Listening to Marc talk about the physics behind how the watch makes the frequency you can really tell he has a background in engineering. Congratulations on your new watch! Great video as always.
I think it's just such a positive, happy, reminder not to take this hobby (or life) too seriously. I absolutely love it and I don't understand the people that talk down about it or belittle it. Such a great watch and your video was wonderful. Thanks for a great ending to a Friday workday.
This was my third CW and I also got the sky blue dial (so, clearly, you have excellent taste!). I got it on the bracelet but had a light grey leather strap made for it and I love the watch. The hourly chime is great, but I just love the dial and design of this. Congratulations on your new watch.
So glad you like your CW. I have a C63 Sealander, it's become my most worn watch these days, really nice in blue on the bracelet. I just wish they'd put a cosc movement in it!
Beautiful, the slenderness and propositions are absolutely phenomenal. I like how tall it is. The rooster is a nice touch. I personally like how its a green and red color combination. I gotta get myself one of those jumbo sriracha bottles. Oh yeah nice watch too.
I was one that had no interest in the Bel Canto when it was released (but am a huge CW fan). The BC is slowly winning me over, its very well done and the complication is fun. I've come to really like the dial design with the fork motif and bird hammer mechanism, it's beautifully thought out and so well executed. I don't see myself owning one in the future, but I've come to respect and appreciate it. Love what you do and congrats on the New Watch Alert!
Congratulations man! I had to wait for a Serica 5303 for a couple of months when they came out, and I am waiting for a Kurono Tokyo Reiwa since may, and that's agonising enough already. So I can do nothing but applaud your patience during a fifteen month wait. Happy to hear it was worth it. The Bel Canto might not be my style exactly but it is a cracking watch, one that both you and Christopher Ward's team can be proud of. This is totally unique, not just in its price range, but in many other senses of the word. Wear it in good health.
Man, I'm glad you like it. I'm aware every watch reviewer and their dog have been singing the praise of the "Beau chant" (why not a bit of French, after all) since its release, but $ 4 000 for a watch that you struggle to read the time from and that just greets you with a single "ding" each hour ? I don't know.... A bit like the Tudor Black Bay 58, let's see how it behaves on the second hand market in 3 or 4 years, when many buyers will have owned it for a while.
My guess is that it will keep its prestige and price, since it hits a certain unique spot. Especially if CW eventually stops making more and they become rare. But then again who cares, let's enjoy it while we love it.
The first batch are still close to double their retail price on the second hand market. The new colours are selling used for a smaller markup over new despite unlimited supply, but still it's cheaper to order new and wait. So long as supply is slow, almost made to order, I don't see a price crash anytime soon, even if prices normalise a little. If it's refreshed in a few years and there's something fresher on the scene... Probably, but also probably not in bargain territory either. I can imagine CW changing out the colours once orders drop to boost sales, even a new blue. Which should keep used values from dropping too much. And keeping supply low and slow for prestige pieces is good for the brand. Bargain basement used watches will cheapen the brand, and it is clear it is moving up market and beyond divers. Reversos next? 😅 I think the one I ordered, the deep red one, might buck that trend, as while it is visually stunning, it is a Collab piece. There's a few of those now, and I do feel they make those pieces less of a zeitgeist piece of watch culture and a bit more ... fashion, which don't hold value as well usually. Still, I bought it for me because I love it and that's all that matters. That will eventually be the cheapest way in, in a few years from now. Some oddball Collab piece someone gets bored with!
I have had my purple Bel Canto with bracelet for a few months. Pros: visually stunning, and I am happy with the color, very accurate. Cons: chime is quite faint, dial is hard to read at a glance, tools-free adjustment does not budge for me (it happens to fit me as is).
This watch is so you, Marc. From the color to what it stands for (value engineering). Also the different camera angles really do add value. Thanks for always trying to up the production.
Been a CW fan since my entry into watche collecting about a dozen years ago. Their quality and price point, helped me ease into the hobby. The Bel Canto, is everything the hype says. It's an amazing piece and is a permanent entry into the collection.
I've been thinning out and refining my collection over the last couple of years, and while my SKX 007 and even more so 013 are locked in, I have added a couple Christopher Ward watches. The C63 GMT and C63 Sealander, and I have really liked both the watches and the company. But I think on these less expensive ($1k - $1.5k) watches, had to pay import duties, but still a great deal. Love your Bel Canto, that light blue dial is a beauty!
@@islandwatch Forgot to mention, I have Islander bracelets on the SKX 007 and 013, and especially on the 013 it is what makes it one of my favorite watches.
Hi Marc, congrats! Cool watch. Love seeing your reviews. Been a long time follower. I remember you blue seiko gmt and blue Daytona. 2 beauties. Dust em off and do them again! 😊
My Bel Canto was delivered in March. It is fantastic. I got the black dial because I think it shows off the architecture of the face the best, and I like the red bird's beak. The chime is faint, but because it is so clear it is remarkably noticeable when it goes off. You'd think that a watch like this would be more suited for a leather strap, but it is a large watch and I found that the metal bracelet, which is wonderful, provides a better balance. Great watch.
This will likely mean nothing to non-Brits and even young Brits but the gong reminded me of the gong when the lift/elevator in "Are you being served" reached the selected floor.
I really enjoyed your assessment. I have a Rosa version on a strap. Took 10 months from order to delivery. Lovely piece. I do wish their Management put some additional resources into getting productions better sorted out and being able to communicate reliable information.
Congrats on the acquisition. I think all mechanical watches are engineering pieces of art (which is the primary reason I like them), but this takes it up a notch. Thanks for showing us the watch!
I would say primarily depends on the speed of sound in the chosen metal (which depends on the bulk modulus and density, iirc), the length of the gong, and the the boundary conditions (fixed one end). Everything else will alter the timbre of the bell. Lovely watch, I never noticed it was a little bird!
It's a beautiful watch Marc. I love the color you chose as well. I own a Christopher Ward watch in bronze. It's one of the nicest pieces in my collection.
I am pretty sure the two lengths of the bell are resonating with eachother so it will be louder and a more persistent tone as they resonate with eachother like a tuning fork, rather than the full length vibrating freely which would be a lower note without the benefits of resonance.
Appreciate the additional camera angle. Staring down this watch myself, just might take the leap soon. It's good to see it from another angle to get a better sense of its size and light play.
Love this watch, but a little out of my budget right now. But certainly attainable! I've got a C65 Trident GMT, and the box has changed a little since my watch. Same style, but mine is longer and narrower. But CW knows how to make a nice watch.
Thanks For very nice review of this watch, I really like it a lot, I wonder what happen to Yellow Dial. I don’t see it on their website anymore. Great Looking Watch. Congratulations, Looks Great.
The Tradition is also one of my grails, and thanks to people's ignorance about Breguet, they drop like a rock on the secondary market making them MUCH more affordable than new. Its basically a Breguet pocket watch for the wrist, you cannot go wrong, I hope you get one Marc.
Such a cool watch - congratulations! I'd love one but right now just can't justify the expense. Personally I love the red dial "Andrew Morgan" special edition, but that light blue dial looks great and given your well documented love of blue dials, no surprise that was your choice. Enjoy! Hope "Mam Frankel" is as happy with her purple dial "The Twelve".
The resonator length determines its natural frequency. The had to do the wrap around to effectively make the beam twice as long. Wavelength of sound at that frequency is about 2/3 of a meter, so the resonator is tiny compared to wavelength. I am surprised that the motion of the watch does not cause the resonator to bang against the face.
Congrats, Mam! I waited over a year and it’s special, although I had to sell it again, because I thought I could pull off the 41mm, but sadly I cannot😢
I hope it was worth it for you.. I remember you in a video showing a Cool Chris Ward Model, the C3 Tourer (Green Dial) which is was such a little Gem, Back then you can find a pre-owned one for around $350.... now that model is over a Grand if you can find it.. I'd Say C Ward and Farer are at the Top of the Microbrands..
I missed out with the first dark blue version, I then jumped in when the second one was announced and I’m now the proud owner of a black one where the birds beak is red, I just love it.
You should do a revisit of this in 2 months when the novelty has worn off. Let us know how you get on with this over time! Thik we all love this watch but 4k is a lot!
Love the color, love that it’s titanium, love that it chimes but alas the size is wrong for me. Congrats on the purchase. It’s not like any other watch in that price range which is hard thing to say these days.
My ST Dupont makes the same D tone every time i smoke a cigar. On a more serious note (no pun intended) I honestly love the watch and the engineering around it but.... its a Sellita?!
I'd like to see exactly that same design profile, including the dial color but with a larger watch dial face. I don't tend to like messy dials, regardless of the functionality of the Watch.
