I purchased this14 foot alloy boat with a 30 hp outboard motor $400. It had been sitting in a barn for many years so will need a lot of repairs. Lets see if it runs and floats. Part 2 here - • Ocean Testing the Rest...
Your son will grow up with the knowledge that anything is possible regarding mechanical contrivances, because you are simply outstanding with discarded and abandoned machines. It bouys my spirit to think that as I get older, those things that I held dear and worked with were still held in regard and still preformed as designed. It is a metaphor for life, and very good viewing on youtube.
That was so satisfying! Clean it out immediately, inspect everything, replace what needs replacing, properly fix electrical issues, including wire loom, grease and lubricate everything. I've seen too many "will it run" videos where all they care about is short-term functioning, not even cleaning things out.
It's like spending time with your best mate as you fix stuff. Since I live in a different country to my mates you fill a void in my life. Thanks. Now pass me a beer and show me that again.
Watching you is always good for learning about a different & better way of fixing the problem. Your children have the best teacher to learn from, I wish I had a Dad like you..
Nice little run-a-bout you've got there, Marty. It will be great to use for close to shore fishing trips and taking the boat out to get some fresh air and maybe do a little coastline exploring. I enjoyed the video on the process of getting the boat, motor, and trailer back in shape.
i love how unimpressed your son was when you got it running well lol, he was like yep I expect nothing less from you dad, lets get this in the water hahahah.
Hi Marty, I’m always impressed with you. If you’re not mechanically minded you always explain what you are doing and I think it’s fantastic. Specially when you’ve got your son with you and he’s always learning all the time and you’re teaching the viewers of your RU-vid keep up the good work always appreciate your videos cliff from Queensland Australia. We’re on the big island
What a sweet deal! Great video demonstrating how to reuse stuff that would otherwise be junked. And what a great learning video for small boat owners! Brilliant
Anutha great vid, nice ta See ya showing and explaining things to ur kids, great education fir them. Always enjoy your vids, plis makes me just a wee bit homesick.
love this guy,, like I say, i know nothing about machinery but I could listen and watch this guy all day long,,, he's so calm about what he does , unbelievably knowledgable and makes his craft so incredibly interesting,,, you have one hell of a lifestyle and so very lucky 👍👍👍👍
Another good one, Marty. You have some right friendly hens, but watch that they don't eat your small parts. Nice seeing the kids, especially watching your boy helping out.
Nice find. I've got a 25 hp Mariner of similar vintage. Mines an 84 model. That 30 hp looks like it pulls over a lot easier than mine, but mine has never given me problems and starts right up every spring after sitting all winter for the last 12 years in a row. I'm just glad it has electric start. All I do is clean the fuel filter, drain the fuel in the winter, and change the impeller, spark plugs, and gear oil every few years. Good motors and yes the trim tab is the anode.
As a man who's all things wheels especially motorcycles, boat 2 strokes are a piece of work and in the past shoehorned in to race bikes with great success
Nice cleanup/restoration job! Seeing the buildup of mold and moss being pressure washed off is quite enjoyable. Kind of like an eraser for years of weathering.
It is always good to see an old boat getting a new life! Alloy boats were never very popular over here in the UK or Ireland. You were spot on with the annode on the motor. Off to the test run now...
As for the tyres if they're not too badly cracked I'd drop the pressure to 10-15psi and run them for a mile or 2 and then pump them up to 50+psi preferably with the weight off and let them cool, works a trick for cars that have been lying up.
It's an awesome Wednesday morning when I find a new MartyT episode in my feed. He always comes up with a new bit of something or another to fix up. This one was a really good find. It's amazing how fast his boy is growing up as we follow Marty's adventures fixing up others castor's. Won't be long till he's Dad's number one right hand man wrenching right beside Marty. Finding his own gems in need of fixin'.
Best boats you can own. Inexpensive, easy to maintain, tow, store and the v can handle a lot of water for its size. I have a old 14ft Monarch v with a 1998 15 hp outboard. Holds 4 ppl and is more fun / less worry and expense per $ than any other boat I have owned. I built a frame that holds a cover over the boat and have a dolly that lets me keep the outboard in the garage.
Hey Marty, that corrosion is due to the leg not being electrically tied to the lower cowling/housing. From factory there should be a braided steel wire with round crimp terminals tying the leg to the rest of the engine across that gap where you disconnected the shifter rod to remove the leg.
First time I've seen anyone test a thermostat on YT prior to installing it. Always a CYA procedure we were taught to guarantee integrity... That motor runs sweet...
Appreciate the thoroughness in your restoration. Hoping one day you might have a sandblaster for dealing with cleaning parts. Would love to see a video of having the windscreen polished with a before and after of visibility. :)
Your First Mate is doing a great job. A strip of aluminum glued along the base of the windshield. To add strength. Your skill of repairing is only match to skill of finding equipment. Be it has tires, tracks or floats.👍🏻🥝
What Marty teaches is what happens when you don't take care of equipment, how to repair damage and how to care for it properly. Then, he takes the wonderful equipment and uses it to take care of his family and property. Schools should use his videos to teach self-reliance.
Easily worth the $400. Engine turns over, includes trailer with turning hubs and the best part, the roof over the helm!! Priceless!! You'll be able to camp out in it! 😃😁👍
Ah, the young fella and a proper “summer cut “ or rather winter cut on your side of the world! Another awesome video. Where do you find these gems? I can see it now, Marty’s Marina popping up soon. That has the Mrs written all over it. What a sweet little boat. Well done to you and the lad. Take care and thanks for posting.
Whoever owned it took pretty good care of it before they stopped using it. Nice boat. I've never seen a hull design like that. Made for big waves? Thanks for the video.
Sweet little Tinny...... perfect for a Boy's first boat! Think he might be a little young yet for solo missions, but I see an exciting future exploring on the water for this young man?
Bitumen paint is really good to stop end grain cracking on logs that you may want to store for awhile before milling. There are specialty latex based products but about these parts it is so ridiculously expensive I went searching for an alternative and found it. Water based bitumen paint is excellent. It mixes with the water coming out of the wood. In fact the water based bitumen paint is so good for end grain sealing, the solvent based bitumen paint I got as a trail at the same time is still in unopened tins.
Mariner outboards were a joint venture between Mercury Marine and Yamaha. In the beginning 60 hp and under were made by Yamaha and 70 hp and up were Mercury, later Mercury made the whole line of outboards. You didn't show greasing the drive shaft splines or removing the prop and greasing those splines although you may have done that during your maintenance.👍👍
