 minutes. Enjoy and good luck!!!
While the R7 is nice, I would recommend the Panasonic S5 Full Frame for film shooters. Maybe not a great blogging camera, but if you're doing a short film, this gets you full frame on a budget and looks fantastic. Pair it up with an Atomos, and you're getting 5.9K Pro Res RAW recording, too.
Have been looking for some audio suggestions that won’t break the bank and that stand with the extender connection will work perfect for a couple projects I have in mind! Thank you!! Also perfect for quick set ups, and don’t have to mess with syncing external audio!
Love these videos. They really help in navigating the modern sea of shooting gear. Though if you don't mind me saying- This could've been a couple minutes longer. I understand there are algorithms and analytics to consider, but these blew by so fast that I had to rewind a few times just to register them, let alone retain them. Let the video be a video ya know? Instead of just a list of recommended shopping links.
Thank you for this video! I’ve been looking to upgrade my mic and key light for a while! I’m going to research this keylight more and as for mic…I’m moving away from Rode for sure 😭
If your shooting indoors with controlled lighting, honestly go with a used sony a6000 for 350$. Add a sigma 16mm or 30mm (depending on your need) for 300$ and spend the last 250$ on lighting. I.e. a cheap viltrox led panel and stand (100$ total), with a 20$ 5-in-1 reflector. Add a aputure amaran mc tiny rgb light for 80$ and your golden. Then you can easily upgrade lenses and camera bodies when needed. ✌️
Love your videos 🙌 learn so much and it’s always so clear. Looking forward to the next one using the same setup. I’ve always wanted to shoot in log but never understood how. I have an older canon DLSR - a video on log would be awesome!
Always amazing, I especially appreciated the settings used on the camera. The knowledge and expertise that you share is a game changer for so many of us, thanks Caleb
Now that I see a cheap 99$ option to get other lenses with a R7 might be a decent option again. I'm looking to make a big step from my D3200 but after latest canon news I was bit confused
Great video! Do you have an alternative to the R7? It's a great camera but I'm concerned about spending money on Canon rn because of the whole 3rd party lens thing. I've not seen another hybrid camera with this great a video spec for this price (haven't seen many with 10 bit colour for example)!
Nice one Caleb!! Thanks for the effort! I have all the set that you’ve mentioned in the video except the camera and the lens (I’m switching cameras) 😂 I was planing on getting the Panasonic s5, but now looks like the r7 is a solid option as well. Is the s5´s image quality superior than the r7? I don’t actually care about the autofocus,
You're welcome friend! As a wedding videographer first I do care about AF, so I'm going R7! But the S5 was on my cart for over a year, amazing camera for everything else!
This is a fantastic setup for the price. However, I have 2 issues with it, which requires more money. Obviously not the point of the video, but it's things that scare me as a content creator. 1. I'd recommend a back-up mic with a separate recorder, especially if you don't have anyone to monitor it. I made that mistake one time, even though I had levels, the cam didn't register it, and now I have PTSD. 2. Don't use autofocus. Lock it down. I've had clients send me footage with this same exact camera and the focus was all over the place to the point where it was almost unusable. These are must-haves to save major potential headaches. Otherwise, what you get for this budget is pretty damn good.
Just recording the audio seperately and not in camera will give a much more reliable setup. Yes, if you're sitting in one spot anyways, manual focus, always! It's super weird if the focus moves even just slightly, when it doesn't need to
For the table-top video I would like to do a request. I'm trying to do some recordings of wood and metal working on a table. All the systems that I found to put the camera on top are arms that are fixed to the table and as you can imagine a table with that kind of work vibrates and even moves. Probably due to my lack of words to know what to search but is there any arm like the ones for mics but that is capable of holding a camera?
Hey Caleb! Love your channel. I'm just wondering if you have any advice on the best on-camera led light for use as a sun gun - basically the most output in the smallest form factor that can be camera-mounted?
Didn’t know that we now also need to beep the number 45😉😂 I still see a lot of YTbers using the Sigma lens also on mft which I find odd as there are better lighter native options?
This is great! Yet another great video that’s helpful for everyone!!! Much appreciated! Quick question, any real benefit with going with a 200d vs 100d in this setup? Thanks in advance
Was curious of your opinion here, just got my FX30 recently and I'm planning to use it for streaming as one of its purposes. Would you recommend setting the quality to 4k and then downscaling it to 1080p through obs or should I set it to 1080p and just keep my settings as is within obs? I know the difference will likely be minimal, but still wanted to get your take here
A Fantastic Video As Always! Quick question, the video tripod model that you have is the VT-300 which costs 80 bucks. But in the description the VT-350 model is linked which costs 100 bucks. Is there A difference between the two models?
Hey bud. So I just have the Sony a6000 will any of your Sony Guides work for me to get the most out of my camera? I also have a GoPro Hero 8 Black, iPhone 13 Max Pro and Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5g. I'm just looking to do a permanent kind of setup to shoot myself on camera for training and marketing vids. My audience is Live Theater Owners / Producers so they're definitely creatives. It needs to look great. Any direction /advice is appreciated
If the soft box is around 1m away from the face, can you get away with a 60cm softbox? - I'm a bit limited with space! - also, is something like an ML60 enough for a key light with a setup like this or would you really go with 100W?
Very helpful video! Thanks! I got the amaran 100d after watching your review video. Do you have any recommendations for a back light to set the subject apart from the background? I'm looking for a light that's brighter than using a foam board.
