This video shows an extremely rare and original 1964 Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe, only six Daytona original coupes were ever built between 1964 and 1965. In 2009 a Daytona Coupe (chassisnumber CSX2601) was sold for $7.25million US dollars, with such a ridiculous value it's even more incredible to see one being driven very fast around track!

Eidrian111 Ferrari should be scared shitless, Shelby purposely ordered by Henry Ford II to beat Ferrari's ass and he did. Good old American iron V-8's proved that they could beat Ferrari's ass. Enzo never got over our B-17's leveling his Modena Factory. He was a facist who worshipped Mussolini, so he got back at the Americans by killing so many American drivers. Shelby went for an interview and didn't like Enzo's demeanor and didn't drive for him, Shelby was a real gentleman who wouldn't have put up with Enzo very long. When Bob Lutz and Lee Iococca came home after the attempt to buy Ferrari that's when Henry Ford II went after And beat Ferrari's ass.that is when Ferrari kissed up,to Chevrolet and became a rival to Ford. The thing that sealed it for Henry Ford II to end it's racing was when Ferrari pulled it is cars from racing, Henry Ford got what he wanted to beat Ferrari's ass. It was on a sign in the North American's (F-86) factory on LAX-Mines Field that say's," Beat Ferrari's Ass". It was an order to Shelby by Henry Ford II.

+Robert Frias  So rarely do we ever get to hear the 289 at a full chat pulling a little over seven grand that we forget that majestic ford sound. In this video the sound is spine tingling. Remember, the coupe ran about 390hp @ 2000 pounds, 190mph could often be achieved

+James Stewart Shelby and his boys had the 289 in race trim dynoing at over 425 HP in '65...the high numbers were all do to the headwork done at the famous head shop in south Cali (I forget the name now)...the race 289's were basically running 351 windsor heads that were reworked/ported....that's what I remember from the old days anywho.

@rocketman63

There are subtle differences that can add up to a big difference in sound. Port shape and symmetry/asymmetry, cam grind, compression, firing order, intake manifold, carburetion or fuel injection, combustion chamber shape, exhaust system type: these all contribute. To me, the roadracing Ford Windsors are the ultimate in musical-sounding muscle V-8's.

@Loulovesspeed
@Loulovesspeed 5 лет назад
@James Avery - Not always! This 289 small block putting out 390 HP works better in road racing vehicles because it is so much smaller and lighter. The big block 427 Cobra was very fast on the straight, but got passed in the corners by the small block as it was quite nose heavy. Fine for drag racing, not good in road racing. Ask any driver familiar with the 289 and 427 Cobras and I'll guarantee all of them will say the 289 was easier to drive at the limit and didn't under steer in corners like the 427 did.

While I get that they exist, I cannot begin to understand them. If I dropped 7.25 million on this car, you can bet your lily white ass I'm going to take it out and drive it hard at least once or twice a year like this. And Shelby had 5 of them that he left in England after one of the 24 hours at Lemans and gave strict instructions to dump them in the English channel. Good thing they weren't.

The Shelby Daytona Coupes are stunning beauties. Incredible that Pete Brock penned them simply to perform a task. And what true car guy could resist the angry, thoroughbred roar from the Hi-Po 289?? My favorite race car ever, and my vote for most beautiful.

IFKR?? The 289 HO and the 427 SOHC Cammer variant in the GT40 mk2 are the only two sounds that have ever brought tears to my eyes!!

@Snehan Ghosal - FYI, The GT40 MKII had an FE wedge head side oiler 427. The sohc hemi cammer was a variant of this block, and never made it into the GT40.

Without a doubt, the greatest GT car ever built. That is my dream car and I was lucky enough to see them run and win at Sebring in the 60s mor than once. This is what you got when a muscle car engine was coupled to a high speed gear drivetrain and a fantastic aerodynamic body. No one has exceeded this design. The old professor Live Free or Die!

Still scaring the pants off the Ferraris, all these years later, I imagine somewhere, somehow, Carroll Shelby is smiling. She's a beast of a car, screams like a demon when you give it the gas, goes like a bat outta hell, and looks absolutely gorgeous doing it all.

This car sounds like a beast, but to add insult to injury to Ferrari, it's only a factory 289 small block. It wasn't making earth shattering power, but it was the body design by Pete Brock that allowed the top speed, handling, and even fuel mileage. What a great team and great car Shelby built! Best in the world.....

Sounds great …..I parked next to one a couple months ago in Dearborn, MI at Gateway Classic Motors. I'm very proud of my Ford Racing Exhaust on my 2010 Shelby GT500 but when the 1965 Cobra Daytona took off and left the parking lot …..OH MY GOD! ...it was the coolest sound I ever heard and it was coming out of a Roush 427 crate motor.
