As to using cardboard, it works well. There is an nonprofit company that makes adaptive furniture for special needs children out of cardboard. They make slanted backed chairs, highchairs and other furniture that hold children, all out of cardboard. The will use multiple layers of cardboard, glue guns, paint and varnish. They have been in business for several years.
@@iamthepapercraftfairy not sure if it's the same one they are talking about but I know there is one called adaptive design association that does this
Mam, I am watching this on Feb 23rd, 2024. I live in a tiny tiny flat but I do need a small piece of furniture to hold my rubber stamps, ribbons, twine and a few other craft items. I have one small place left in my place to have a storage cabinet but, all are too wide that I see at the Goodwill. I have Surebond glue sticks on hand and Stanley packing tape, only need the foam core. This is so AMAZING! You such a unique individual creative person and you have a great personality for working with others. So happy I have seen this tonight. I am hoping to buy a small home by the end of this coming summer and to have light weight furniture to move is always a plus too. I think your bookcase would be beautiful with a nice pretty peal and stick wall paper just on the outside or just in the inside. This is a real game changer for me if that's the right wording. Living on a budget too this will not break the bank. Blessings, Rebekah in VA
Hi, Rebekah! So glad you liked this!!! And, if you are covering anyway... you could use cardboard - with so many boxes being thrown away all of the time, you could save more money by using discarded boxes for this project. Let me know how it goes and thanks for watching!
This may be the best thing I've ever seen on youtube!!! I am totally headed to Dollar tree!! I have made beams for my living room, trim for doors and windows, columns, and now Shelves!! From foam core and cardboard!! Guess what - no one knows!😊😊
OH MY GOSH! Please send me pictures of your beams!!!! That is amazing! You can share them to my Crafty Organizer page on Facebook: facebook.com/groups/730125317461615/
Thank you sooooo much. I live in an RV. I have converted the "bunk beds" into storage area, but I need some light weight shelving for my arts and crafts, as well as canned goods. This is going to be perfect with all the canned goods on the bottom shelves. Can't wait to start building, though I may add quarter rounds to the back and sides of each shelf.
In college we had an assignment to make a chair, that can hold an adult, completely out of cardboard and nothing else to hold it together. Everyone in the class came up with something different, style wise, but ever chair held.
I used to work at a co. that made store fixtures. They weight tested to point of collapse. Then guaranteed 200# less. But that means you'd have to make 2. As for using cardboard, I used to have a book on making nomadic furniture. Much of it was cardboard, though not focused on storage, their techniques would transfer. Can't remember exact title, nomadic was in it. I donated it after I bought my house.
I am super excited to do this I truly was checking prices for the bookshelf with 3 shelves at Walmart and they are $29. Something for each one and now I can make a few of these save a boat load of money and have fun doing it so Thank you you have been so much help I'm trying to get organized on a budget while dealing with rheumatoid arthritis and you have given me so many ideas and a positive outlook so THANK YOU AGAIN 🤗😁🤗😁🤗😁🤗😁🤗😁🤗😁🤗
I would be dancing around your craft room in excitement and celebration with you!! I’m sooo excited about this! Thank you, thank you!!!From a fellow organizing and bargain geek.🤓🥳🥰
Thank you for this video. I found myself just as excited as you as you were loading the bookcase. I love using foam core for storage. Built two really smaller versions months ago to store my boxes of tea on my tea bar. Since I drink Twinings tea I call them the “Twinings towers”. I’m rearranging my craft/bedroom and will be making these to add for my storage.
What a super cool idea to build your own foam shelf. I was very happy to see the weight testing; your excitement had me clapping too!! Love your positive energy! thanks for the tutorial. 🙂
That is a really good idea! Since they are light, they will be easy to take along. Here's a thought: to save space in your vehicle, you could create several individual foam boxes using Norrine's method, and make them graduated in size so that they will nest inside one another. When you want to stack them up, put the smaller ones on top of the larger ones and clip them together with binder clips.
Not only strong but looks very sharp too :) Now, imagine, if you carefully cover it with contact paper you can make it match your room and reinforce all the joins too. It would never come apart. You made it look so easy I just may give it a shot!
I’m pretty excited about this! I bought 20 (or maybe it was 25-can’t remember now) sheets of foam core from DT for 25 cents each as they had been water-damaged. The foam was in perfect condition but the paper was a little water-stained in one corner. So if I make this, no, WHEN I do I can cover the water stains with contact paper to make it prettier and stronger. I am not sure what I will use it for, but looking at the shallow shelf behind you with the gutter, I’m imagining using those in there somehow, stair-stepped (so maybe three gutters per shelf) and use them to hold all my ribbons and washis? I also use a TON of funfoam and flipflops foam for crafting for my grandkids and Children’s Church so that might make for interesting-and-yet-perfect lighter-weight storage for foam, and for the bottom shelf I can use more foam to create several mini-shelves for paper storage? I will have to see about that, unless you have a tutorial for that? This is a fantastic Idea, what a terrific idea Norrine! How cute are you with your giddiness!!??
After thinking about this - I realized I have a definite need - I have become obsessed with making gnomes - big gnomes - little gnomes - holiday gnomes - and I needed a unit to display my gnomes but it is a narrow space - so i can adjust the dimensions of this and make a perfect fit - also adjust the height of the shelves for the size of my gnomes - thank you - probably saved me $25 or more trying to find a narrow shelving unit :D
Rosemary Miller - i also love a bargain! Norrine always provides such amazing ideas, and they are budget friendly. If you have any old yardsticks they can be cut to your specific needs. Years ago I found a bunch of yardsticks in a Thrift Store that had been used to stir paint. All numbers were covered but they were in a rusty can labeled Free Firewood. I knew I would eventually find a purpose - this will be the perfect one. Also paint stir-sticks are usually free. I have quite a collection of stir-sticks. Furring sticks are not expensive but I prefer to limit trips due to health issues.
@@rosemarymillar5458 Remember you can also cut down a bookcase for your gnomes like Norine cut the one down for her office. I see a lot of them given away for nothing.
You are all so quick with the amazing feedback!!!!! GA Chic is right, yardsticks or paint sticks.... (you can get a few free at HomeDepot or Lowes) would work! And Videosrfunfunfun made a great point too! Find a freebie and cut it down to work for you!
You have such great ideas, and it's fun to see how excited you get over your own projects. If I'm that excited about something I made, I feel 'I did good' : )
Love this! I've been picking up a few sheets of craft foam from Dollar Tree here and there. I crochet and have tons of yarn. I live in a very small apartment and need to go 'up' with my storage. This will be perfect for my yarn and I can see all the colors! Thank you for the inspiration!
Wonderful! I'd love to see pictures when you are done! You can share them to my Crafty Organizer page on Facebook: facebook.com/groups/730125317461615/
If I were to make one for myself, I’d put three of the furring strips on each shelf and double the shelf thickness. Because I know me, I’d end up shoving something else on it and boom. I know adding more strips and doubling the foam core board would up the price. You really did a great job with this. Never would have thought foam core would hold so much.
This makes me excited, so much easier and cheaper than having to build book shelves. I can see this being covered in some awesome contact paper too. Thank you!!!!
I was holding my breath every time you added a container to the shelves! Then I was laughing, with you not at you, about how excited you were! As you were filling up the shelves I was thinking how pretty it could be with contact paper! Anxious to see how it holds up! I will be checking your facebook page in a few days. Thanks for sharing!
Don’t blame you about getting so excited, I would have too! Awesome! Now I want to make one for scrapbook 12 x 12 paper! Wish you would do a video of making that !! 🤞🏻
Honestly I didn't think it would work, but so great that it did!! Shelving is so expensive, this shelf I'm sure is something everyone can afford. Will be saving video to make some for sure. Thank you Norrine! Have a Blessed week.
Norrine this is absolutely outstanding👏👏👏 Your excitement, giddiness and encouragement also equally outstanding!!! Keep up the great work and thank you so much ❤️😀
I thought you were so cute getting al, excited over this. And you should, it's awesome! I wish I could find foam board in my dollar trees by me. I will be looking for the soda can bin for the paint!
This is brilliant! Thanks to your previous videos on foam core, I've started making custom organization items out of foam core instead of searching for things that will fit where I need them.
I love this unit,. I got as excited about it as you are!!! Future project for me and master bath for my lighthouses. Thanks for all you do!! I have told several friends about your channel and all told me they would definitely take a peek, I am sure they will subscribe and enjoy your videos as much as I do! Thanks again!
I'll keep you posted. The other organizers I've made from foam are all holding up... I've only lost one - but it was sitting in the sun... and on a day that hit 103, the glue melted. LOL
I love this idea but I'm curious as well, especially if you are taking weight off and on a shelf repeatedly. The weakest part is the glue at the joints. If you upgrade and get the thicker foam core, it will be even more solid. It's tough to cut, but it's strong stuff. I've made drawer dividers that are close to 2 yrs old that have held up well, but have had a few places where the glue came undone over the past year. I live in Texas where our humidity and temperature fluctuates. Not sure if that caused it or not. I love the concept and am looking to adapt this for my closet overhaul. (edited for clarity - ha!)
@@kimatlastlooks2915 Yes & Foamboard !. I use a water activated, brown packing tape, with the reinforced fiberglass thread. Then decoupage over it with patterned paper. I just surrendered to the humidity issues in Florida and went with an adhesive that agrees w damp conditions.
@@TheCraftyOrganizer 😊 I am really happy with the progress, tagged your IG! I started by making the big unit like yours as practice, and ended up getting really creative and I'm now a foam board fanatic haha.
This is a cool concept. I used to work in a workshop where we taught the mentally challenged how did you different types of Peace work. We used to take boxes and the brown packing tape and make jigs to put things like paper and different things then and you'd be surprised how much those things held. Hadn't thought about that in years till I seen this video I wonder which one is stronger? I like the cardboard cuz it paints and you can put things like decoupage and stuff on it so easily what about foam core I've never tried to put anything on it to cover it can you use paint or can you decoupage on it?🥰🐞🤗
Wow! I'm just starting to try and get my craft/sewing area set up and organized. This will be super helpful to make some of these! I hope my $$ store has some. 😊
Your.excitement and happiness is contagious! This is super genius! And, just a note (not promoting but if access to Dollar Tree is not available), Wal-Mart sells foam core.
You are not a GEEK Norrine! You are a creative and fun person. I consider myself a geek because of my quirks and things I get exited about and that give me joy. The thing is... we all love a geek because of their specialness and awesomeness.❤️
You know what this is perfect for? Fiber for spinning and felting. It is light, you can have all the colors and types of wool out where you can see them and if you run an elastic or even a piece of fiber board across about 1/3 the way up, you could move it around without taking everything off the shelf. So if you are spinning multicored yarn, you could bring the yarn outside with you, it will be secure in the shelf as you spin outside, enjoying the sunshine. You can change around your storage without moving everything off the shelf. I retro fitted thr trunk I have with foam shelves, and I will send you photos when it is done.
That's amazing!!!! Yes, PLEASE send me pictures when you are done!!!! You can share them to my Crafty Organizer page on Facebook: facebook.com/groups/730125317461615/
