OpenCore Legacy Patcher 2.0 was just released and it supports macOS 15 Sequoia now. In my last video I used a Mac mini 2010, and tried to run macOS 14 Sonoma with only 2 GB of RAM but was only able to go Big Sur and it was pure pain.
I’m going to give a go again and see if this computer will actually run Sequoia with some upgrades.

I'm running a 2011 macbook pro, a 2013 mac pro trashcan, a 2012 macbook pro and a 2015 Imac on Opencore. ALL running Sequoia perfectly now. You will NOT get Iphone mirroring, but that is about it. Don't need it either.

If it was the 2012 QUAD CORE 2.3 or 2.6 Ghz it would be a breeze to run Sonoma... Those QUAD CORE 2012 Minis are like the HOLY GRAIL of the Minis...

Well, this was enough to get me to move back from Linux Mint to Sequoia on my 2013 MacBook Pro 15" and so far, so good.

I assume that's a retina version? Those early gen Retinas are battle hardened. Still a great design.

@@dmug yup, not the first but the first revision as it were of the Retina MacBooks. This one is almost due for its third battery so battle hardened it is.

Thanks for a nice video! I'm using a 2012 mac mini with 16GB ram with a dirt-cheap SSD, really run well on Sonoma via OCLP! No rush on updating to Sequoia as many patches still coming, may try it when updates settle down a bit.

Those 2012s are oodles better, I kinda want to get one, I’ve recently seen them dip to $50

Well-‘Cooked’ as we would say in the UK! Share Greg’s pain re: the internal surgery required in some these ‘upgradeable’ models (ah… golden days). If you ever have to replace the CMOS battery in a 2013 ‘Trash Can’ Mac Pro, you’ll need a large desk, a lot of time, and a therapist on hand afterwards!

I didn't realize "Cooked" was British in origin. Yeah, I miss upgradability. I originally was going to pull the Optical drive but saw you needed specialized tools on iFixIt and nixed that idea.

Interesting to see that Big Sur ran so poorly in comparison to Sequoia, nice to see that it does work well though. My 2012 Mac Mini runs Big Sur extremely well, it still feels very fast and responsive. The 2010 is a cool system considering it has an optical drive and it does support older versions of Mac OS also, having it setup with a bunch of old Mac OS X versions sounds awesome!

I'm wondering if my install was kinda borked by installing it with only 2 GB of RAM or something. It was impossibly slow.

I’m sure it didn’t help, my Mac Mini was already upgraded to 16GB by the time I installed Big Sur. Even though mine is a newer model, the 2010 should still work well for newer versions at least when upgraded.

@@TheOriginalCollectorA1303 Yeah, I kinda wanted a 2012 Mac Mini but my budget for senseless old computers is pretty minimal. I'm still debating what to do with this computer, I'm thinking I'll install macOS 10.6 - 10.15 for when I need to quickly test something from that era. I have a black MacBook 2007 with Snow Leopard but I find the screen so unpleasant to use.

I use my 2012 as my main editing machine with FCP, I upgraded it because it is more or less my main modern Mac desktop. I do use other systems often, but the RAM and SSD upgrades have been worthwhile for FCP alone. That sounds like a great use for the 2010, it’s nice to see it can run the latest, but it will run older versions really well. I’ve got a black MacBook 2008, but I use it more as a Mac Mini since the backlight inverter board doesn’t work. Still a fun system to use though!

@@dmug⁠⁠What is the approach to do that? How to install multiple macOS in the same machine? How many space will it need’s to have multiple versions? I have a same machine with only 8Gb of RAM and this solution to install some versions of macOS it’s a good idea.

I stuck a raspberry pi in my old mac mini from 2008. It runs RU-vid at 1080p just fine now. It was a cheaper option than buying a case for the Pi5 and looks nicer as well.

I got a couple of MM 2012 and 2014 using OCLP running Ventura and Sonoma. The 2012MM have 8GB Ram and 500GB SSD and it runs pretty good. The 2014 got 16GB and 1TB with Sonoma and also runs fine. Got a MM 2010 like yours and haven't done much with it yet. I put 10.7 Lion there and it runs great. I might just leave it on Lion and use the CD player to play retro games. Have not done any upgrade on it yet. Maybe later this year during the holidays.

I've got a mid 2011 quad-core i5 iMac and a late 2012 dual-core i5 Mac Mini running Sequoia via OCLP. The imac has 24gb of ram and a 500gb hard drive and it runs Sequoia pretty nicely but since it's a non-metal gpu and 'legacy' Bluetooth, a lot of productivity apps and ever Airdrop won't work which kinda limits its usefulness. My Mac Mini, which I paid 100 Canadian dollars for has 16gb of ram and 2 500gb ssd's. It was actually running Kubuntu when I bought it, liiterally as soon as I got it hooked up I put Sequoia on it. I've also got a late 2009 Core 2 Duo iMac with 4gb of ram running Monterey. I want to try putting Sequoia on it as well but I either need to get a bluetooth keyboard and mouse or get a usb hub as the installer quits because it doesn't detect any input devices

What I noticed about MAC OS is that Sonoma and Sequoia require 6gb of RAM at idle on activity monitor.

It'll actually jump around based on how much RAM you have, less ram and it'll use less wired RAM. macOS like the IRS when it comes to memory, the more you have, the more it wants. Of course, more is better as more of the OS core functionality can be always present.

Funny, from all (approx. 1500) of "look I can run Sequoia on old hardware" videos you are 3. place (lead iMac 2008 with oxygen support). Now, try Sequoia on a Mac SE/30 - without a 68030 accerleration.

I am 3rd? Not sure what you mean? Running it on the 3rd worst setup? I’d be interested seeing the worst setups as it’s a kick to see people extend computers well beyond their intended use.
