Science Dave must be fully credited to Red Letter Media's scientist man. As it's just a copy paste of their joke. Which is perfectly apt and in the spirit of being a Talentless Hack. Next on TTT, we're going to repair some VCRs

I'm not going to comment of the boxset itself, but wow, Jen's painting has improved amazingly! I remember some of Jen's first painting videos where her models were sadly out of place next to some of Dave's work which was featured in the same video. I assumed Dave has years more experience of painting his man-dollies? I think it fair to say that Jen is rapidly closing that skill gap, to the point that my wife has started to show an interest in painting some minis. You Go Jen!

Okay, here's why I'm personally excited about old kits and apprehensive about modern fiddling. Monoposing. I'm a kitbasher, and those classic kits have always been fucken great at switching bits out. This is especially dire now, with GW seemingly spitefully dismissing kitbashing in all modern advertising materials and making several moves to crack down on it in official play. Don't get me wrong, there are some beautiful monopose models, but I don't want them, I want the models I wanna make not the ones GW tells me to make!

@tragicthegarnering3619
@tragicthegarnering3619 4 месяца назад
The simple way to build the old models is really nice when you need to build allot, they are usually also better for conversions, like making a new champion then(for two smaller units) would be a case of putting spare champion parts on a random body, with modern kits you will likely need to cute another model up to get the spare champion parts to fit. If i only ever needed one kits worth of models I'd be fine with the new style but even in 40k you need to much and it becomes a pain. It would be nice to see at least for the old world, some new kits that look better but are still simple and can have more stuff on the sprues.

The crazy old sculpts being sold at modern prices is the reason I will not be getting into old world... I was so hyped to go back and get Bretonnians and Tomb kings, the 2 factions I regret getting rid of/not buying when old world died... but the usual GW ridiculous prices turned me off completely. I spent 100$ on battletech instead and now I have a full army & 2 digital rulebooks... The contrast in price to entry is stark.

9:40 I'm actually shocked by how many nice skeleton minis GW has made. I've never paid that much attention to them, but - yeah, they're characterful without distorting the skeleton to the point of looking like a totally inhuman horror or a goofy cartoon. That's good to know; I sometimes buy wargaming minis to use as playing pieces for other games, and - those skeleton models are nice _and_ still neutral enough to function outside of their intended niche.

Yeah watching the reactions to the stuff outside the core boxset and its price to points ratio is terrible. The Ushabti, for example, are ridiculously costed for the amount of points you get AND you're going to need multiple of them so a unit of 9 costs you £157.50 as they're £52.50 for three...

the 1989 plastic skeletons was more well proportioned. There was only a single horse sculpt in the 1989 release, the later ones have slightly bigger bones and just look a little bit off compared to the original
@luketfer
@luketfer 4 месяца назад
I remember those 1989 plastic skeletons because they were cheap filler boxes, £5 for 10 skeletons or 5 Cavalry, if you needed skulls or dead animal bits you bought those kits by the shedload because they were cheap and cheerful. I remember very young me saving up pocket money and buying a box every 2-3 weeks purely so I could use the skulls and bits. That's something GW kinda doesn't do anymore, cheap filler units, for example the old Space Crusade pushfit two piece Tactical marines were great for just bulking out an army on the cheap. Essentially GW have priced out the younger demographics which seems like a shame...

as someone who has, from time to time, looked at getting models from that era on ebay, I view the GW prices as "very expensive but still effectively a discount on what they were a few months ago" (iirc the necrosphinx was going for like, $200+ NoS, so that's a big saving even with gw's current gouge. Also, to me, the old tomb kings are charming and goofy (and most importantly, highly posable and convertable) vs the new dragon, which is a nice enough model but doesn't feel Old World, it feels much more Age Of Sigmar.
@toeb1n
@toeb1n 4 месяца назад
I'm feeling a similar way in regards to prices. I've always wanted an Old World Dwarf army. I've considered spending an arm and a leg on ebay, so when GW comes out with them I know it will be expensive but at least less than what I would have paid otherwise. Plastic addiction is real 😅

Excellent paint job! I didn't buy the Tomb Kings box as I have skellies going back to the originals. I have the Skeleton Horde box (first GW skellie sprues), the Skeleton regiment box (same sprues in TK starter box), and I picked up some Tomb King sprues of weapons and shields for cheap. Besides those I picked up some used models and some proxies to finish out the army. I'm using a GW Zombie dragon / Terrorgheist as a proxy for the TK dragon from the FEC Start Collecting box. I might pick up some Ushabti and a Necrospyhinx or two and that's about it. I have a few boxes of the new and newer skellies and while they look better than the older minis, they are a lot more fragile and I've has a few fall apart while playing my AoS SBGL army. I hate the look of the new SBGL zombies but luckily I have 3 boxes of the old zombie regiments and I use my FEC ghouls as zombie proxies as well.
@luketfer
@luketfer 4 месяца назад
Be warned those Ushabti are absurdly expensive, £52.50 for *three*. Also I agree about the new zombies box, the old Zombies box also had the advantage of being easily kitbashable with a LOT of other kits, if you wanted Nurgle traitor guard it was quite easy to do head and leg swaps.

This was a fun history and painting video! While I completely agree that the older kits need an update, I feel that they should maintain the simple assembly of the older kits, at least for the core troop units. Putting 40 skeletons together is daunting enough without having to match 18 pieces per troop, all spread out willy-nilly around the frame. Honestly something akin to the current Necron warrior frame is probably ideal (though the latter has the issues of having to match guns to bodies, and some wonky chest piece assembly from the guns, but TKs don't have blasters so that issue is solved right there) If I ever get the bone dragon kit I'll probably hybridize your green vulture with the sand look. I'm thinking the core is glowing green, to sell the idea that it's manifesting and bursting from the sand.

Y'k. Most manufacturers at least have the sense to sell it for less, not more, even counting for inflation, when they use tooling decades old. Airfix barely mark up their "vintage"collection, by comparison; even Revell sell most of the surviving Matchbox kits with at least a crappy brush and some crappy paints as a "set". If I want obsolete skeleton models, I can always go to Eureka. Their horses are more difficult to assemble, but they are more realistic.

I'm disappointed by the return of the ancient skellies, mostly because I was disappointed by them when they were first released due: a quarter are forced to have pot lid belly armor, there is not enough Tomb King heads for all of them and unless you use spears you'll have a mish-mash of different weapons for what was essentially Nehekaran state troops. My current disappointment with them is the ridiculous price for 20+ year old models... Regardless, great video and lovely paintjob. I have my reservations about the bone dragon aesthetically for the Tomb Kings, but it is a cool model.

I don’t mind the older models. Yes they look like old models and they could’ve added new ones but I don’t think they’d up the cost that much than they otherwise would’ve. I can see why the tomb kings cost about 300 dollars while the Bretonnians were cheaper since you got more models and a bigger model for the tomb kings. I admit I’d rather they give us two 500pt armies than this. With that in mind I really shouldn’t try be fine with an inferior product. Still at least Old World sold well on launch day.

The Old World is not a full game line release, like the recent Horus Heresy V2 was. It was an experiment to see if GW could bring back a loved game using mostly existing ranges of models from their Archives. I get that you don't like the old Skeletons. I feel that your normally wonderful TTT video, was wasted harping on how much you don't like the old skeleton models for over half the time of the video. We get it. If TOW proves through its releases for the 9 supported armies that it can be profitable and will be played, I am sure GW will go back and invest the money to bring some of the older models... like the skeletons... up to date with the current technologies available to GW and expand the game with new armies like the rumored Kislev and Cathy, and updated version of the Legacy armies not supported with releases form the Old WHFB days. Perhaps if you had focused on what was good about the existing TK box, namely the TK upgrade sprue and some of the other Character models in the box, instead of harping on old skeletons, you could have better promoted the return of The Old World with this video.

I was born in ‘00, but honestly, I prefer the older style of the skaven clanrats, among a few other GW minis. Idk, just coming from someone with a design degree, so many modern GW minis are overdesigned and clearly meant to be viewed through a digital sculpting program and not as an actual mini. Should they cost nearly $300 usd though? No, but that’s GW prices nowadays.

Having bought and built the Tomb King box (finishing the base rims today), I have to say I love my little midnight skeletons. I know they are old, but I don't mind them, especially after building those new skeletons. Now, do I want an update Tomb King model line? YES! But, I think a lot of people are over looking something: GW wants to make money. Ignoring the high price tag, I'm not surprised GW didn't update the sculpts. Even during the height of Fantasy, they didn't update model lines which ultimately killed the game. What I'm getting at is it costs a lot of money and time to update a model line, and as Old World is basically a new IP that might sink, I don't think it was reasonable to expect a line update when their flag ship 40K still has Eldar models from 20+ years ago. The hope of course is, if Old World does good, then we might start seeing proper line updates, but I would not expect this for at least two or three years at the earliest.

I believe the reason I enjoy the set is...Ive been playing Warhammer games since the 80s. Jason and the Argonauts is one of my favorite movies. The skeleton fight scene implanted deep in my mind. Also, it always gave me Army of Darkness vibes. I also have over 800 GW goofy zombies. Now, I wouldn't say they are obviously the best models. Technically or otherwise. But it's similar to why I like, at least the first, Ghoulies movie. I dig goofiness. I didn't like their newer models (AoS) as they lacked charm. Sure more detail and such but... Think of it this way. When people fawned over Star Wars I was more a Judge Dredd kinda dood. Lastly and most importantly. As "bad" as the pricing is here it is leagues better than what folks paid for Tomb Kings before. I was lucky due to being in the game longer but when Id see how much second hand armies would go for on most trading sites? I know. Bonkers that GW pricing looks reasonable in comparison, but it's true.
