Update: The BLS store is giving me a full refund for the issues I experienced with their LTO cells. They said that they made a mistake and the cells were not labeled correctly. They wanted me to remove the video, and I refused. I told them that this will be a lesson to ensure that it never happens again. I still do not understand why these problems happen so often with battery distributors. This has happened on numerous occasions w/ multiple suppliers. Hopefully my video will teach the other companies a lesson. Previously, I did like the BLS store, and I have bought some really nice cells from them in the past. I am glad that I was ripped off before my viewers were. Who knows how many people they sent these cells to. If you bought these cells, test them and return them if necessary. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Does off-grid solar confuse you? Thanks for the Vid and NOT Taking it down ! Such reviews are Lessons for vendors & customers too. Any frauds / misrepresentations intentional or not must be put into the open for everyone to know it is happening. Out of curiosity. Do the date codes match ? Production codes printed on the cells ? Is it possible that they are New Old Stock that have been laying around in a warehouse for a period of time ? Should not be a factor unless something happened in storage, freezing or ?

LTO is favoured for transport applications - like trains and light rail where regenerative braking gives high charge rates. And also the high cycle life is very important. But as you say, these are not requirements for solar.

Hello Will, there is an easy way to tighten the buss bars properly with no danger of damage to cell. first put a nut on the threads flush with the base of the cell, you do not need to put any torque on the nut. Then put a buss bar on, then add a second nut, when you want to tighten the buss bars, you use two wrenches and the inside nut is screwed to the outside (as if you wanted to take it off), and you tighten the outside nut, there will be no tension going into the cell, you are only locking the two nuts into the buss bar. In some cases, you may need thinner nuts.

Also, calendar aging seems highly unlikely for these cells as most researchers on calendar aging agree that the cause of calendar aging is the graphite anode which isn't present in a lto battery

@@WillProwse Hey Will, I know you haven't done anything with LTO batteries for a long time now, but if you want real 45Ah grade A cells, you can get them from an American company called XS Power. They make a lot of extreme car audio batteries, and they used to have lots of Lead Acid batteries, but they have recently started offering rebranded Yinlong LTO cells and they also bought the intellectual property from the largest and best super capacitor company there was. I believe it was Maxwell or something close to that. They made 3000 farad super capacitors, which were very useful for extreme car audio since capacitors can charge and discharge almost instantly, and they can charge and discharge in low temperatures. LTO cells have lots of benefits for car audio too since you don't have to worry about the temperature as much as with Lifepo4. Plus, LTO's charge and discharge very quickly at high C rates. Thats perfect for car audio. Hence why they are being rebranded and sold by XS Power along with the 3,000 farad capacitors. Its a great combination to use the XS Power/ Yinlong LTO cells in combination with 2,000 to 3,000 farads of capacitors. So, if you want to try the 45 amp hour XS Power cells or their capacitors, I can say they are regarded as a top battery brand in the car audio space. Limitless Lithium is another big company that has really expensive high C rate Lithium batteries for extreme car audio. It would be extremely interesting if you did a high C Rate output challenge between the Yinlong cells, proper Grade A 45Ah XS Power LTO cells, Headway 38120HP Cells to represent high output Lifepo4 cells, and maybe 2 AGM Lead Acid batteries in parallel. Pit them all against each other in a showdown and a teardown. See who has the best high output cells in the consumer space. That would be incredibly interesting to me and about 100,000 other people who use Lithium batteries in high power car C audio builds

That's wierd Will, I have the 40ah LTO grade B cells on my electric motorcycle pack and I've capacity checked them but still got the 40ah capacity. I've since swopped to 32650 6ah 3C lifepo4 cells. 332 of them lol. I'm falling in love with lifepo4. I mean if I can get up to 6000 cycles then that's perfect, even after that I'll still have 80% capacity. Also the reason there is so many grade B cells is because the Chinese use the LTO on applications and probably are required to swop them out after a certain time period, this is especially true for medical and public transport applications. Instead of throwing them out they sell it to us. That's my theory. Thanks for the vids!

Hi William, I love to watch your videos. I have dabbled in Hybrid Power Systems for over 10 years. During this video you down play the value of LTO high C rate. And for solar power, I agree. However, on a personal note, I have a Bad Boy Buggy, which is basically a souped up 4x4 Golf Cart. It has 8 each 6V 200A-H Pb Acid batteries in series and pulls 500 Amps. If I could get 100A-H of Li batteries that could handle 500 Amps at a reasonable price, I would switch over. In this case LiFePO4 cannot handle the C rate that I need. LTO is the only way to go. The limiting factor seems to be the BMS. The one you showed is good for 100 Amps. So, just a side note here, LiFePO4 cannot handle all applications. Keep up the good work.

Interested in building an LTO pack for long distance ebike touring because of the high charge rate. The ability to travel 45 miles, potentially get a full charge off of any standard household outlet in 20-30 minutes while having lunch, and proceed is very practical for that use. Will need to pull it in a trailer though because of size and weight . Thanks for the video .

Hey thanks so much for the great videos, I just discovered your channel and website. I was wondering what system you would suggest for someone who wants to get their whole house completely on solar without sacraficing any usage. I bought a solar power setup from Iron Edison this summer, I haven't had time to install it, but it's supposed to be a 1.5 kw 12v system, we shall see, but I had to compromise at the time and bought 2 200 Ah AGMs, but now after watching your channel I see how easy it is to build LIFEPO4 packs. I previously built a small 10 Ah pack, but the instructions I was following were iffy and I barely got the thing built, works great with a roll up panel I have. Anyway, so you suggest 48 v? And since I will most likely need more than 4800 w, do you suggest a different BMS? (I see on your website you don't suggest the BMS you like pat 4800 w). My plan is to slowly build out a system a bit at a time, add battery packs here and there. But I want to make sure the skeleton of the system is ready to handle the growth, I live in the country in Idaho and we are on the grid. The system I have currently does have a charge controller that is multi chemistry, including LiFPO4, and would barely be enough to power my home office, I do ham radio too. I would like to buy very durable long lasting components and buy backups o put away in case... Any help is appreciated.

Always great reviews man! - Have you ever gone over lithium nickel cobalt aluminum oxide batteries? There's a new power station coming out using them called ElecHive Portable & Universal Super Power Station. Would love to get your opinion on if it's a good system. Cheers.

Hi Will, love your videos! What do you think about the "4pcs Lot LiFePO4 3.2V 280Ah Cells". I've been seeing them around on amazon and aliexpress and they seem like a great deal for a 12v 280ah system. Maybe too good of a deal.

@ProDigit80
@ProDigit80 2 года назад
You can very easily install them in series, and get a 24, 48, or 96V system. The current doesn't change on series connected batteries. For solar cells, if you use many, you can very easily upvolt the 12V output to 96V, which is much better for long power leads, before charging the pack. Maybe 100 amps isn't what you would use at 12V, but it's perfectly fine if your system is a larger system (like a solar farm) at 96V, or even 192V.

You didn't mess up. It was a learning experience. Battery companies are very misleading and that won't change any time soon unless people learn how to catch them.

The reason you can most likely just to get grade B is that Grade A normally do not sell in retail pack. Normally if you want to get a Grade A cells you need to contact the battery manufacturer directly, and in China there are many recycle battery and they put it on Online retail sales (as recycle one has greater margin). But if you are buying so small amount I don't think you can get much response from manufacturer LTO battery also has very little demand from the customer market, so it makes it even harder to get a good one

You find a better supplier? I need to buy some of those testing tools you got before i get cells apparently. Im looking to run a 48v-120v electric motor outdoor in freezing temps. Think this chemistry is good or lifepo with a heater? Also do they have a decent bms for up to 120v?

Do you recommend a 2 port BMS that can switch the charge to a heater if the temp is below 0c? Where I live it's entirely possible that the cells will be freezing (perhaps down to -5c at worst) at first light when a solar system would start trying to charge.... maybe for 10 days a year, but it will definitely happen....

I've gotten so used to ragging on china and thinking they are dishonest I keep forgetting the incompetence and hubris. Haha. I know a lot of people that went there to help them get plants working. The Chinese just assume they did it right, without validation. It wouldn't surprise me if they thought these were really as specified. I seem to remember a CPU manufacturer pumped a few billion into these great micros 98% failure rate... now they sell the originally 16 core micros as 4-8 core and they still haven't worked through the backlog.

Have you ever considered using the titonate cells as a safety for the other lithium cells in your system? If you run the solar panels to the titonate cells and use them to keep the others topped off and warm? Just a thought.

Hey Will, why did you go with aluminium bus bars this time instead of copper? I did some research and it seems aluminium bus bars dissipate heat better. I only ask because I have 2 meters of copper gas pipe here I'm planning on using as bus bars.
