If I buy the £7k bass, will I be able to stop people from talking during my bass solo though?
@PaulBadman
@PaulBadman 5 лет назад
you're doing it wrong ,Next time you start a bass solo first start with playing a bass line from a 90's to early 00 hip hop song or video game then go in to the solo and every time people loose interest start playing the pipe theme from Mario. I saw The Roots do this not just with Bass solos by guitar and drum solos as well and IMO The Roots are the best live band i've ever seen

Maybe I'm biased (having just bought an Ibanez Mikro bass) but I really like the looks of the GSR180 and I could live with the tone - some EMGs would probably fit if you really wanted to get more sounds. And yes, I bought the Mikro at Andertons.

IMO Anything up to (edited price to reflect inflation since I last bought a bass) £1500 is worth the upgrade. Anything higher than that and you're into aesthetic choices and specific tech quirks. I replaced my stolen bass with a rockbass half the price and while it does the job I absolutely miss the higher quality preamp, bronze frets and attention to detail in the manufacturing of the nut and bridge.
@Slavfoxman
@Slavfoxman 5 лет назад
Eh, I bought a ~2k€ Sandberg California because it felt miles ahead of Fenders and such for me, and I've still noticed a huge quality improvement over it when I tried out a ~3k€ custom shop one; there was an even larger quality gap between the ~3k€ custom and a Fodera I had the chance to play. As much as I'd like to agree with you (because, despite loving them, I can't imagine ever being able to afford a Fodera without feeling guilty about buying one), there's still crazy improvements IN MY OPINION on the top end of the price curve. Although, as we all know, this is all relative - I can imagine myself justifying a £4k bass purchase for the feel and sound, if I was able to afford one, but I can understand just as well why someone else might think there isn't a reason other than luxury and a Custom Shop nameplate.
@SuffyANX
@SuffyANX 5 лет назад
@@XuQifei Probably true for metal? Does having quality instruments not matter in metal, or something? Regardless, I feel like $1,000 is where the quality increase per dollar really starts dropping off. Sure, a $2000-3000 instrument will still be nicer, but at around $1000, maybe give or take $300 depending on what you're looking for, you generally should be able to get high quality hardware and electronics with very good build quality from most brands. At the very least I know that the absolute highest-end bass I could see myself ever buying is a Dingwall NG3, and even those are only around the $2k mark.

Yeah. I feel the same. I started out in my warwick journey with a rockbass corvette 6 string, and I didn't like it for the woods and the neck dive. I took up on an offer that was a custom shop '06 corvette $$, and I love that thing so much. They both cost the same (~$850) but this corvette $$ is so much nicer, has the switches, better pre-amp, original brass just-a-nut, bronze frets, and the swamp ash body & wenge/ovangkol neck. Now, I don't even like playing my 6 string corvette, as it feels much cheaper, and when I play it, i only wish it was as nice as the $$. Plus, I love all the tone. I was genuinely considering selling all my basses to get a 5 string BO thumb, as I love the thumbs tone, and I don't like the thickness of the warwick 6 string necks, so the 5 string is the nice balance inbetween. I also have an Ibanez GSR200, and it was the bass I started out with, and I don't like playing it as much, but it was a nice bass.

Suggestion: blindfold bass challenge where Nate (or whoever) is tasked with identifying classic basses from tone and neck feel alone. Sample pool: Rickenbacker 4003, Fender P-Bass, Fender J-Bass, Warwick Thumb, Gibson Thunderbird, and a wildcard (maybe something like a Hofner violin bass)

It may be because I am mainly a guitar player, but as long as it plays well, which I trust any Ibanez would, tone isn’t as noticeable with a bass, so you could go with the £150 bass. With a guitar, however, I really noticed the difference in intonation, playability, versatility, ability to sound good and not make weird noises with high gain, and tone when spending £700-800 on a player series Strat and Gretsch Electromatic.

Great video once again. I know a lot of guitar players, all who make a decent living from music, that own vastly expensive guitars (that they bang on about), but have a cheap bass knocking about just for "recording with". No one ever comments on how cheap the bass sounds on their albums. If you're a good player, don't waste money on headstock names or special woods. No one but you will care.

I really believe the cutoff to lasting quality is approximately 500 quid with the collector paying 2000 pounds or more to keep in a case. Depends what you want to do with it. Truly, playing 5 days a week, 700-800 pounds will get you a reliable work horse that will withstand the rigors of travel and yet you won't be heartbroken if someone loses his fish and chips over it

The best sounding guitar I own, or have ever heard (with the exception of famous 59 bursts) was a discounted to £380 B grade ex-demo 2013 Les Paul 50's Tribute. Routed out for humbuckers, Gibson Historic rings, Grover 502c tuners, new vinyl nut, re-wired 50's style with NOS PIO 400v 0.015uf caps, CTS TVT 30% taper pots and a set of Sheptone Blue Sky PAF's. Total: £760. Another £500 got me a beat up H/W AC30 with alnico blues AND NOS valves! Shoot I even paid £65 to import the Sheptone pickups .. Absolutely nails the 57 gold top tone. Gigged that rig all over the UK to universal compliments on the tone. If it got nicked or the van set on fire I'd go out and buy another Vox and probably a Mexican Tele tomorrow and carry on.. Any actual musician paying more than 7-800 pounds for their #1 is either rich or vain.

I still think 1250-ish freedom bucks...1000-1500...right around there...that's the sweet spot for guitars and basses. You can definitely spend more OR less, but that's really where you're going to start getting a nice variety of really nice instruments that will fit a wide variety of players, styles, play levels, etc.

There is a point of diminishing returns with going up the scale. The Warwick has surely gone way past it but if you think of features you want as a professional bassist such as active electronics, a wide tonal range, a neck through body and string through bridge - these are features that can make a real difference if you are a touring musician, recording musician or discerning amateur. Things like the artwork and other features pertaining to the looks of the bass are entirely up to individual tastes. Yes, a more affordable instrument will do the job just fine, but maybe not quite as nicely. There is something to be said for a higher cost item with high quality parts but past a point it just gets silly.

I have this exact Ibanez. I have two MIM Fenders. The difference is huge. The Ibanez original pickups are bad. Very muddy. The electronics are quite poor as well. No shielding. When I was playing on stage and I was using only one pickup there would be a really loud buzzing. The knobs were not working correctly. The MIM - a really good sound, some minor problems either with the nut or the knobs, but much better value. I would say that I would pick up the cheapest USA made Fender and I don't see any value buying a more expensive one. For 6000+ you can get the following combos - Jazz bass and a Precision, active and passive, freted or fretless.

There are many low cost instruments available today that offer astounding value for money. However up to perhaps the £1000 mark, guitars and basses can almost always be improved by things like sorting out the odd high fret, oiling and polishing the frets and fretboard and a good set up. I'd like to think this isn't the case for the really expensive end of the market. At some point once you get on to the fancy marquetry, inlays, precious stones, gold and silver and hand painted graphics and so on any instrument becomes an artwork, a statement of the skill and taste of the maker. Good for an investment and display in a glass case, but you wouldn't play them.

I learned to play on a bass that must've been worth less than a hundred euros. I remember my left index finger being full of scratches because the fretboard finish was terrible and many notes on the fretboard were out of tune because the neck was twisted and the truss rod adjustment didn't really work. Nowadays I play a Warwick which isn't even worth a grand and I'm more than happy with it. I really couldn't care less how much the bass costs as long as I feel comfortable playing it and I feel some kind of a connection to the instrument. I still have that "shitty old bass" I started with and I wouldn't trade it for anything just because of the history I have with it. Of course there's a difference between a 50$ and a 5000$ bass but that's really not the point. If you like an instrument, you go with it and how it makes you feel and play can't really be measured by money.

Not sure, but the fact that The.Captain introduced himself as "Stand-in Lee" suggests that bass-player-Lee will be back at some point.

Not sure about that Warwick. You’re gonna have to send it to me to give it a try.

That warwick sounded absolutely horrible... It didn't have the clarity and balance in tones that the ibanez did. That warwick was only expensive because if the art involved in making it. And on the argument about a gigging bassist, the bassist would obviously choose sound and playability over asthetics. Asthetics are the last thing considered in getting a gigging instrument. It must stay in tune, must be able to set in the overall mix well and must be easy to physically play so your creativity isn't stiffled by discomfort. I'm seriously shocked by how cheap the warwick sounded. That warwick sounded like the £150 bass even when Nathan was playing it which proves even a talented bassist can't make that warwick sound better.

Probably the Bartolinis tbh, not everyone is into them. Quite "polite" sounding. Warwicks don't usually come with them, bit of a strange choice.

The tone settings he had on the amp just made both basses sound buzzy with no tone like they were being played under a duvet. Give me Phil Lynotts bass sound any day.

At least the Inanez doesn't have a wonky headstock. $7000 and Warwick can't get strings to go straight into the tuning pegs? WTF

7 grand??? And it's used. Seems a bit pricey for a second hand guitar. Does your finger sweat maintain the value? My experience is that tone woods don't make as much of a difference with basses because the low resonant frequencies don't interact as well with the tone woods as the higher frequencies of a 6 string. I think that is why basses seem to be much better value per £. So it comes down to the electronics, which are getting cheaper and cheaper for better quality all the time. Sire are a case in point.

You should do like James Hetfield, who gets a custom guitar made (albeit nothing fancy and just a flat camo finish) just to beat it up every show. Ramming it down on the headstock and all. He really takes relic-ing seriously... - Whereas say Kirk Hammett back in the day took an Ibanez look-a-like and trashed that one. But I bet it was still OK. - I think Murray and Gers in Maiden used proper Fender Strats to throw around though. But yea, they all have the budget. But the point being; Considering what théy do with them, I think you don't have to be too careful unless it's just a piece of art like that Warwick. But then again, considering how chunky it looks, it could probably take a good beating. Just too bad it's a neck-through, you can't fix that (as easily).
