This week I'm OUT OF THE BASEMENT and back inside my 1956 Cal Craft rebuild to do flooring! I originally planned on a floating floor like my last build but ultimately went with VCT. I'm a big fan of this low cost, simple to install material - what do you think?

You didn't see my VCT vids did you. LOL... You did a nice job. I've never used an underlayment. I use T nuts instead of carriage bolts. I have a video on that also. Just search T Nuts on my channel or go to my website to find the listing. The way I was taught to do VCT requires no use of a tape measure. How about that? Other than that you did fine. And nothing wrong with measuring except that the way I do it is much faster and more accurate if you can believe that.

T-nuts! I should've thought of that. I'll keep that in mind for the next one, lol! I think I know what you're talking about with the fast way, but...but I don't know why I didn't do it that way, brain wasn't working 100% I guess. I did watch a couple of your VCT videos awhile back, but of course I should've watched more!

using one color and uni-directional your system works great BUT IF you were doing a 'checkered board' pattern or multi-directional patterns it looks more 'balances' if you determine the center of your walkway between the two rows of cabinets where the sink and storage units are located and positioning so you don't have a 'thin strip' in front of the doorway. PS the price of VCT is now (2023) around $1.50+/sqft

Totally agree with you there. You know I bought some more of those tiles this year at the same second hand scrap store and they were still $.45/title!

Great video - How does VTC hold up to freeze/thaw (Maine)? Should the camper be on the leveling jacks or hanging free when installing the flooring? (1970 Layton). Thanks

I would say that VCT holds up fine to temperature swings. Kansas ranges from around 0°F to 110°F every year and so far I haven't had any issues with them. Ideally you've had the frame jacked and level since you've started rebuilding it, and it will stay that way until you're finished. If you don't live in the ideal world, I would say jack it up and try to keep it that way until you're done with most of the rest of your build, but if you can't do that I wouldn't worry too much about it, just do your best.

Just curious where you purchased your vct tiles at that price. I'm pricing them out now at big box stores and they are $1.39/sqft

We've got a local carpet and building supply company that resells overstock and partial case items. There's just a pile of VCT tiles in all different colors, so you have to pick through to find what you want, but these campers don't need much so it's not too much of a hassle.

When you aren't working next to the wall a marble rolling pin works great.

That's a good idea!

The floor looks great. Do you have an opinion now as to which floor you would use in future projects? VCT or a floating LVT floor? I'm nearing the time that I'll have to decide which to use in my Gold Star rebuild. I kept the original 3/4" p!ywood floor, having only to repair a bit of rot in all four corners. The floor is covered with sheet vinyl that remains very adhered except over the plywood seams, that I have removed. I'm trying to decide if I should use a LVT that is able to go over uneven areas, or to install underlayment like you've done, then use VCT. Any advice you can give me would be appreciated.

Hey Rick, sorry to take a minute to reply. I like both types of floor so I suppose it depends more on what look I'm going for overall. I didn't want to have to put shoe moulding around the bases of all my cabinets, and I didn't want to engineer a solution to avoid moulding so that I could do a floating floor, so really my only option was to do VCT on this one. I think maybe I'd give an edge in preference to LVT if installing shoe moulding is an option; I think it looks a little more "fancy," and it sounds like it might be a bit less work on the install for you.

Looks awesome Conan. The whole inside looks great. With the price of everything skyrocketing, it must feel great to find that flooring for a total of $45. That's a steal of a deal! The long range forecast for us here in Atlantic Canada shows the temps are finally going to squeak just above zero celcius mark this coming week. One positive thing about everything going on in the world is Spring is coming soon.

Thanks! Technically I only used about half of the tiles I bought, so it was even less than $45!

We are almost the spot with out 71 Shasta LoFlyte. I hadn't considered those tiles. If one breaks, how difficult is it to replace?

I've never actually had to replace one, but I'd imagine you just pry up the remaining tile, put down a bit more adhesive and stick a new one down.

Where did you pick up the flooring? I am at the same point with 58 Terry.

We got it at a local building surplus supply store called Farha's Carpet and Building Supply, but you can buy VCT tiles at virtually any home supply store.

For future reference , just take a grinder with a flapper disk and hit those carriage bolts down , you can take the dome down enough to tile over them and save some cash and time , not saying its better but time , cost and wieght is things i look at , i want to save as much wieght as i can if it doesnt harm the build ...still i love your work so far 👍👍

That's a thought! Larry from MobilTec suggested using T bolts, and that's really what I should've done. If I'd gone with a floating floor I don't think the carriage bolts would've mattered at all anyway.
