@@clickbait4820 yes riding the sram would be like riding the grx with 30 teeth in the front and 33,9 in the back (mathematically of course) 😬. My guess is that the ceramic bottom bracket saved at least 50 watts so they felt like the gearing was easier 😂😂😂

We can use that extra range to put a smaller 42t chainring on and get an easier uphill gear instead of the faster downhill gear. The downhill gear with 42/10 is still the same as Shimano's 46/11. But the uphill gear is much easier: 42/52 = 0.808. I think many "normal" riders would benefit from this easier gear. But of course the needed gear ratios are highly personal and depend heavily on things like training status or terrain. Pro riders and strong enthusiasts/semi pros may decide to stay with the faster gears on Red - or they decide from race to race what to use. 😂 Somebody who is riding on flat roads or smooth gravel has different gearing needs to somebody riding in the mountains, sometimes on single tracks or is bike packing. :-) One more point. I think this GRX groupset with 2x10 is still expensive - considering that many mountainbikes with a better prices have 12speed groupsets (with hydraulic brakes). And below GRX 10speed starts the entry level gravel market where bikes are much cheaper but the difference in gear ratios is not that big with 2x9. And we can always build a 3x9 setup. :-) Of course some compromises in other areas are appearing: As far as I know there are no hydraulic disc brakes for drop bars below 10speed (only mechanical discs or hybrid discs). E.g. there are 1x10 options from Microshift (Taiwan) with the same gear range as Shimano GRX 1x11.

If 3500 is the value that manufacturers think this is worth, then they lost the plot, clearly.

If you are an amateur/recreational cyclist you are mad to go more than mid range components.. unless you are pro you just don’t need anything more.. 🤷🏼‍♂️

This. The 11-34 is a bit narrow for a 2x gravel bike (depending on the terrain of course), but the derailleur is capable of much more. Without modification I would go up to 11-38. 40 is certainly possible, but didn't feel great when I tried. I opted to use a RoadLink DM (30 bucks) and run 2 wheelsets: one with 11-40, one with 11-42. Totally fine.

Does 11-40 works witch default grx 400 derailleur ?

@@Milian89 RD RX400, whose tooth capacity is rated at 41T. My setup is 45T (48/32T Praxis rings with 11-40T cassette), so proceed at your own risk. I'm able to crosschain in a pinch but don't make a habit of it. The 32/40 low end is the feature.

I use an 11-42 cassette without a road link. Just needed 4 extra links for the chain. But it shifts well. Massive range.

Even if you'd go 11 speed. You can get the deore M5100 11-42t casette for like 50-60 quid. GRX600 is also shockingly good value. And being 105 at it's core it just shifts better. It has the short throw of the last mechanical shimano top end groupsets.

Actually, you can get a 40 tooth chainring for Red.

I run 42/10-52 on my gravel bike, it is much better distribution in my opinion. You have a 1:1 ratio gear and a gear that saves you when you have a lot of bikepacking gear and going up offroad climbs. Top end is more than enough for me with 42/10 I believe it spins out at 65km/h.

I am mainly road bike but use 53/11 from lights and even up some hills, next bike be SRAM red axs with dropper and alloy frame be similar to their lightest bike on here, I am going 50t front as never found hills need compact gearing yet, might look to go off road a bit with tubular, at moment front 22mm and rear 25mm

30/34 is the same as 46/52. You will get exactly the same speed in those teeth. So I do not care about tooth difference between those, but the result is the same. Now on the other end it might be different, but for climbing on the lowest speed is exactly the same. And the only difference was the weight or just mindset.

@@Macuhdohnadadoh the 1x argument of it being just as capable as 2x for gear range is just awful. any decent 2x setup will have more range than even a 520% mtb cassette

@@Carftymk Well this use case proves it's not always the case. The GRX400 does have smaller more consistent pacing though. With the GRX 812 rear mech you can use an 11-42t. With an 46-30 front you'd have plenty of small gears.

Was going to same the same. Newer Tiagra on one of my road bikes. 105 and Ultegra on others and really it's a toss up if you throw out the weight differences.

Another little hack is to replace (when they're worn out obviously) your stock cables/housing for the nicer coated cables and compressionless housing. Makes an already good groupset that bit closer to feeling like the top-shelf stuff.

You can race with GRX400 which is what this video shows. It saves very little power and weight when going up. Spending some of the leftover cash on Wheels Training diet Will go a LOT further.

Yep. Writing off a rear derailleur that costs several hundred when you get a stick caught in there or crash is ridiculous.

@@dan44zzt231 Which is why you won't find people riding Etap or DI2 in the mountainbike world. 9 out of 10 people ride Deore SLX/XT mechanical or Sram equiv.

Yeah Shimano is always conservative with their derailleurs. I'm running RX600 shifters with an 812RD and a Suntour 11-50 cassette. Works fine. I added a Goatlink11 to make the shifting smoother and make me less paranoid with the derailleur strain. Mullet gears I want (my bike doesn't take a front derailleur) and a fraction of the cost of eTap or Di2

Do you know anyone with 120mm? I always used that so far but thinking to make trek Emonda ALR about 7.8kg with SRAM red axs and dropper with tubular 22mm front and 25mm rear but thinking to use off-road a bit

Ekar is 1200 pounds ish. And god does it look sexy. Replacement parts are a lot more expensive then Shimano though.

Just replace it. Your chainstay on your frame is worth more then 50 quid.

My Diverge came with a 11 36 cassette and I don't understand why this isn't a thing with other bike brands.

I have an 11-36 cassette waiting to be put on my GT grade carbon expert. Great minds think alike!

500 pounds ish no labour. on the Sram. 50-60 ish on the shimano.
