Well and the simple fact that society is as braindead as it could possibly be these days, and majority don't understand how the platform even works. Most people think everything is LIVE or present day was filmed within just a day or two. Not grasping that most channels film their "episodes" weeks to months before hand. Cause we know this whole hi-Low was starting being filmed in May/June and probably ended by August. But yet people think this is all done just last week in the beginning of December

I really liked Nolan's attention to detail on where the vortex generators actually needed to go for his application. I've always thought it was strange that they seem to always get put above the rear window whenever a spoiler was used. Nolan looking back at his "test" footage and going ahead and putting the gens on the glass where it looked like they needed to go according to the yarn movement is a real big function over style and big brain move in my book. That low car front splitter made from a template copy and plywood was the jam as well.
@Camburger
@Camburger Год назад
I'm critical of vortex generators. I wanted it to work for them, I think the tiny model was too small to represent the full scale effect since the air particles weren't shrunk down as well. Random question, are spoilers any use to FWD cars? I don't enjoy hating on some people's builds, I'm trying to be better lol
@realakj05
@realakj05 Год назад
@@Camburger I’m not quite sure. Like yea they work for all cars but I feel like you’d wanna focus more on maybe a front splitter over a rear splitter. But if you can do both that’d be great too
@kristjancebulj8162
@kristjancebulj8162 Год назад
Yeah, I don't think those really do as good of a job as they could be doing if they are halfway down the rear window. Vortex generators make vortexes from laminar flow (that's where the yarn is still flowing straight), the air that's already turbulent (that's where the yarn is going crazy) is next to useless. They need to be placed where the flow is still laminar, to extend the point where it separates and becomes turbulent further back. Placing them where the separation (the point where laminar flow becomes turbulent flow) has already occured doesn't do much.
@lilgary9181
@lilgary9181 Год назад
@@CamburgerKeep in mind spoilers don’t make a noticeable impact until after about 70ish MPH. Running just a rear spoiler on a FWD vehicle will actually work against it because it’s taking downforce off the front tires which will be less grip. You would want the front lip in tandem with the spoiler so the whole car gets pulled down.
@dustinbrueggemann1875
@dustinbrueggemann1875 Год назад
@@Camburger The wind tunnel was only configured to measure lift, not drag, but drag is the only thing the vortex generators should really be affecting. They'd have to have used a horizontal force gauge to have shown if they actually meaningfully impacted the drag. Vortex generators are also much more apparent at higher speeds. Their tunnel was good as a proof of concept, but I highly doubt it was producing 120mph winds like the vehicle would experience.

That would definitely show a better improvement on lap times.

@@shinn43 Fair enough. Even though, I doubt if anyone wanted to mess with that high of a price aero parts without running some type of simulation or testing. Otherwise it's not testing performance gain , but only the looks of it. Given the fact that they are building time attack cars , the splitter and the wing should have some type of tune. Aero is a very tricky thing were you could spend so much yet have almost no time gain at all if you don't plan/test. With the numbers you’re already squeezing from high car .6 seconds is a meaningful gain, low car gaining double that is easier considering. What I’m impressed with is that both actually improved on time with the weight increase, goes to show aero is pretty important

they said in this video that low car won, spending was not worth it (low car actually performed better for cheaper--probably because fabricating besope aero from video analytics is better than buying expensive off the shelf stuff)

I would like to mention there is a reason why Subaru went with the roof spoiler versus the vortex generator on the 06-07 STi. It’s with the slope angle of the rear window pairing with the factory STi spoiler. The roof spoiler was able to redirect air more effectively down the rear glass, producing more air under the rear wing. The factory STi spoiler would shake like crazy at speed on the MY04-MY05 STi, but the spoiler shake was drastically reduced with the implementation of the roof spoiler. There may have been better results if the roof spoiler was utilized over the roof diffuser. Some may bring up the Evo having a roof diffuser. The reason it worked better for the Evo was the rear glass angle was less than the STi, the trunk lid was also longer, and the Evo VII, VIII, and IX had a more raked spoiler, where the STi was damn near vertical, so for the Evo, the roof diffuser worked efficiently, where the STi had more benefit from a redirection of air.

It would be interesting ina high/low season to do a followup with a third car, where you take the expensive parts where you'd recommend them, and the cheap ones you'd recommend, and see how that car compares against high and low.

The wing doesn't produce downforce from air pushing against it, but think of it like an upside down airplane wing. The air moves faster under the wing then on top, causing negative lift. This is controlled by the shape and angle of the wing, similar to a wing airfoil.
@V8_Diva
@V8_Diva Год назад
Spoilers are the ones that do that, right?
@JohnnyDoeDoeDoe
@JohnnyDoeDoeDoe Год назад
Some of the downforce is also from the angle of attack, as in airplanes as well
@celderian
@celderian Год назад
@@V8_Diva Correct but they also disrupt the air coming from the top of the car killing the lift that the body may be generating.
@13vex
@13vex Год назад
@@V8_Diva spoilers are designed for improving airflow, instead of increasing downforce. They’re useful for SUVs and hatchbacks since they have large, flat rear ends (2:30 negative space) which create larger negative spaces which reduces stability at high speeds. For simplisticities sake: spoilers improve a car with bad aerodynamics, a wing improves a cars downforce.

10:16 FYI, don’t mount mount your splitter supports to the plastic bumper. For something that will see 10s and maybe hundreds (optimistic) pounds of downforce, the last thing you want is the support ripping out of the bumper or the bumper ripping out of it’s attachment points. Secure it so a stiff part of the body and preferably the frame.

I'd be really interested to see Hi car and Low car in a wind tunnel now, I want to see if those lower mounted vortex generators made any significant contribution 😅 I also wonder if the big difference could have been caused by removing the entire bumper vs just the splitter, if that had a significant impact. Either way, awesome episode as always, Donut Media really is the best.
@fruitygranulizer540
@fruitygranulizer540 Год назад
i doubt it. the strings there weren't flowing in the same direction not because of disrupted airflow, but rather a lack of airflow. and u want as much air to flow through the vortex generators as possible so u have as much clean air going to the wings. vortex generators already make a very small difference in aerodynamics, and if mounted where low car mounted them, i have no doubt they did absolutely nothing

7:02 I study mechanical engineering at the university of Ingolstadt (hometown of Audi) and they taught us that turbulent air is better attached to an object which means that the vortex generators are way to much behind the “big curve” where the air starts to detach from the car. They must get attached shortly before the air starts to detach to generate turbulent air flow so the air sticks to the car for longer. Audi for example generated turbulent air on their DTM cars by glueing some kind of wires to the diffusor which allowed them to make the Diffusor steeper without detaching the air flow. Hence they had very slow air behind the car but very fast air unter the car.
