Mackie makes great gear at remarkably low prices. But can the new budget-priced Mackie EM-91C Large-Diaphragm Condenser Mic even compare to a classic high-end AKG C-414?
Robert Cassard plays his 1964 Gibson J-50 and sings lead vocals a relaxed cover of James Taylor's "Secret o' Life" to demonstrate the differences.
What do you hear? Is the AKG worth 10 times the price of the Mackie? Please leave your thoughts in the Comments!

Mackie was always big name and trustable company for all musicians in Europe and I would say more popular than most brands sold in North America. There is a small difference in quality and I can hear it but that’s nothing comparing to 900$ price difference. I would say pretty similar quality and again mackie proved the point of trusting them that they can compete anywhere in world of music and sound. I am impressed. BTW I like your voice and approach to music, you are talented that’s obvious. And you have one interesting perspective when it comes to important factors in sound recording. I subscribed

@@AxlFirst It often feels that way, right? As with guitars, there's definitely an audible sonic difference between mics, but it can be difficult - or even meaningless - to say which is "better." Almost any piece of gear can be used brilliantly by trusting your ears and making the right adjustments - EQ, Compression, etc.

Note to viewers: Don't skip the first minutes....the Mackie has been put through a fairly detailed EQ-ing to achieve this. "EQs well" would be an interesting category. I can EQ the Rode NT1A easily to be a flatter mic (by using just a few nodes), but I can't wring the shine out of the AT2020. Just have to appreciate that shine for certain jobs. Without the EQ the EM-91c is fairly low at the high end. But...it EQs well!
@RobertCassard
@RobertCassard 2 года назад
Right on, Jaimes. I appreciate you clarifying that point. I actually created the EQ curve based on the visual curve Mackie supplied. I simply compensated for the mic's high-end roll-off. After doing that, it sounded much more like the AKG...which is flatter by nature right out of the box. I did another comparison of a cheap Shure SM57 (with an external pre-amp) against the AKG and this one REALLY blew my mind...with no EQ compensation! Check it out: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ISLCkq-of7o.html

The Mackie is incredible at this price point. I mean, $1000.00 to $83.00? Come on you gotta be kidding me! That's an amazing accomplishment by Mackie for sure. I do hear the difference but it's not that markedly differentiated from the AKG. I will certainly be taking at look into getting a Mackie for my own home studio needs.

I heard another demonstration of the Mackie online recently so I was interested to hear this, particularly because I used to have a 414 EB. But I would rather have heard these two without any EQ at all, just a straight up comparison.
@RobertCassard
@RobertCassard Год назад
I considered that, Harland. But because the Mackie EQ curve rolls off the highs (I presume as an anti-feedback measure for live use), literally every listener would've just thought it was a "bad mic." But in fact, it's a surprisingly good mic in terms of the detail it captures. And with its low noise, it's no problem to boost the high-end EQ.

I was almost going to buy the Mackie, but after listening to this demo, this would have been a false economy. Thank you for the demo. I think now - much better to save up for a better microphone. I think the swingspot for budget XLR microphones is somewhere nearer to $120 or $150. Most of the microphones below that budget, typically have flaws or lack consistency from either the design, or quality assurance lapses during manufacture. To make a consistently good microphone, from one copy to another, costs a certain minimum amount of money. I doubt if anyone can beat the Rode NT, in consistency and manufacturing quality, and their cheapest large diaphragm microphone is about $150 the NT Signature edition. Below that, there are going to be clearly compromises.

Yes, the Mackie sounds pretty good, but the AKG is still better. You can hear a better/fuller balance on the AKG, where the Mackie sounds a bit mid-rangey. On the guitar (and on the vocal) the high end is just a bit sweeter on the AKG which allows you to hear the character of the pick hitting the strings in a way you can't on the Mackie. But, for 80 bucks....

The bang for the buck factor is huge with the Mackie, but the AKG has more resonance, depth, and detail, it is especially noticeable on guitar since it has a wider frequency range compared to the vocals. The EQ used hyped the Mackie a bit, and the low end was thin, the 2 mics should have gain matched and left flat. I've heard it used in a church on a quartet of singers and they sounded very good. I've bought a pair to try them out, just waiting on delivery.
@RobertCassard
@RobertCassard 3 года назад
I agree Perry. I do think the Mackie’s EQ curve is tailored for live use and to prevent feedback. I realize I wasn’t doing a direct comparison of the two mics left flat. I was trying to see if the Mackie could even compare when tweaked to a similar curve. Glad you have a pair coming. Tell me how they work for you. Guessing they’ll be hard to beat for $160 or so...

Good point. Unfortunately, I don’t have an AT2020 or I’d do it. That said, if you have a good audio interface with enough gain, you really can’t go wrong with a Shure SM-57. It’s a studio standard, even for acoustic guitar and vocals. For vocals, I also love the Sennheiser e835, also about $100. All the vocals for my band Cosmic Spin’s Gilding Lilies EP were recorded through a pair of e835s. I’ve had a couple of world-class engineers stare at me incredulous when I tell them!

Or would you rather spend a bit more money and go for a Rode NT1 (a) with a Focusrite Scarlett Solo 3rd Gen?

@RobertCassard 3 года назад
You might be surprised by my answer, given what a deal the Mackie is for $80... I’d go with the Rode! However, since you’re asking my opinion, I’d avoid the Scarlett. Instead, at a low price point, I’d go with either the new SSL2+ ($279-ish) or a new MOTU interface like the M2 ($169-ish) or one of its bigger siblings. I compared a Scarlett with a few other interfaces awhile back, and was underwhelmed. In fairness, it wasn’t a 3rd gen. I used a MOTU interface for 15 years, and the recordings I made with it still stand up to what I’m recording today with Universal Audio gear.

The mackie is good, but the presence that the AkG has gives both the guitar and vocal that "special" sauce that eq can't substitute for. there are reasons why the Akg is a true standard, the parts quality, build quality, rf interference, and holds its sound as long as you own it--- the Mackie is built in china by probably MXL and the parts quality is nothing like the AKG, yes short term it will suit you, but which one will you still have 10-20 years from now? um, the AKG.
@RobertCassard
@RobertCassard 4 года назад
Couldn’t agree more about the special sauce, Michael. It’s amazing when you can use a mic and require no EQ (or only subtractive EQ) to get a great sound. When you buy a $1000 mic and are able to amortize it over 20 years, it’s only $50 a year!

Looking for a cheap but still decent mic to work on my piano compositions, and I've come back to this one after looking for something of value under $100. What other materials do you need to run the mic? Does it work through USB or do you need a converter/splitter? thanks for this review, I do believe I'll check it out. If I can get it to work through USB, that is. Cheers

Hi Bratya. This EM-91C connects via an XLR cable and requires an interface to your computer and recording software. Mackie makes a different EleMent mic that works via USB (called the EM-USB). It’s more expensive, retailing for $149. amzn.to/3fbbA6R. If you want to create natural stereo recordings of piano, a great option is the Zoom H1n. It’s a very portable all-in-one recorder with dual built-in mics, and it sounds amazing for the $119 price. amzn.to/3fhq31d. (The H1n is what I use to record the room audio for all these videos!) Cheers!

@@RobertCassard Thanks! I don't want to simply purchase the microphone because I need a better model and its affordable. I have been playing for near on 5 years now and have begun writing my first compositions of merit and the last bargain mic I purchased was the Behringer C-1U. It's loaded with static and hiss, and the sound quality isn't very warm. For example, this recording was made with C-1U the day it was delivered; ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qKVUhPXz1OM.html That 'hssss' can be heard over the piano! and in every recording ever made with the damn thing. Now, this is part of a longer session recorded at a friend's using a KG Pro Audio C214: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8YDGURHPyiU.html Same piano. Same hands! The difference between the quality in the two recordings is immense, whereas the comparison between your studio mic and this EM-91C is not so drastic. Is there something inherently inferior to USB microphones as opposed to other interfaces? (My friend is a studio musician/guitarist and he put more on that mic than I paid for my piano! Yay, poverty!) Thanks for the advice. :)

@@Brandon-a-writer Since you're recording a piano and doing free-form compositions or improvisations without needing a click track, the Zoom H1n could be a GREAT option for you. Here's why: 1) It records in STEREO, using an X-Y pair of built-in mics. The sound is crisp and clear with no audible hiss (unless there's noise in your room). 2) It records directly onto a micro SD card in MP3 or WAV format. 3) If you want to add any effects (EQ, reverb, compression), you can import the audio files directly into any audio editing software or DAW and enhance them there. 4) It can go with you anywhere and record any piano without needing to lug ANY extra equipment. It depends. The Mackie is a very solid mic for the price, but I always need to brighten the upper-mid frequencies to get it sounding like a more expensive mic. If you want something that sounds great out of the box (with no added EQ), watch this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ISLCkq-of7o.html. UPDATE -- I sold the Mackie. My conditions changed. I ended up liking the Behringer XM8500 better (see a few comments below). ------ Just a follow-up after 3 months of ownership. I've come to enjoy this mic for what it is. I have pretty much the same review on Amazon (Amazon mixed reviews of a few different Mackie mics together, so their reviews are kind of a mess). Before you buy this mic, look at the spec sheet and know this mic has the highs rolled off compared to other condensers. Because of this, you will find this mic works very well for simple long form spoken word. It is not often a good choice for instruments or singers who want a big/wide sound, IMHO (Podcastage talks about instruments in more detail, as he has experience). If you want something for music, my suggestion near this price point is to spend a bit more for the wider but neutral AT2035 (Which is a step up from the 2020, and doesn't have the 2020's slight excessive high boost) OR Neat King Bee. Or spend a lot more for the Blue Babybottle SL. The Mackie excels at long form spoken word, specifically for those who have somewhat sibilant voices. This mic tames sibilant issues (my problem). It doesn't sound muffled, but it is a smidge muddy in the very low end, and not bright. The bass extension on the AT2020 and AT2035 are better, but the high end "air" those mics create also pick up more room noise. That extra air is not crucial for my line of work (teaching videos), and too much air makes for a less enjoyable longform experience without a perfect studio noise-removed set-up, IMHO. I EQ'd the bass to roll off from around 100hz, pulled it down a bit between strategic places at 250 and 500hz. I also brightened the highs maybe 2db from 5,000hz up. I like how it handles sibilance, though. Without EQ, its character borders on dull and a bit overbearing in the lows, but not overly so. Trim them down a little, and you're good. This is a mic which provides a very pleasant long form sound for someone like me -- a teacher looking to create clean vocals for 30 minute teaching videos, so long as you trim the lows as you normally should with any mic. Note that I have a moderately well-treated recording room, with several thick moving blankets covering the walls and laying around. If you cannot pull off a room like this, avoid the condensers and get a dynamic mic like the Samson Q2U or Shure SM58. After further use, I am finding I like how this mic acts almost super-cardioid in how it keeps out background sound (or like a dynamic mic, might be a better comparison). For voice-over where I am a little close to the mic, I do drop some of the bass, as mentioned above, and add about 2db to the mids. I de-ess a smidge because I've boosted, but not much is needed. I am going for a bigger sound than cheaper mics typically give me. I like how this mic ends up sounding through my student's laptops and earphones (I took a poll of 110 students, and 80% of them listen through earbuds or a laptop with tinny little speakers). I have learned "enough" clarity and a lack of echo are more important for my trade -- too many condensers are shrill and harsh in the ears, but not this one. I like how I don't have to worry as much about room acoustics compared to "better" condenser mics. The trade-off is that I have a very workable mic that improves my teaching videos and Zoom meetings without adding a lot of room noise like condensers tend to do. Another reviewer said it almost sounds like a dynamic at times, and I agree, but the pickup pattern is wider so you can move around a bit, and not be penalized for it. A little compression helps to make this mic approach the sound of a more expensive dynamic like the Shure SM7B -- not the same, for sure, but very good on its own. As mentioned, you have some room to move around without having to put your mouth within an inch of the thing. That's a nice advantage to this mic (so long as I stay within maybe 10 inches I can move side to side a bit more than with a dynamic -- enough to make a big difference while teaching). I am sorry but I lack the experience or need to be further away from it. If you are wanting a mic for online gaming, I still suggest a dynamic mic, and if you want to go cheap but still have XLR sound, go with the Behringer XM8500 (freaking amazing mic for the price) or if you want a USB mic, go with the Samson Q2U. Even cheaper still -- Fifine K668, which is hilariously good and only about $30. In fact, for teachers and 90% of the public, that mic is enough.

Hi Derek, do you think the Mackie EM-91C could be a good budget, multi-use microphone with EQ? I am looking for a mic to use for gaming, vocal recordings and potentially podcasting; I really like the tone of the mic, from both Robert's and Podcastage's reviews it's seems like it punches above it's weight despite the issues with untreated background noise. Considering that the King Bee is unavaliable in the UK and the AT2035 is double the price; this really is the best Condenser mic in my budget. I want to make the use of my XLR in the 2i2, which I'll probably upgrade to a MOTU M series soon, do you think the EM-91C is viable or should I get a dynamic microphone such as the SM58 for my use cases?

@@blazinkid5178 Well, I just sold the Mackie, because conditions of use changed. For my purposes (teaching, RU-vid videos, podcast) I found the Behringer XM8500 is a better overall performer, and even cheaper. The Mackie began to bug me as I compared it more and more to the Behringer, and as coworker said the Behringer was much better. The condensers are so dependent on the location you use them in. I find myself moving around to other locations (even in the same room) more often, and the sound of the Mackie and my AT 2035 varied so much based on where it was, what was behind it, how high it was, etc. The Behringer is a more consistent performer. I also just bought the Behringer SB78a, and still prefer the XM8500, with a bass roll-off in EQ around 90hz-100hz (a must in Zoom, to keep compression artifacts down, with any mic). it really is a better mic for my needs. It really has balls for gamers, too. I had to purchase a $7 shock mount from Aliexpress for the XM8500, though. Otherwise, it picked up desk noise. That solved the issue.

@@Swampfox10mm Well I haven't tested the acoustics in my room to check for reflections so i don't know how my mic placement affects my sound. But the issues you had that got you to sell the Mackie, are those issues with the mic specifically or with Condensers in general? Most dynamic mics perform more consistently than condensers in untreated rooms. I do know is that the XM8500 will require more gain because it cannot make use of phantom-power and, my 2i2's preamp is rather poor without use of phantom power and I may as well get use out of it if possible. Is the EM-91C bad or are condensers in general not for your needs?
@Swampfox10mm
@Swampfox10mm 3 года назад
@@blazinkid5178 I have thick blankets over 2 walls, and a hangar bar filled with clothes that dampens sound over a third. The issue I can't get away from are reflections from a 2-monitor "tree" I installed for stand-up Zoom use. Yes, the Behringer ends up using 85%+ of the gain from my sound card, but it does not present noise issues for me (although I do have cable problems with any dynamic XLR creating hums, if the cable is crap -- including past Shure mics I have owned). The condensers need to be in a larger room than I have (maybe 3 meters by 4 meters space here). All of my condensers performed better in my office, which was 3mx6m, but that room was A PAIN to deaden sound in. I seem to have a resonance/reflection off of the monitors that I just cannot get rid of, given the space that I have and how close I need to be to my webcam. Two monitors stacked on each other creates a pretty large/flat area for reflections directly behind a condenser. To be honest, the resonant noises are not as easily noted through speakers. I hear them in headphones, though - and my students mostly use earbuds and headphones.

There is a definite loss in detail in the upper frequencies. The Mackie is great for longform spoken word, but I wouldn't buy it for singing or music. I ordered one specifically for spoken word, because I am too sibilant.
