Welcome to our latest video on sailboats with aft cabins and sugar scoops! In this video, we'll be taking a closer look at these two popular features and discussing their benefits for sailors.
First, let's talk about aft cabins. Located at the rear of the boat, these cabins offer privacy and comfort for the crew, away from the noise and activity of the main living area. Aft cabins are often equipped with a comfortable berth, storage space, and an en-suite bathroom for added convenience. We'll show you some great examples of sailboats with luxurious aft cabins, and discuss the advantages of this feature for longer trips and liveaboard situations.
Next up, we'll take a look at sugar scoops. This is a term used to describe the stern platform of a sailboat that extends past the transom, creating a larger deck space for relaxation and activities. Sugar scoops are great for sunbathing, swimming, fishing, and docking the dinghy. We'll show you how to make the most of your sugar scoop, and discuss the safety considerations you should be aware of when using this feature.
Throughout the video, we'll be showcasing some of the best sailboats on the market that feature both aft cabins and sugar scoops, and giving you tips on how to choose the right boat for your needs. Whether you're a seasoned sailor or a beginner, this video will provide you with valuable insights into the world of sailboats.
Don't forget to like and subscribe to our channel for more great content on sailing and boating. Thanks for watching!

I would say a separate shower stall is a necessity for a live aboard. In my opinion 😅 . Thanks for the time and effort!

I've lived on a 40ft boat for years now, we only use 25-30ft of it and the rest just stored building supplies and stuff. We're going to be downsizing because it's a waste of space and I'm paying for boat I don't use. I'm looking at 30ft boats so I find it funny that 35ft isn't "enough boat". It's funny how two people can look at the same boat and have wildly different views on its utility 😂

The sugar scoop slap can be annoying in the aft cabin. One step up from that is the retractable swim platform. The Beneteau center cockpits have an awesome aft cockpit with portlights, walk around queen/king beds, master head with separate shower (44 even has a tub!). The safer feel of the center cockpit is ideal on the open ocean. The flat deck area behind the cockpit is great for doing exercises, fishing, storing bikes, etc

You're making a great point here, and I'm not sure brokers understand just how important a selling feature these things are. Otherwise I think sugar scoop and aft cabin would be right up front in every listing. I think I've got a typical situation for that big wonderful sugar scoop. I can step aboard like the Admiral, but as soon as I get to the cockpit, I'm having to crawl in through the clears like a plumber under a house. Fortunately the first owner got a folding wheel (a $1000 option.) "It's manageable, even without those cool features." Another good point. Every boat I've ever been on has some 'issue.' Nevertheless, you are sailing; you just get used to it. There's always some kind of 'fix' that could make it better.... In the end it's a boat, you're sailing, so what if it's a bit more difficult than staying in your grandparents' condo. In my DIY kayak I had an even better ocean view than the $2m homes up on the Palos Verdes cliff. I figured something out about the big aft cabin in my Hunter 456. (I don't know if I've already shared this latest brain storm (fever?).) There's about 4-5' (140 cm?) above the bed. If I build a box raising the bed 16 or so inches (40cm?), I can use that huge space for storage. Maybe even get the asymmetric bag in there. Definitely stow those two big deck pads, Should clear out all the floating stuff in my main cabin and forward berth. I'll let you know how it goes.

I discussed a failure on a five year old boat with the actually company's owner. He was baffled and agreed that part simply couldn't wear that quickly. When he learned the boat was in regular use, like a charter, he said Oh! That explains it. Charter boats age and wear 5-10x faster than private ones. Beware of a charter boat that has not had an extensive refit.

I can’t help you with the aft cabin in an older boat. But if it’s about the accessibility of your boat there are few possibilities that might help a bit. You can add a wood and stainless bathing plattform to your transom (a lot of Hallberg Rasseys around here have it). There are a lot of different models available. If that is not enough, what about a couple of good steps and a changed pushpit (if that is the right word?). Should be possible to get for under 2000 (€, not a clou what it would cost in Canada). As a boat builder I can tell you that it is possible to laminat a sugar scoop on your classic plastic, it may also stretch your waterline a bit and therefore must be quite tough. With some boats (double backstay and a locker between your transom and cockpit) you could cut the transom and have a staircase big enough to sit on leaving up to your deck. This has to be built quite heavy, too. Your cutting your transom, right? I would estimate both changes around 10 000 each ( €, again). And you may disturb the beautiful lines of your boat. If you love your boat and everything else is right and you don’t have the money for a production boat with a sugar scoop and walk through transom maybe with some creativity you can find a way to make it at least easier to climb up and have some place to put your cans on while climbing…

Had a Hunter 380, big boat for its length with a large aft stateroom, but not an island birth. Hunter Passage 42 or 430 can be had for under 100k from the mid 90's and have a large aft island berth. One thing I will say about sugar scoops on a wide transom is stern slap by waves. I went so far to actually purchase a fabric/foam device to help keep the noise down and do not recall what it was called. Not a big fan of the B&R rig, but feel the build quality is on par with any Ben or Jen, Catalina seems to be a notch or two up.

I looked at the Delphia and did a live video chat tour with the broker about a month ago. The pictures on the listing are not current and the boat needs work. From what I recall, it’s been on the hard for 3 years in Grenada after the owner’s cruising plans changed. I think the price was over $100k, so at $80k still seems like a good deal since these boats don’t come up for sale often in the US. There’s also another Delphia I was considering in SoCal, but ended up going with an IP350 (thanks to Tim) that better suited my needs. Happy to connect any interested parties to either of the two brokers I’ve previously communicated with regarding the Delphia.

Always love it when you think outside the Beneteau, Catalina, Jeanneau box. Bringing up Bavaria and Delphi is a plus. I'm still the older Swan, Baltic, Hallberg Rassey guy. Not buying a car but think closer to a house. Double wides are fine if that's what you can afford, no knock on people that own one. I right now couldn't afford one. But if I have around that 100k to drop I'm going old school top end which probably was maintained by a fanatic.

Complete non-sailor here , (but would like to do the Florida/ Caribbean thing one day) so this question may be dumber than crap. Would it be feasible to mount a small jib crane on the stern to help getting fuel cans, groceries, etc on board without the sugar scoop? Obviously this would not help with swimming but I can't swing the 80 to 100 thousand dollar price tag of the "nice" boats.

Hi Tim, I'm a new viewer and I am hooked on your videos. My first boat was a 1981 Hunter 37 Cutter which I sold years ago. I am getting the sailing bug again. It's a sickness, I know. I do have a question, i am looking to purchase a boat around the 38 to 42 range. Have you ever considered a show on which vessel has the best location to install a generator, not a portable one? I am also in agreement that my boat needs a scoop and aft center line cabin. Last thought, which sails better, Catalina, Hunter, etc. Thanks for listening Dario D

Very well produced and edited! The two 35's are just too small (in my opinion) and I'm not so sure about the 2007 Bavaria (I think they were going nearly bankrupt at that time and so I question the quality). That leaves the Jeanneau 39 as the best of the group (though I personally think that older boats were better built and certainly had better capsize ratios - but alas, no sugar scoops).

Also a separate shower stall and proper nav station / desk area would be key. You just can’t find those on the older boats, say before late 90’s or 2000.

Our boat was set on stands for a week, right next to that Delphia. It looks like it may be a nice boat but it is obvious it's been there a while and every system onboard must be getting tired. I'd honestly look at it but you'll need some money to get her sailing reliably. It is not under cover at all. Standing/running rig is sitting in the salt air with how many years of sailing already on it... Boats, like houses don't do well just sitting for years. And If you've never been to the southern Caribbean get ready for sticker shock... If it cost 2k in the US, +50% it for Grenada. Or pay $4 a pound shipping plus brokerage.

No , not a chance, it's 10% of boat value per year to look after a good boat .Generally boats in that price range need more. If you keep it 5 years expect to pay out around 25000 on upgrades and maintenance. meanwhile it has depreciated. The 25 thou spent will not add one cent to its value . I own a beautiful old boat . Just added a new old reconditioned diesel and some other stuff . Spent 17000 did all the work my self If I got the pros in it would be 35000 , boat is worth around 20000 , it's all about living the dream, If the were cheap and easy, every body would have one.
