$360M Wasted on China’s ‘Most Advanced’ Tram, Dismantled Under 3 Years, Derailed in 3 Days

Recently, the demolition of a tram section in Zhuhai city has sparked heated discussions online. This 8.89-kilometer-long tram, with a total investment of 2.6 billion yuan (about 360 million USD), began operations in June 2017. After more than three years of service, it was suspended in January 2021 due to an accident and has not operated since. Following over three years of debate over whether to demolish it, on May 7, the Zhuhai city government announced the termination of the tram's operation and the dismantling of its facilities and equipment.
This means that the section, once touted as the world's most advanced tram, has become the first modern tram project in China to be dismantled after being put into service. This construction and subsequent demolition, involving approximately 3 billion yuan in public investment, has resulted in significant waste, drawing public discontent.

@@rafael_lana Well the original test track in Naples apparently worked well, but it was only a short 400m strip. That being said, CRRC licensed and built this. More importantly, it looks like substantial sections of this route used the ground based power system instead of catenary which really isn't a good idea. This type of power system really needs to be limited to a few sections in areas of high density where wires just wouldn't fit in. Even if it worked perfectly, this is more expensive than catenaries so its use should be limited.

Trams or streetcars have been successuly operating in Western cities for over 200 years, with electrified trams been developed in Germany since 1881. This is not new mass transit technology. A tram route roughly the same length was completed in 4 years in my home city in Finland. Actual plans and voting for the city project took 10 years but construction was actually completed slightly ahead of time, from 2017 to 2021. Been running for 3 years now and taking a lot of congestion from local bus transits away. Also cleared up a lot of confusing traffic from the city centre. So a very similar tram story to this one, except it was a complete success. Only major stop for the tram was once this year in November when a freak blizzard stuffed the tracks full of snow and had to be cleared up.

I wouldnt be surprised if there wasd some bribery of officials involved in the construction of this specific tram line resulting in a shoddy construction work. Also it might be that the feasibility studies werent really done properly resulting in a tram line that didnt draw passengers in. This is a problem in any state that has a one party system since the only way to control this stuff is from inside the party itself. This makes it hard to root bribery out if only the high ranking party members can change things since they might be involved themselves in schemes like these.

So this was a bad idea. Still they built it, ran it and removed it in three years. In 20 years China has built 45,000 kms of high speed rail. In California over a similar period of time they have managed to start work on 120 miles of HSR track. China builds trains no one uses to areas of little demand and California has yet to run a train. There's probably over 25 million people that would be served by this line. This makes proposals for a 300 mile line connecting Portland, Seattle and Vancouver (the Vancouver to Vancouver + Line?) a pie in the sky fantasy.

Should have just put in a HyperLoop, waste some real money. Like US taxpayers did through Federal Grants, because everyone thinks (thought?) Elon Musk is a god genius here to save mankind.

Any educated person knows that Elon musk just buys promising projects and kills them once he gets his hands on them, he is not smart at all, just an uber capitalist who got his money from his families blood diamonds and apartheid. Similar to Thomas Edison who slowed down development by purchasing patents and prevented others from making real progress.

The only way to make public transportation profitable is to ban private cars. This can make it inconvenient for a lot of people and slows down productive people at their jobs.Maybe if every other day people could drive and alternate on trains the next. more people would ride a tram but it would kill efficency. Cities all over the world lose money with public transportation and must be subsidized by government through real estate taxes, city taxes on wages and central government income taxes. If people were forced to ride them the only good thing would be less air pollution. I bet rich people in China pay less taxes than the rich in the West. Just my guess.

This reminds me of the LRT in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia which was built by China. then Ethiopia and China are proud that they are making progress?🤣. But the LRT route has problems due to lack of electricity supply🤣. for countries like Africa it is very ridiculous when they force the operation of electric trains. because the electricity supply in poor countries is often not on 24 hours and is uneven. Moreover, electric trains are considered wasteful of electricity/energy for poor countries. which causes only half of the train series to operate. This is with operational costs that are too high to the point that the Ethiopian government has to go into debt again to cover operational costs at a loss. Very sad, that Ethiopia has been cheated by China for its inefficient infrastructure🤣. even though they can make public transportation that is cheaper in terms of development costs and cheaper operationally, namely BRT as implemented in Bogota, Colombia, Jakarta, Indonesia and Salvador, Brazil.

HSR , cool at what cost ? Needing a reserved seat is extra in Taiwan . Can get busy . If you are almost in a rush :-) Regular rail is way cheaper /km travelled .

And the amount of total debt interest being paid and with annual operating costs far, far exceeding revenue it is a money pit bleeding losses. It made sense for a few high usage lines, but overall it doesn't. It sure looks pretty though.

Trams , my gran was a conductor on them , around 1930 in Birmingham UK . You still had to get to the main hub , not many outlying stations . 100 years later :-) Make them economical . And well run . Seem good in a few cities in europe .

Urban central planners have always plugged mass transit and high density living. The people who live there must be content with such manipulation. No factories, no jobs, but lots of government. And gotta keep those LFGC construction projects moving...CCP jobs depend on that. Puurfect.
